I start of by saying that I believe in metagate to its full extent. I am not impressed by all of it though. I frankly despise it. I cringe.
It's "performance art" with a poor attempt at deeper meta commentary. This message, how it's wrong for creatives to pander to the audience and how media literacy is in decline, gets completely lost when it's spread by the largest creators of media in the world, who earn containers full of money from relying on people's stupidity and low standards.
How can I take any message of theirs about the state of art seriously, when the companies they're working for are invasively and pragmatically collecting and analyzing our data to understand "how to create loyal fandoms" merely for their own financial benefit?
Moreover, the hints are subtle enough that their work is still happily consumed by the majority, without them ever feeling challenged. These creators feel sanctimonious and self-important about their little scheme, but they're playing it safe. It's cowardice! Real, provocative art doesn't hide its intentions.
Pretentious and cynical, that's what they are. The Duffer Brothers, Sam Levinson, Saturday Night Live, Taylor Swift, everyone else involved.
There is nothing more annoying than a bunch of rich elites coming together to laugh at and talk down at us. This "movement" is a cruel inside joke at the expense of us neurodivergent nerds, of passionate fandoms.
That's my opinion, that I have been stewing on since Jan 1st, when I realized something was off with the finale of Stranger Things.
I don't care about other media that falls under metagate, but I soured on Stranger Things significantly, to the point I'm probably going to have a hard time watching any new related content in the future.
I don't care if byler is confirmed in July, November or next year in some movie or interactive component. There is so much beautiful queer media out there, that openly and honestly explores queer existence and love, showing both the rough edges and the colorful, gentle parts.
Queer lives aren't a gotcha to teach bigots a lesson. Y'all can get absolutely fucked. Happy Pride.
