Dustfinger's hands are pressing against her stomach, desperate to stem the flow of blood.

"Anya...Anya..."

She's lost consciousness again, and she's still bleeding out.

Heedless of propriety, Dustfinger tilts her forward and peels her shirt over her head, using the fabric to wipe blood away enough to see where the wounds are and press it against them.

His hands are soaked and stained immediately.

He chokes out a sob. He doesn't know what to do. He's only rarely seen a person survive injuries like this, and that with expert care, which he entirely lacks.

If he could talk to fire, he could at least cauterize the wounds. He has matches; he has a knife. Would the metal even get hot enough? There isn't time to build a fire.

He pulls her closer, struggling to stand with her in his arms and keep pressure on the wounds with one arm wrapped around her at the same time. He moves on instinct, stumbling back the way he came, back toward the village that has held both harm and healing for him so many times.

There’s another small stirring as he lifts her, eyelids twitching as movement elicits a near-silent whimper. But then she is still again. The fabric and pressure slow the flow of her blood, but it doesn’t stop it and with every minute that passes her usually feverish skin cools as the fire in her veins grows weaker, unable to feed from her energy without stealing from her that which she needs to just survive.

And survive she does, despite everything working against her. Despite the time it takes to get help. Despite the way only bandages and pressure can be used to staunch the blood flow, any attempt to cauterize the wound failing. Inexplicably, for now, she cannot be burned. No matter how hot they make the fire, her flesh remains unchanged. Uncharred. But pressure and bandages eventually work, and as the heat of her body slowly returns, the fire prevents infection from settling in as well.

And eventually, she does stir again. Lashes flutter against her cheeks, a low moan sounding as pain registers in full. And then comes the panic. The widened eyes, the cry of pain as she bolts upright, the too-quick breaths as she frantically tries to make sense of her surroundings and the events that brought her here.

He pulls her hand closer to his side, returning her gentle grip with his own.

"Usually I'd have to ask permission first at a place like this," he murmurs, hardly daring to speak lest he break whatever spell is holding them together.

He learned the hard way that this world is much more organized than it may first appear. Events like these are usually put on by some group of important people, though they don't always splash their names and symbols all over it like nobility in his world. He even needs to be careful on street corners in some larger cities.

"But let them chase us out if they don't like it."

He wants to dance, and not only for himself, but for whatever tender shoot of vulnerability is nudging its way out of Anya's heart in this moment.

The corners of her lips turn up — a small, rare smile — and as her gaze rises to meet his again, there’s a glimmer of anticipation in the amber of her irises. For once, with the shadow of childlike wonder and anticipation on her features, she almost looks her age not just in rounded cheeks, lanky limbs, and her short stature but in every part of her. Come morning, her walls would be back up, of course, but tonight, surrounded by Christmas lights and with imagination at the forefront of her focus, she’s nothing more than a little girl. Almost just like any other if not for her lingering too-tentative nature.

“Okay.” Her head nods but she hesitates to let go off his hand. It’s a kind of contact, a kind of affection, that she has craved despite also never knowing it. They had a few more moments before he had to let her go to set up right? “We’ll go right in the middle? Like it’s another world?”

Anya’s gaze rises, taking in the other girl. They look to be about the same age, though that seems to be where the similarities stop. Claudia is wild, rebellious, and free while Anya knows she’s quiet and cautious to the extreme. But on this, they seem at least somewhat similar. Riddled with guilt they should never have been made to carry.

“I think most people think we’re wrong. Cause we’re kids and all. But my parents don’t. They really love me.”

That is said with conviction, but then comes the sigh. The dropped shoulders.

“I just…I don’t know.”

But of course she does. She knows. But Anya has also never brought herself to say it out loud before.

This girl wasn't born in a world like Dustfinger's. He has to remind himself of that repeatedly. She was born in a place that claimed to prize equality and sought to eradicate suffering and discomfort wherever possible. That wasn't Anya's experience, but it's what she sees all around her. It seems possible.

If she'd been born in Dustfinger's world, she would already have seen enough public executions, mistreated servants, and cruel, powerful men to teach her that life hurts. The pain is just the cost of living.

"You can't, Anya."

She doesn't understand how these things work, how hurting one person only leads to retaliation by more, until people want to hurt you just because they've heard of you hurting others, until you become the one spreading harm.

He rolls one aching shoulder wearily. Anya has seen the bruises on his face, but he's kept those beneath his clothes from her as best he can. They're just the price he pays for a certain amount of security, but he knows she won't ever understand that.

"You want to be safe? Go somewhere else. Get on a boat or a train and start over somewhere else. But I need these people. You hurt one of them and you'll have to hurt them all. And then what do you think they'll do to us? To me?"

The tears in her eyes spill over in full and for a silent moment, Anya only moves to scrub them away. It isn’t fair. Nothing in her life had ever been fair, truly, but she had thought that by escaping her father, she would be able to find a better life. But is this truly better? She has more freedom, and she’s not alone anymore, but at its core, it’s not much different, is it? She is still at the mercy of men who want to control them and she’s been rendered helpless to do anything about it.

It makes her sad, and then it pisses her off.

“It’s not fair,” she says like a petulant child. “I just want us to be safe. Why can’t we be safe?”

He gazes apprehensively up at the open sky. They'll be unprotected if any bad weather comes, or if any sort of predator tracks them down in the night.

All the same, he needs Anya to tell him that this is a good spot to stop. If they don't, she'll be dragging him before long.

She doesn’t really believe it, and maybe if Dustfinger weren’t so desperate he’d see it too, but even Anya can tell there’s something wrong with him. Rest is the only thing she can think to do about it. And she has to do something. Not only does she like Dustfinger, not only does the thought of being alone again terrify her, but she needs him to survive. The world was easier to navigate with him at her side. It’s a matter of heart and fondness, but it’s also a matter of survival.

After a long pause, a sad and almost condescending smile creeps over his mouth. She's only a girl, who thinks she's invincible. She can't fathom what he's talking about, so she wants to be strong like she thinks he is.

"It's no shame to be burned. That's what fire does. I've had a very long time to learn to avoid it."
