Holy shit I'm just now reading The Fall of the White Lotus x Boo_82 and I'm so excited bc it's a zutara piece with (TINY SPOILER) taang mixed in like Aang is starting to realize how different Toph and Katara are while Katara is away and I've never read taang fics before but it's having me wayyy more giddy than I expected.

More atla art! I wanted to make some of these into painting studies too, but I don't have enough time or energy today and I go back to work tomorrow so I'll probably fall silent again until next week haha.
Also, think of the hardest books in college and pretend that's what Sokka and Katara are studying!

Day 6- Nature
The Swamp has always been one of my favorite episodes and was actually the first episode I ever watched of Avatar. So this piece is my love letter to it
Toph: How did you find me?
Aang: Well, a crazy king told me I had to find an earthbender that listens to the earth. Then a random tornado threw us all off my sky bison and into a magic swamp...
Aang: Then I had a vision of you when I was lost in the swamp. I still don't know why that happened, but you've been on my mind ever since.
Toph: *sky bison, tornado, visions of me, on his mind?*
Toph: ...
Katara: Sorry, Aang can be a bit too forward sometimes.
Toph: Is he single?

So I just found a comic based on a fanfiction for Avatar called Distorted Reality. Aang basically experiences a redo of the entire ATLA series in a different universe, with Zuko and Azula finding him first instead of Katara and Sokka :-o
Here you can find the comic by Axxonu on Deviant Art, and here you can find the fanfiction by Ogro it was based on ((:
Here are some of Aang and Toph's moments from the beautifully created comic I barely discovered. š

Many anti Zutara arguments cite Zuko and Kataraās obvious discomfort when the play depicts them behaving romantically together as a sign that they could never be in a romantic relationship, which is funny because two young people becoming extremely uncomfortable at the suggestion of them as a couple is itself a romantic trope, and itās one that pops up several times with Zuko and Katara.
Itās kind of amazing when you look back and realize that the show was doing this from the first book.
Zuko: I need you to find someone. [Cut to Kataraās necklace.]
June: [Sarcastically.] What happened, your girlfriend run off on you?
Zuko: Itās not the girl Iām after, itās the bald monk sheās traveling with.
June: [Unamused.] Whatever you say.
At this point when I watched the series, I was definitely not thinking of the idea of Zuko and Katara as a couple, so I was surprised that the show was making this kind of joke about them. Itās easy to write it off as just a one-off joke, but then the show keeps doing it.
June: [To Zuko.] So this is your girlfriend.Ā No wonder she left, sheās way too pretty for you.
Like, this episode is full of innuendo about Zuko and Katara which was kinda ????? to little old me, who knew nothing about the fandom or what was going to happen later between these two characters.
Katara: [Takes the necklace.] Aang, howād you get that?
Aang: Zuko asked me to be sure I got it to you.
Katara: Aw, thatās so sweet of Zuko. Could you give him a kiss for me when you see him?
Katara is clearly being sarcastic, and her behavior here is in contrast to her embarrassment while watching the play, because at this point in the narrative, she and Zuko do not have a relationship, theyāre not friends, they donāt know each other personally, theyāre just enemies. Similarly Zuko is unfazed by Juneās teasing, partly because he is singularly focused on his mission to capture Aang and only sees Katara as a means to accomplish this, but also because he doesnāt have any sort of relationship to Katara other than as an enemy so he doesnāt care what somebody thinks about her in relation to him. Here, theĀ āshe is not my girlfriendā moments have no effect on them because they donāt care about their relationship to one another.
Contrast this with ZukoāsĀ āshe is not my girlfriendā moment with Jin, who he isĀ on a date with, where the suggestion makes him incredibly embarrassed because he does have romantic feelings for her, which he is incredibly nervous about expressing.
Then, in the third to last episode in book 3, Zuko and Katara get a literalĀ āshe is not my girlfriendā moment.
This time theyāre both embarrassed at Juneās teasing because now they doĀ have a relationship. Now, before anyone accuses me of tinhattery, Iām not saying that at this point in the narrative Zuko and Katara have a romantic relationship or that they totally love each other. And of course, two teenagers like Zuko and Katara would definitely be embarrassed in the same situation even if they were just friends. What I am saying is that the fact of them being embarrassed doesnāt rule out a romantic relationship between them, and is, in fact, part of an established romance trope in fiction, especially for young characters. Itās also something that happens a lot in animation, specifically, so the use of this trope is kinda baffling if the fans were never intended to see Zutara as a possibility.
Did anyone see Sukiās face during that scene in the play? I havenāt seen that smirk since she saw Sokka at the refugee docks!
"In the swamp, we see visions of people we've lost, people we loved, folks we think are gone..."
"But the swamp tells us they're not. We're still connected to them..."
"Time is an illusion, and so is death."
I always wondered what exactly led Team Avatar to the Foggy Swamp.
Team Avatar at the time, were searching for Aang's Earthbending teacher. They were visiting villages and towns throughout the Earth Kingdom in an effort to find the right teacher, so a swamp wouldn't be on their list.
That is, until they find themselves flying past it.
The scene starts with the team flying in over the swamp, when suddenly something weird starts happening to Aang. And we all know weird things happen to him all the time, but this part specifically was different.
He became lost in its view, staring with an empty gaze. Aang could probably feel someone or something staring back at him, leading him to begin lowering Appa towards the swamp.
Then, Aang falls into this trance-like state for the first time in the show, something unusual for him.
Even compared to the rest of his spiritual experiences, he's always had some kind of control over his physical being. This time however, he's clearly lost himself.
He was so gone that it took Sokka yelling at him to realize what exactly was happening.
Aang then goes on to explain that the swamp was calling to him, that it wanted them to land there.
"Bumi said to learn earthbending I would have to wait and listen, and now I'm actually hearing the earth."
After the team voices their displeasure over the idea of landing, Aang agrees to fly past the Foggy Swamp and leave it behind...
Until a TORNADO APPEARS???
This part gets me the most. At the end of the episode, Huu explains the spiritual connection the swamp has, and how it called to him as well.
And while he was responsible for initially attacking them with vinebending, he has no clue as to what manifested this tornado or where it came from.
Where did this come from? Who or what manifested this... And why?
All we know is it forced everyone to land in the swamp, and started the chain of events that eventually led Aang into finding and meeting his Earthbending teacher, Toph... the girl from his visions.
So, where am I going this, you ask? Well, let me spell it out for you...
The Earth/Universe and all of its Cosmic Energy ships Taang.
