Great Ride in the Oregon Outback with my ole buddy "Outback Jim"...
Getting ready to ride!
Adventure, mountains, streams, sun, dust, sand!
Bike is prepped - gear is loaded. A look at what lies ahead...
Bike n Sail!
GET OUT OF THE GYM! It's outside for a great ride/workout. I rode up Banks Vernonia trail, then got in an 18 hole round of Frisbee golf.
If you are looking for a great day.. and a damn good workout - give this a try.
You can start out near banks, or go on on up toward Buxton.
It's a bitch of a ride to the top of Stubb Stewart..
At the top - shift over to a grueling 18 holes of Frisbee Golf. This is not an easy course - up and down. But well worth the workout.
Some sights along the way.. One of my favorites; Imagine the passenger trains that carried folks along this way..
And the essential Gear!....
WATER!!! Sandwich.. Frisbee.. Flask of Whiskey (for medicinal purposes!)
The classic Coleman white gas stove! Here is a product designed to last generations.. mine is from the 1970's.
Starting a Coleman white gas stove is a ritual that should be a rite of passage.... Failure to correctly start will produce a nasty yellow flame, and has put fear in the instant-on iphone generation. I realize I need to teach the technique to the next generation, before we loose this great appliance to history.
Why would I choose white gas over propane?
... One gallon of white gas will last me all summer - camping every other weekend. Propane would be three little bottles each trip - or a trash heap of disposable canisters.
... At sea level, on a sunny day, with zero wind - the propane and white gas performance is nearly the same. Add a modest wind, cold, or altitude and propane will not even boil water... white gas will not be affected. 3-min water pot boil no matter the wind or altitude.
HOW TO PROPERLY START a Coleman White Gas stove..
... With a cold stove - away from any fire or ignition source, fill the little tank.
... 1/2 turn open the pump handle, hold your thumb over the pump vent hole and pump up the pressure - 30 to 50 pumps - it will get stiff. 1/2 turn shut the pump.
... Turn the little starting lever UP!
... LIGHT YOUR MATCH and hold flame next to the main burner.... then turn on the gas knob - should be a couple turns for good mid level flame.
... If you followed the above directions, you will have a blue fast flame....
... WAIT ONE MINUTE - this is the time to heat the gas generator (YOU ARE DUMPING LIQUID FUEL INTO THE GENERATOR).. a hot generator will turn this LIQUID fuel to an efficient gas..
... AFTER ONE MINUTE - turn the little lighting lever down. And you may need to add a few pumps. (WHY - EXPANDING GAS gets COLD AND REDUCES PRESSURE!)
FAILURE to do any step exactly will load the generator, and burners, with liquid gasoline - which will burn with yellow tall flames until exhausted... If this is the case, you need to turn off the main valve - let all the raw fuel burn off, then wait an additional ten minutes before you attempt again.
Sure this seems complicated for the facebook generation. But once learned, you will have a lifetime of perfect flame, near zero trash production, and the satisfaction of knowing you are not contributing to cheap plastic and tens of thousands of little metal bottles going into a landfill.
Quest for the fountain of youth...
In my search for the fountain of youth, I'll discover a lot of mud holes...
And damn sure I'll drink more mud than I'd like to admit..
I'll keep searching wherever the trail takes me..
You might wonder if my search is in vain...
I'd be the first to tell you... I already found it. It's just down the next trail.
Good morning! Testing Tumblr...
