i had a dream last night that we started a fire in my room, woke up with smoke inside my lungs, taste of you still on my tongue, i never learn, no, i can't run, but why would i try? i'm a shadow in the sun with no place to hide.

madison's head turned at the sound of her name , brows lifting just slightly as his voice carried across the trauma ward . a quiet huff followed . not really annoyance or amusement , somewhere in between the two . gaze dropped to the coffee in his hand before reaching for it without much hesitation , nodding an unspoken thank you . " you're up way too early for someone this happy , petrovic . " the cup settled between her hands , warmth seeping into her fingers as she took a small sip , eyes narrowing , a small grin forming on her face despite the exhaustion she was feeling . " define great ? because i think you'll be eating those words later . " soft laugh escapes her as she glances past him , taking in the rest of the ward, before settling back on him . " hey , we still on for lunch later ? "

madison grew up the youngest of three, her older brothers always louder and braver than she was, but never one without the other two. her father was a fire chief, a proud man who always came home smelling like smoke and long shifts. her mother taught elementary school and was patient in a way that kept the whole family together. it wasn't a bad childhood, but one that kept her believing nothing terrible could ever truly happen to her.
her early twenties felt like a different life entirely. she was engaged to her high school sweetheart, someone she thought she'd spend forever with, and had already started down the nursing path. they'd just moved into their first home and in her mind everything was working out perfectly, exactly as she had planned.
she was getting home late one night after class, only to find her home up in flames. she knew who was still inside before anyone had to say it, and knowing didn't make a difference. she couldn't get to them, couldn't change anything. she fought like hell to get into that house, and when all else failed, she watched as her father went back in anyway, unable to give up on her, on them. he didn't come back out. she spent hours sat on the curb, left with nothing but questions that didn't come with answers.
it took a long time for her to pick up the pieces and keep going, but it was the paramedics that took care of her outside the house that night that stuck with her, inspired her & as much as she wanted to sit there forever and hope that things would change, afraid she'd fall too deep into her grief if she stayed, madison picked up and moved into the city where she started emt training and eventually became a licensed paramedic.
