Hey creatures!!! I wanted to ask ya’ll something. I’m trying to start an Etsy business-but specifically oriented towards alterhumans/nonhumans.

However, I don’t want it to be like most shops I’ve seen-masks and tails and a few other things, but thats it. But I don’t exactly know what all to put in my inventory-I have some ideas, obviously, but I’m a bit stuck.

So, I wanted to ask you guys!!! No matter what or who you are-please respond!! I want to make things for as wide a range of people as possible! Animal, creature, object, character, concept, WHATEVER YOU ARE-this also includes otherpaw and everything-tell me what kinds of products ypu would like to see! (Art, jewelry, affirming things, wearable items, etc etc-literally anything you can think of that relates to your nonhumanity that you would like to see as a product/that you would buy)

I would greatly appreciate some help-I need to know what to sell, and what better place to get opinions than within part of the community itself?

I’m going to a hearthome this weekend! I’m really excited. For me, my veing an animal isnt always…the center of my life. You know? I’m aware I am one, but for the most part I’m cool with people seeing me wrong-It doesnt bother me thst much bc I know what I am, it doesn’t matter if they see it-although of course there are dysphoric days where I feel awful in my human skin. However! Because appearances and outward perception arent the center of my identity, other things are. To frel most connected to myself, I enjoy being present. Noticing things like the light through leaves, the sound of the breeze rustling the trees, the smells of various things in the air…all of this gives me joy and, for some reason, makes me feel more like a wolf. Being present in small moments allows me to feel grounded and at peace, connecting me deeper to my animal self. I’m excited to go to my hearthome because it will not only be grounding and peaceful to be out in nature, but I’m hoping it will also feel like…home. I’m hoping that when I get to the place I know I belong, I will feel peaceful and happy, and I’m hoping the lines between my body and the body I want will blur. Maybe what I see and what is physical will sort of merge. I don’t know, it’s hard to explain-but I’m excited because I feel like I’m going home, and I can’t wait to feel like I belong and have a place.

an otherkin is someone who identifies as a non-human, usually mythical or fantasy, this term is sometimes used as an umbrella term for the community.

an otherlink is someone who voluntarily identifies as a non-human on any level for any reason. coping, loving, dysphoria, 'heartedness, fun, and much more.

an otherheart is someone who feels a strong connection with anything. usually with feelings of being family or close friends, understanding (which can sometimes overlap with relating), being two sides of the same coin, being a reflection of each other, or being a projection of the 'hearted individual.

anything with "kin" attached (ex: conceptkin, placekin, plantkin, dragonkin) is usually only used for/by otherkin, classifying someones (other)kintype. As in what kind of grouping of otherkin they identify as.

anything with "type" attached (ex: kintype, hearttype, linktype, syntype, kithtype) is usually a more specific classification, like this:

Sometimes I envy pets. I don’t want to be one, although I think it’s an admirable thing to be-a companion, a friend, especially to humans, who are strange and unpredictable. I do not want to be a pet, but I do long for the bond. I want someone I can count on, and who can depend on me. I envy the sense of love and care that pets seem to have with their humans. I suppose I don’t want an owner-what I want is a pack. But I don’t have one. And I won’t be able to have one for a while. Sometimes, like the ancient wolves of the past, I feel compelled to push myself down and make myself presentable for humans. Even if people aren’t a pack, it’s still something. But I do not. I wait. I watch. I sit in lonely patience. I will stare at the moon in solitude for however many years I need. I know my pack is out there somewhere, waiting for me. And I will wait for them. For however long it takes.

I get that people are frustrated that social media culture emphasizes surface-level content (because believe me I am, too), but it's really worth noting that "puppyposting" teens have always been here, the internet as a whole has just shifted toward centering shorter, less serious content and that's why those posts get so much traction and longer informational or introspective content gets lost. This isn't an isolated community issue, it's a societal one, and doing yet another round of teens-vs-adults is not going to fix the structure and culture of the entire internet.

I can assure you that nonhumans were posting the same kinds of "silly" stuff on the younger-demographic forums I was on in the 2000's. The difference is that there are now no high-traffic avenues for serious discussion and information, and community newcomers have grown up with social media as their whole internet and don't know about the forums and personal websites that have historically been the core of the community. Newcomers, particularly younger people, do not know what the community outside of social media is like, they've only seen whatever The Algorithm has lead them to which is usually not helpful or accurate information. So they see "puppyposting" and quads and links to fashion accessories and go "ah ok this is what therianthropy is about" because that's their only frame of reference.

Not wanting to engage with cutesy puppy posts is one thing, but I've seen a lot of people say they block everyone that does it and entirely avoiding people who act uninformed about our history and culture means that those people will never learn differently and will pass that on to others. So much of this community used to be about welcoming new people and teaching them about us, and that is the biggest difference I've noticed. To my knowledge there are currently no big information-based blogs, no central introductory website with an attached forum or chatroom, nowhere that's easy for newer people to find where they can actually ask questions. And while most of that is on internet culture as a whole, it's also on us to keep those kinds of resources visible and accessible when we can, and to encourage people to engage with them. I'm not going to say stop curating your tumblr feed to exclude posts you don't like, but keep in mind that blocking people who post "shallow" content also reduces their visibility of your posts. I purposely block as few people on this account as possible because I want the things I share on here to be accessible.

Since I've been back, every time I've taken the time to write out a longer post about community information or issues I've gotten flooded with people going either "finally someone said something about this" or "I had no idea, thank you for telling me" which just shows me that it's no longer part of the culture on here to formally introduce people to the community or correct misinformation, and I don't know whether that's because there isn't currently a good central source of information to direct people to, because people on here don't have the time or energy or interest, or just because most of the older community members have left social media so those kinds of posts don't end up in the tags much any more.

I know that dealing with repetitive surface-level posts and misinformed bad actors gets exhausting, but it really does feel like a lot of the culture around doing outreach to introduce people to the community has just vanished, which has lead to a whole generation of younger alterhumans who are only learning about us from their equally misinformed peers instead of from people who've actually been in the community a while. I don't know how much can be done about it given that the misinformation is coming from platforms the "core" community doesn't use, but it's worth a try. The frustrations people have with "puppyposting" are, at their core, about wanting to shift the community focus back to discussing experiences (instead of labels and aesthetics), and that starts with sharing things that encourage curiosity and learning.

Anyway. I'm currently working on a project to compile introductory information into a simple easy-to-understand format, and I have a new discord server where I and a few others are planning to start recording audio and video versions of alterhuman content in the hopes of getting better information to places like tiktok and just generally making the community accessible to people who have difficulty with reading longer content.

So I finally finished my mask!!! I’m very excited I think it turned out very well for a first attempt :3 I’m an Alexander Archipelago wolf, which is basically a very fluffy long-shouted black wolf. I put a reference pic below vvv

The base is made from cardboard and a couple of kinds of tape (one to stick stuff together and another to waterproof it). The felt is just-regular felt lol. The fur on the sides is faux fur I cut and then painted (the thing about watering down the paint is very very true-it wmade it easier to use less to cover more, and made the fur less stiff when it dried, although it is still not the fluffiest, beingg covered in paint.) And the paint I used fto pant it is just some more extremely watered down acrylic paint :3

Yeah I’m very very happy with it!!! Some things I thought I could improve on the next time I make a mask:

Make a better mask base, with real measurements and a pattern (the snout is a bit crooked, eyes and ears different sizes)

Make the ears deeper/better shaped (so I can put fur in them)

Use stronger elastic (it slips off my head sometimes)

Try and find some mesh to put in the eyes (I don’t have any rn)

Learn to shade and paint fur T-T (I’m so horrible with painting help)

Make the ears bigger (cause I want them to be)

If anybody has any feedback or tips/suggestions I’d love to hear!!!

Also just. YAAAAAAAAAAY I MADE A MASK IT WAS SO FUN I LOVE CRAFTING
