The symbolism here is so fantastic. It's like a television screen that's been shot, complete with CRT lines, and it leads to an error in the broadcast that reveals the truth beneath the makeup, as well as wounding the actor underneath. The different letters cut from a magazine asking his real name adds to the fragmented nature of this image and directly asks for this smiling clown actor's real story. The fact that Joseph is still smiling even while bleeding and his eye looks displaced and dead adds to this extra note of tragedy. He just wanted to do right by the children.
