A blog/database of Monster High Dolls geared towards those interested in customization. Have something in your collection that you don't see in our database? You can contribute by submitting photos!
Since there’s a lack of blank Scarah photos, here’s my contribution. Some interesting notes is while she does have the same facial proportions as Spectra and Robecca, the molded eyewell is smaller than a lot of the other girls. Also her cheeks are much fuller despite having high cheek bones. I also really like the shape of her nose and her jawline is amazing.
Weirdly enough though, her head sits much lower in comparison to other girls, much like Skelita does.
Thank you so much for this database! I've just recently purchased a few MH dolls for customization and the blank faces you've posted have been invaluable for figuring out what kind of faceups I want to do :D I was wondering if it was alright to post said mockups on my tumblr, with your watermark still there of course. I didn't want to just post without your permission since you took the time to take the photos. If not, that's totally alright too :) Thanks again!
It's completely alright to do! Though it is important to check which ones came from us and which ones we reblogged. We can give you permission to use our personal photos but the others were taken by other people and have different restrictions. I'd love to see your mock ups when you're done. :)

Yes! Winsor & Newton is lovely stuff. Though for some reason it didn't work on the cam parts I was trying to remove paint from but did work on some faces. I have no idea why since it's pretty strong.
I'd also like to agree strongly with Elizabeth here. Respirator masks are great for dealing with anything with fumes though not generally necessary when working with small amounts of Acetone. Ventilation on the other hand is a must no matter what. I also tend to use nitrile gloves for just about everything. It's a bit overkill sometimes but they're cheap if you buy them by the box and it's better to be safe than sorry.
I also would like to apologize for taking so long to respond to these.
We aren't dead yet! Sorry for the gap in updates for awhile. We've had a lot on our plates and not many new dolls to cover. Here's a body review though for the Ghouls Alive Frankie!
The first thing I noticed about this body is that due to the electronics she can't sit up as much as the normal bodied dolls. I have a picture here of her from 3/4s that shows about the extent to which she can sit up. Her neck movement is also heavily impaired as she can only turn her head to the left and right with almost no up or down movement.
Her hands and lower arms come out just like on the regular bodies as does her lower legs. Her battery compartment is in the upper thigh and when her light button is pressed you can see the electronics inside her chest. Her bolts also light up which is a nice touch. The glow on her face seems to be based on areas that are painted on the inside of her head. Effectively masking off any area that shouldn't shine.
Her head is a slightly translucent hard plastic except for the top of the scalp which appears to be the normal vinyl. Some editions of her have a fully painted face presumably to try and mask the difference in texture. I rather like it like this though as I prefer it to look a little waxy instead of oddly flat as it does when fully painted over.
There's a speaker in the back of her head which is visible if you part her hair in the back and there's an obvious part line between the vinyl pieces where her hair is rooted and her face. I wouldn't suggest rerooting this doll as it would be very hard to get her head off without damaging the electronics inside. However since she does have a reasonable amount of fiber rooted to the top of her head as long as you don't plan on styling it up there is plenty to work with when it comes to restyling.
The last major difference on this version of Frankie is her earrings. They're attached to a side seam in her head by pegs. I haven't been able to safely remove them yet as they seem to be firmly attached to something on the inside of her head. They stick out at a bit of an odd angle due to how they're affixed. Especially since they aren't also attached at the ear itself. There's a small hollow in her ear lobe where the ball of the earring rests but it isn't actually secured there.
I want to know how you get the original paint off of the dolls faces
Acetone. But be really careful. I usually take a cotton round, apply a tiny bit of acetone to it, then gently rub the original paint off and make sure to immediately rinse with water. Don't soak it. The acetone will melt plastic if you let it. Winsor & Newton brush cleaner would likely also work. I just happen to be out at the moment so can't test it.
I will be getting some more brush cleaner within the next week or so and can report back at that time. It's one of the things I usually use on BJD's to remove makeup. But those aren't nearly as tough as the MH paint so I can't be 100% certain. I also refuse to use acetone on a resin head. It can work fine but I wouldn't want to risk it weakening the plastic.
You can find plain acetone in the drug store with the nail care products. Look for a nail polish remover that doesn't have lots of extra stuff in it.
As an added note, you don't really want acetone on your skin for a prolonged period of time. You not only want to wash the doll thoroughly but you want to wash your hands as well.
hi!! actually im working in some 3d models, but find references its so hard :(.... but DAMN!, find this tumblr, im so happy for this ,really thanks!!!; also, will you post skelita´s head references, its my favorite doll and want to do it as 3d character!
We're glad to hear you like us!
We already have a post with Skelita head images here: http://monsterswithoutmakeup.tumblr.com/post/42881819250/this-is-the-skelita-calaveras-head-both-with-the
If there are any other angles that would be helpful I can take more shots of her. She's still blank so it wouldn't be hard.
Sadly, I can only submit one photo in an actual photo post, so the rest should be inserted here in the text (though Tumblr is being weird, my apologies if these don't work). I hope these can come in handy somehow. :)
To date, Monsters Without Makeup has cataloged multi-angle reference shots of 27 wiped Monster High Doll head sculpts, limited angle shots of other head sculpts, and additional reference photos of various Monster High doll body parts and accessories. However, our mission is far from complete, and we still have several sculpts missing from our database!
Click below to see what's missing, and what you can do to help!
Venus McFlytrap and the CAM Skeleton girl have been wiped and photograph, and Toralei Stripe, Rochelle Goyle, and the Werecat Twins are awaiting wiping. This still leaves eight common dolls that we do not own in our personal collection, and either do not plan on obtaining or will not be obtaining soon. These dolls are:
Cleo De Nile
C.A. Cupid
Catrine DeMew
Jinafire Long
Create-A-Monster Mummy Girl
Create-A-Monster Gorgon Girl
Create-A-Monster Vampire Boy
Create-A-Monster Puma Boy
If you have a wiped doll for any of these sculpts, it would be of great assistance to Monsters Without Makeup and the customizers that utilize our blog as a resource if you could help add them to our database! What we are looking for are in-focus photographs of the cleaned doll (with or without hair, but preferably with the hair pulled out of the face) directly from the front, a three-quarters view, and a profile shot, plus any other angles you think do well to showcase the features of the sculpt.
You may also add photos of dolls we already have in our database if you think there was something missed in the initial photoset post.
Due to their scarcity, we doubt that we will be obtaining multi-angle clean head shots of Clawd Wolf, Gil Webber, Holt Hyde, Jackson Jekyll, or Scarah Screams, but we will also accept photos of these dolls ONLY with their factory makeup still on.
To add to the database, you may use the submit link under "Contribute to the Database!" at the top of the page. Text descriptions are optional; the MWM admin reviewing your post may chose to add additional commentary. MWM will not watermark or otherwise alter your photos; if you so choose, you may add your own personal watermark so long as it is inconspicuous and does not cover obscure the content of the image. Contributors will be credited in the post, either in the comments or a source link.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and even greater thanks should you decide to submit photos!
Wow, somehow we burned through our que! Going by these pictures, it looks like the CAM Mummy features a wide, sculpted bridge and sharp cheekbones like Nefera and Cleo, but wider eyes and a more narrow face than either.
To follow the Werewolf is the other doll in the same package, the Create-A-Monster Dragon!
The Dragon is definitely one of those faces you can't feel neutral about; while the Werewolf has balanced features with everything in moderation, the Dragon is made of extremes. She features a broad face with very prominent cheekbones and a comparatively narrow jaw, smaller-than-usual but well-defined eyes, a ridged and low-bridged nose (similar to the Harpy's), a pointed chin, and a wide mouth with a full lower lip (almost an underbite like Abbey's).
He look is undeniably unusual, but overall quite lovely an exotic: a good addition to the girls designed to work well with their motif.
Back to the Create-A-Monsters once more: this time, it's the Werewolf from the Dragon and Werewolf pack.
She was a bit hard to photograph due to the color of the vinyl used for her (a very pale grey, paler than Ghoulia), but overall she has a rather nice face! Her features are very well balanced: evenly spaced eyes, moderately defined cheekbones, cheeks that full, but not too round or gaunt. Her nose has a nice curve to the tip, and her lips are decently plump with a deep indent between them.
Some detail shots on the fins and hands of Lagoona Blue's body! These photos show her default hand pose; Skulltimate Roller Maze at the very least comes with one hand in an alternate (these hands are from a Dance Class Lagoona).
The paint on her arms and hands isn't an exact match to the paint on her body, and is instead more saturated. Like her hands, her arms are made of some sort of thicker vinyl, so the paint on them might be easier to remove.
The fins on her calves are removable, and positioned about 3/4 of the way towards the back.
A quick comparison post showing the size difference between Abbey Bominable's default hands and the standard Monster High girl hands (these belong to the Create-A-Monster Vampire). The CAM Siren also uses Abbey's hand mold.
Also take note of the size difference between the insertion pegs on the CAM hands and the regular doll hands.
Part one of the details on Robecca Steam's body! I took too many photos of her since the detailing spans her entire body, so there's also a part 2!
Robecca's unique body sculpt is pretty dang cool; it's covered in indented lines and raised "rivets," giving her that neat pieced-together look (even her hands have them at the joints and palm lines).
But one of the coolest parts of her body is... the moving gears on her calves! My Dance Class Robecca came with one gear kind of stiff, and I eventually figured out it was some of the flashing sticking out in the gear well; it was close enough to the opening that I was able to stick the tip of an x-acto knife in there and scrape it off.
Also worth noting is that the plastic of her body has a subtle copper shimmer suspended in it, similar to her head!
For our first MH accessory review, we present to you the wing harness from the Ghouls Rule Draculaura!
Rather than back-mounted wings like those seen on Rochelle, Draculaura's wings from this set are a harness that hooks around her shoulders and waist. They have about a 180 degree range of motion towards the front or back. The wings have some indented detailing along the edges, and the outward side of the harness has detailing for straps. There's a pink bow that mounts to the bottom of the waist strap, but it's easily removable and the mounting tab looks like it would be simple to cut off and sand at the edges.
While not quite as cool as back-mounted wings, the harness structure of these means that they're very simple to incorporate onto the other basic dolls without modification. They look pretty stylish as is, but have the potential to look even greater with a careful repaint!
