The actress will not return to Fox’s ‘Scream Queens’ should the anthology be renewed for a third season.

Lea Michele has booked her next act. The Glee and Scream Queens favorite has joined the cast of ABC’s untitled city mayor comedy pilot, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. From ABC Studios and Hamilton’s Daveed Diggs, the project explores what happens when an outspoken, idealistic rapper named Courtney (Search Party’s Brandon Micheal Hall) runs for office as a publicity stunt. When he actually gets elected, he surprises everyone (including himself) when he has a natural knack for the job and slowly transforms City Hall. Details on the role Michele will play were not immediately available as the part is being adjusted to specifically accommodate the actress. The character originally was planned to be Courtney’s chief of staff. It’s unclear if that will remain as the part continues to shift with Michele’s commitment to the project. The ABC comedy marks her first pilot since Fox’s Glee and first series-regular role outside of the Ryan Murphy universe.

I poured myself the biggest glass of red wine, I put Fleetwood Mac on my vinyl, I lit candles, and I legit started praying and looking for a sign. I have this incredible book that Stevie Nicks gave me in 2013 when my boyfriend [Glee co-star Cory Monteith] died. She gave me this art book of hers that she put notes in over the years and song lyrics, and then she rewrote personal notes for me that say things like, “Keep singing, and have faith.” I was looking through this book and praying that there was an answer in it, somewhere. And there was something in there that said, “The only thing that matters is you, and who you are.” That’s what I’ve been trying to do with this whole record – just connect to me and where I’m from. [The message led Michele to frantically call her best friend, fellow Broadway star Jonathan Groff.] I was like, “What’s something from our time in New York — a word, or a phrase, or something that is from theater, or from us?” And he said, “What about ‘Places?’” When you’re on Broadway, you get your 30-minute call, then your 15-minute call. You hear “Places everyone!” And that means it’s showtime.

I can’t stop thinking about the fact that I got to watch the entire Monchele love story unfold. I saw Cory and Lea meet and falling in love, everyone encouraging them to be together because we clearly saw the spark and that there was something special between them. I saw them sneaking around and freaked out over the tweets of sightings and lea talking about the tall, handsome, Canadian with the tribal arm band. I saved all the photos of them holding hands shopping, at airports, at the amazing Canuks match, and cried when Cory said “of course” when Ellen asked if they were a couple. I paused and rewatched all the interviews of Cory lovingly rubbing her leg and Lea looking up at him with her eyes GLOWING. I took very fond note of everytime they uttered the words ‘boyfriend’ or ‘girlfriend’. And I mourned with Lea when we lost him. I genuinely got to watch two people I adore fall in love and experience a love story. I watched a couple form based upon true love, and I watched a woman pick herself up and carry him in her heart everywhere she goes. I am so thankful that Cory Monteith and Lea Michele loved each other and allowed me to be a part of that.
