ラヴクラフトの短編「ダンウィッチの怪」（The Dunwich Horror）を映画化したホラー。大学生の男女が肝試しに忌まわしい伝説が残る館に忍び込むが、学生たちは封印を解いてしまい屋根裏に潜んだ魔物に襲われる。彼らは魔道書「ネクロノミコン」に記された魔界に巻き込まれていく…というお話。続編の「ダークビヨンド / 死霊大戦」（H.P.LOVECRAFT'STHEUNNAMABLERETURNS/THEUNNAMABLE 2: THE STATEMENT OF RANDOLPH CARTER）」と共に日本ではビデオ発売。

怪奇作家ラヴクラフトをハードボイルド探偵に仕立て上げたTVムービー。1940年代、黒魔術蔓延るロサンゼルスを舞台に、私立探偵ラブクラフトが、クトゥルフ神話など一連の作品に登場する禁断の書「ネクロノミコン」（死霊秘宝）を探すという物語。続編に「魔界世紀ハリウッド（Witch Hunt）」があり、日本では共にビデオ発売。
