What I love about Yunho and Mingi's relationship is they both routinely admit that it should not work: they are incompatible and they fight over small things. And yet, they keep choosing each other.
They've continued to choose each other since middle school, when they could've naturally fallen out of each other's orbits. It would've been so easy for Yunho to stop taking the bus to Mingi's school for lunch, or for them to lose touch after going to different dance academies. But they didn't! They committed to their friendship and worked hard to strengthen their bond, even after they debuted in Ateez.
For Mingi, fighting is communication. They need to keep talking in order to hash out the small issues so that they don't become bigger issues. And Yunho is the type to seek equilibrium in his relationships with other people, so he'll likely avoid conflict or wave it away with a smile (and as a consequence, not let other people closer to his heart). They clearly push each other: Yunho pushes Mingi to be more empathetic, while Mingi pushes Yunho to be more proactive and expressive (Yunho smiles and laughs around Mingi more than any other member). And as Yunho notes, they have more in common than people think: they are hard workers, they think deeply about issues in their lives, they love to dance and perform.
It's this friction that compels us as fans, because we see the rough edges of an authentic decade-long friendship between two people who have worked hard to understand each other. They've seen each other at their best and worst.
What also devastates me is that they are the only ones who will ever know the other this well. For Mingi and Yunho, no one else in Ateez was there from the very beginning.
How precious to have someone who will remember your youth??
