Hello, I want to get my partner some Giant African Land Snails for his birthday/Christmas present but I'm not to sure what kind of set up they need. He's kept them before and they are his favourite animal. I don't want to ask him because he'll figure it out. What would you recommend?
Oh man, lucky you/your partner! I really love those guys and I read up a lot about them years ago after learning of their existence.
A lot of people keep them in bins to retain humidity but they can be kept in glass terrariums as well. Coco coir or plain topsoil are a good substrate, preferably a deep bed of 3” or so. Any decor should be snail safe, so no sharp edged from things like broken pots or rocks. Cork bark is a good naturalistic decor. Food should be put in a very shallow dish and they need a humidity of 60-80% (this depends on the species, though) and most are fine at room temperature.
A tank (size depends on the snails, but a 10-20gal should work.
Coco coir or topsoil (no fertalizers)
A shallow food dish (terra cotta works well. The dish they put under the actual pot to catch water is shallow and heavy, so it’s not easy to tip over)
An under tank heater and a rheostat (dimmer) but this depends on the species you keep.
A digital probe thermometer
A digital probe hygrometer
A florescent light (optional)
Good foods include the followings (always remember to rinse veggies and fruits!)
