her legacy
I guess ymir also could have just turned all her children into trees. But she was in fuckit mode, which was somewhat understandable. So onwards!
I can't sleep, so I'm gonna ramble about Ymir and Annie plus AruAni (Armin x Annie).
People turn Annie into a soft, traditional woman in this ship when she isn't one. She does have a gentle side in the show, but other than that, she hasn't expressed any interest whatsoever in a domestic life. It's fine to make fan children and imagine marriages with ships, but it's gotten to a point where it's so nuclear that it doesn't feel like Annie anymore. I think a lot of the fandom goes by the shows logic of "healing post-war = marriage and kids."
There's also general misogyny towards Annie since her character wasn't exactly developed in s4. But even if it was, I highly doubt the fandom would respect her. Just look at how the other well developed women are treated. Anyways, much like both Reiner and Bertholdt, her allies, Annie is a child soldier who killed a bunch of innocent Scouts in order to achieve her goal of returning home to her father. Naturally, she's an "evil bitch" because she killed checks notes Scout A23. And Petra, a side character who people mostly pretend to care about in order to hate Annie. A lot of people label her as heartless because she stated she'd do it all again if it meant she could see her father again. One, it's common for the show to have morally gray characters, and two, she's shown multiple times to have struggled with killing people. Like. She cries about it in a good portion of her screen time.
I believe that a good amount of this fandom misogyny could be reduced if AruAni just wasn't canon and the writing of the show wasn't misogynistic in that regard. This would eliminate the whole AruAni fandom treatment in general and likely give her more time to cope and respond to the world around her in s4 rather than blushing over a man she barely had any screen time with. Blehhhh
Then Ymir. The lesbophobia that blasts me when I see content of her.... Ymir is a brass, cocky, but honest and selfless character. She's a character who lives for herself after being given a second chance at life and works in tandem with Historia's character to build up the general theme of "live your life without regrets." It's a very well written and beautiful relationship that is unfortunately doomed. So what does the fandom do with this complex character who happens to be sapphic. You'll never guess.
She's the mean lesbian whose only personality trait is being a lesbian!! I imagine it's because of how explicit she is with her love for Historia. She constantly references how much she wants to marry her, and even writes it in her final letter to her. This was the sign for the fandom to completely ignore any other depth that she had and make her the Lesbian™️. There's also lesbophobia on Historia's side where people will say their romance is "one-sided" because Hisu isn't as explicit with her love, even if it is most definitely there. A lot of people in general can't seem to comprehend the fact that feminine women can be lesbians or sapphic.
I've seen this a bit less than the other things, but Ymir is also made out to be a hype man for a popular gay ship within the community. I like the friendship between her and the two men being shipped, but can yall please respect Ymir as her own character. She was life altering to teen me
annie and ymir propaganda!
My favourite kind of character backstory is ‘was the god of a cult’ (E.G Ymir from AOT or Douma from Demon Slayer)
"Missed me, bitch?"
