It took James longer than he would’ve liked to have recognized the sound of gunshots. Granted, he wasn’t that familiar with the idea of muggle guns. Or muggle anything. As the chaos grew in the space, James spent most of his time trying to figure out where Lily had gone. They were together at one point before finding themselves separated. Even as the place started to clear out, he couldn’t find her and felt his fears start to grow even more. So his mind took him to Mungos. Maybe she had taken someone where there. Maybe she had gone back home. But he couldn’t be too sure, so he had to start somewhere.
Walking into Mungos, it was a bit of a mess with everyone running around. James honestly wasn’t surprised with everything that had just happened. People were yelling and looking for loved ones, just like he was.
Even though James was new in the whole auror office, he had become familiar enough to recognize people form their office. So when he saw Moody standing in front of the list of people, James paused for a moment and thought about who he might be looking for.
Walking up to the older male, James paused a moment before speaking. “Moody, you looking for someone here?” he asked. Maybe the other male had seen Lily. Or maybe James had seen someone he was looking for.
It was rare that Alastor acted without direction, but it was undeniable that this was one of those times. He knew of few who’d made it to St. Mungo’s, for he’d seen them there himself; he’d put Dorcas into a hospital bed and had hounded a Healer until she’d agreed to tend to the girl personally, but had not been able to strong-arm the others into similarly appropriate care. Of course, he knew he should have been trying his very best to leave St. Mungo’s as soon as possible, to return to the field of battle in hopes that one of their assailants still lurked - his wand hand tingled at this thought - but he found himself very much stuck here until his peace of mind could be satisfied.
What was a soldier such as himself without the allies he’d so carefully chosen? It’d do him no good to charge blindly back into battle without knowledge of their condition; and what little heart he possessed, hardened and brittle as it was, would simply not allow him.
Speaking through a billow of smoke from between his lips, and ignoring the disparaging glares of the Healers, he turned to James with obvious relief upon his face. No matter how strong his skepticism about Potter had been at first, it had been assuaged and satiated since. He was glad that the kid had made it out in one piece, but it was clear that his worries aligned with Alastor’s - though James’s stake in the welfare of their allies was decidedly more personal.
“Anyone -” he clipped, cigarette bobbing between his lips, “and everyone. Weasleys and Meadowes all accounted for; the others, though, not as certain. Too many damn rooms in this damn hallway, and not enough Healers willing to answer a simple question.” He took a puff, a deep breath, and looked to James. “Walk with me, Potter -” a pause, “- we’ll account for Evans first.”
