Kenma furrows his brows together as his hands click away at his keyboard. Almost 4 hours of streaming for his ‘birthday special’ that his followers suggested he do were draining his life source as he waited for the clock to strike midnight. Just one more game, he thought. One more game, and he’d take a break.
One more game, and he’d turn another year old.
Kenma didn’t care much for birthdays. Or, at least, his own. So what if he was another year old? He understood that life was precious — hell, he’s died too many times in countless video games to not know that — but it was usually the same thing every year: his friends still called him early in the morning, Kuroo would still take him out to dinner, and then he’d simply go back home. It was all too mundane; there was nothing special about it. Nothing made it memorable enough to be a birthday, and he doubted he even knew what one felt like at this point.
The only thing that made him at least a bit excited for this year’s birthday was, well, you.
After all, this would be the first birthday he’d be able to spend with you. He had no idea what you were planning, but he knew you were planning something big. You always made big gestures on people’s birthdays, either by buying them thoughtful gifts or throwing a whole surprise party complete with their entire family and a buffet. Just thinking of what you had planned made him anxious, he didn’t want his peace ruined on his birthday of all days. He loved you so dearly, but he didn’t know how to tell you that he just wanted to spend today with you, the one person that made him feel at ease.
The boy yawned, finishing his last objective before moving his character to the center of the map to fight more enemies. His eyes scanned the comments for a second, smiling faintly at the multitude of ‘happy birthday’’s said. “It’s not my birthday yet, but thank you guys, truly. Here, look, I’ll win this last match for you all.”
You opened the door slowly, careful not to make a noise as you held the cupcake close to your chest. A string of curses came out of Kenma’s mouth, almost making you jump before you realized he was in game mode. You rolled your eyes playfully, slipping the lighter out of your pocket to light the little red candle in the center of the dessert. A smile embraced your features as you crept towards his chair, waving towards his webcam to his fans. Almost instantly, more comments flooded the chat, but Kozume was too busy grinding to notice.
“Happy birthday to you,” you sang softly, tapping your boyfriend’s shoulder as you stood beside him. You continued the tune, watching as Kenma’s eyes lit up at the mere sight of you. He wore the purest of smiles and the faintest blush while you grabbed his free hand with yours and intertwined your fingers. You finished the song with a kiss to his cheek, saying, “Happy birthday, Kozume.”
Kenma softened at your words, pressing a kiss to your knuckles before grabbing the cupcake out of your hands. He blew it out, smiling once more as you teased him to tell you what his wish was. “It won’t come true if I tell you, Y/N.” He sighed, running a hand through his locks. “Oh, shit,” he muttered, realizing he was still streaming. “Sorry guys, um, t-thank you all so much for the birthday wishes, a-and for watching through that, um, exchange. I’ll see you guys next Tuesday, Kodzuken out.”
Wrinkling your nose, you rubbed circles into his palms. “Have I ever told you how cheesy your outro is?” You teased. Kenma chuckled, slumping back into his chair, “Not as cheesy as you singing me happy birthday at midnight.”
“But you enjoyed it, Ken,” you pouted, giving him your best puppy dog eyes.
Kenma sighed again, patting his lap. You obliged, moving to sit on top of him before laying your head on his chest. “I did enjoy it,” he muttered, pressing a kiss to the top of your head, “thank you, angel.”
You kissed his jaw in response, embracing the warmth of his body against yours. “I knew you didn’t want anything big, so, this seemed like my best bet.” Kenma relaxed at your confession. The amount of appreciation he had for you in his heart has never been higher than at that moment. You were one of the only people to ever understand him so well, and he knew that having you at his side was the best birthday present he could ever receive.
“Oh! I still have your card, if you want to read it now, babe.” You exclaimed. God, you poured hours into that card since you figured Kozume would appreciate something heartfelt than a big party. To be fair, he wasn’t really the celebratory type, but you found it important to let him know he was loved, especially on his birthday.
Kenma shook his head, “I’ll read it later, promise.” He stroked the underside of your thigh, laying his head atop yours as he switched the game on his screen to a lofi playlist with his free hand. “Knowing you, you’re probably going to make me cry with some long letter.”
You swatted his chest, before sinking back into your place. “Yeah, that’s fair. Just wanted to tell you how much I love you on your big day, Ken.”
Kenma smirked, “I know you do, Y/N. Knowing you love me is, i-it’s the only thing I’m sure of sometimes.” You melted at his words, bringing your hand to rest against his cheek. “You can always count on me, loser,” you said playfully, “even though I’m better at Smash.” He cocked an eyebrow at you, reaching for the two controllers on his other table and handing one to you. “Want to test that theory, kitten?”
Smirking, you grabbed the controller out of his hands, “I’ll go easy on you since it’s your birthday.” Kenma rolled his eyes, ruffling your hair. “Yeah, good luck with that.”
You laughed, laying your head on his shoulder as he started up the game. Your eyes flitted to the cupcake he shared with you earlier. “Hey babe,” you muttered, “you never did tell me what you wished for.”
“Because it wouldn’t come true if I did, Y/N.” Kenma clicked his tongue when he saw your angel eyes staring up at him.
“I wished for a life with you,” he said softly, not daring to look at you after saying something so romantic it almost made him throw up. “I know, it’s cheesy.”
You giggled, turning his head with your hand to capture his lips in a kiss. One kiss led to more as you tangled your arms behind his head and pulled him closer to you. Kenma molded his lips against yours, heat rushing through his body as he tried to commit this moment to memory. Pulling away, you rested your forehead against his. “It might’ve been cheesy, but it was cute, I’ll give you that.” You squeezed his hand, “You’ve got me forever, Kenma. Happy birthday.”
The boy pulled you in once more, smiling in between rushed kisses, “Best birthday ever.”
