Nymphs in the Forest - Gyula Batthyany
Itâs #BatWeek! Although most of our holdings focus on medicine, there are a few zoological works lurking on our shelves. We combed through them to find images of our flying friends, and are happy to report that we found some rather nice examples in Jon Jonstonâs Theatrum universael omnium animalium. This work, which contains beautiful zoological illustrations created by the engraver MatthĂ€us Merian the Elder, was published between 1650 and 1653 as the Historiae naturalis. It was later edited by the Dutch physician and botanist Heinrich Ruysch, and published as the Theatrum universale in 1718. This is the edition we hold here at the medical library.
One thing youâll notice is that the bats appear with various species of birds. This isnât surprising, given the time at which this work was published. As the only mammals capable of sustained flight, bats presented ancient and early modern zoologists with something of a puzzle. Today, of course, we know them to be mammals. Hundreds of years ago, their status as flying animals meant they were classified as avians. Â
Hats off to bats, truly some of the most fascinating creatures that grace our skies!
Some personnal views on Paganism: building my path
Answering questions to a book called Paganism, written by Higgibotham, wich I canât recommand enough for anyone who identifies as a pagan and needs clarification and further reflexion and insights in the topic. Truely enlighting. This is the first part of a little serie of answering paganism related prompts.
Wich season of the year is your favorite? What do you remember from your childhood about this season that has special meaning for you? How do you celebrate this season now?
Itâs Fall, but also Spring. Iâm gonna speak about Fall as we are drawn in it at the moment. At a psychic level, Fall is a time for introversion, return to the intimacy between close ones. Fall is human life keeping on activating: working, studying, moving. Itâs the last spectacular breath of nature in all its dramatic splendor. Itâs that mysterious ambience around Samhain, where you can feel something, something more in the air, something loud, presence and a deep, profound calm as the days fade earlier each time. Autumn is death time, change time, an ending cycle and the opening of a period of a well deserved rest.
When I was a child, Fall wasnât an easy moment. But still I liked it, sensorially, it was glorious: colors, smells, humidity, rotten wood, dying insects, stunning colors all around, loud cracing leafs on the street. I also enjoyed that the routines from the new scholar year were now set into place until June. Going to my dear kind neighbour after school and having a snack and cool manual activity while grey and rainy outside, TV shows on the evenings ; maths and dance lessons, the precious moments spent playing alone into my room. Family dinners, before the divorce, then dinners with my mum and sibling. Mom cooking always the same things to us, just because she sucked at cooking and also because of the induced confort of repetitive routine. People with Aspergerâs have often food routines, wich can be very eliminative. Soups, croque-monsieur and gnocchis. The strong feeling of being protected while at home contrasting to the disturbing one of being weak at shool. But invicible besides of nature falling asleep and dying slowly. Remembrance that I too, gonna die someday, even if Iâve been ables to totally accept and process that only at 25 (before that I would be concerned and sad only about my loved ones, idea of my own death would remain an abstract mystery).
Now I honour that season, and I live space for that strong feeling of mystery to express and grow. I wanna understand and keep in touch with the unknown and the unseen, and I think itâs the best time of the year to question and cultivate that. I always loved darkness. Now I discovered about Shadow Work, I have a tool to explore hidden aspects of my psyche (shadow working with tarot works brilliantly!). Itâs the moment you decide (or not) to try and work with forces, set intentions and work on manifest them. I definitely give more place to ritual and meditation at fall. And this year is all about studying: spirituality, mindfulness, tarot. I need to learn and write. Iâm gonna open an etsy shop at Spring 2018 where I will sell my photos (shown on my instagram @flowersbecomesscreens) and will propose Tarot readings, in French only at first and then in English as soon as I feel comfortable enough to do so. Iâve been into a deep and pretty long process of healing and now and I feel I am ready to transmit tips and advices in order to help people to do so with the help of tarot. Iâm also gonna keep on with my youtube channel. If you arrived at this point of my post then I thank you :) and you must know Iâm gonna write more personnal âbloggingâ stuff on this platform. Personnal thoughts, spirituality, self development and tarot related posts I guess.
So yeah Iâm baack home :D
