Small Witchy Challenges to Reconnect to Your Practice
Sometimes it can be hard to really feel connected to the actual magickal side of being a witch. Personally I’m involved with my deities or other spiritual/personal things 110% of the time but I don’t always feel connected to my actual witchcraft. So here are a few small magickal challenges I thought up to help anyone in a similar situation.
✨ – Set aside a time once a week to burn a candle. Make it a color that connects to whatever aspect of your life you would like insight or growth in and spend 10 minutes watching the flame and opening yourself to whatever it is you’re seeking.
✨ – If you have any books with pre written simple spells in them (most intro to witchcraft books have a section) flip through it and find a spell that calls to you and do it! As written, just to practice getting out of your head and going through the motions of spell work.
✨ – Send out blessings. To your crush. A new friend. Your best friend. Your mom. Whoever.
✨ – Call up your energy into your palms and then place them on your own heart to send yourself love and healing and to connect yourself to your energy.
✨ – Spend some time picturing the kind of witch you wish you were, your ideal witchsona if you will. Then tell yourself that’s exactly who you already are. Keep reminding yourself whenever you feel disconnected from your craft that you are already an unbelievable witch.
✨ – Go back through your old book of shadows/grimoire and reflect on what’s worked for you in the past.
✨ – Wake up and tell yourself first thing “I am a witch. I am magick. My life is full of magick. I see and feel all the magick around me. I am a witch.”
✨ – Pick out outfits or accessories that make you feel witchy. (Bonus points for intentionally planning a super witchy outfit on the full moon)
✨ – Do a spell for anything that’s coming up in your life that you want to work out a certain way, no matter how trivial it seems. Test this week? Do a spell. About to start a work out routine? Do a spell. First date? Spell. Gotta stay on budget grocery shopping? Spell. Your worth it, it’s good practice, and if it all ends up working even better!
✨ – Write down spell ideas as they come to you. Save them as notes in your phone and then come back and flesh them out in your BOS later.
✨ – Come up with your own challenges! If you’d like to share, tag me on your post or send them to me, I’d love to hear your ideas!
So I used to be a practicing witch but due to fatigue and depression I'd fallen off practice so hard that I don't even meditate and rarely read cards anymore.. do you have any advice for how to fall in love with magic again?
Start small. Don't feel like you have to rush back into full capacity, or take on everything you used to do all at once. Start with one little thing you enjoy that you can do regularly.
If you can't get in the right headspace to meditate by yourself, pull up a guided meditation and follow along. The muscle will rebuild.
Some aspects of your craft may not come back, and that's okay. You didn't fail, you've just shifted gears since then. Don't make yourself do something you're not passionate about because you used to be into it. Leave that space open for new experiences and paths that are more you!
If you spend a lot of time looking at content from other people's practices, take a step back so that you don't compare yourself to their level of activity. Social media gives off the impression that witchy content creators are constantly in the zone, and that's just not true.
As counterintuitive as it sounds, focus on the munane. Really experience the food you eat. Try to spend time getting comfortable in silence without music/videos/podcasts in the background. Drink water. Clean your space. Tend to your nest. Taking care of our physical selves gives us more energy to care for the spiritual.
Great advice! I always recommend starting with what called you back to the craft. What aspect made you want to start back up? And along those same lines, something about your craft and where you were in life wasn’t working, so like @will-o-the-witch said, it’s okay if your craft has shifted gears or changed, you may have needed that shift.
I really struggled with the craft until I reframed it and made it more accessible for myself when it came to physical and mental limitations and needs. These posts may give you some ideas of how to help turn your craft into something that feels doable (and in turn enjoyable) again:
Fatigue looks at things such as tiredness, drowsiness, exhaustion, weakness, lethargy and memory issues and says “I can do all that and more
For those of you who don’t know me, I suffer from a chronic illness and I spend a LOT of time bedridden. I also happen to be a witch! I don’
Spoonie Witch Masterpost All of my spoonie, disabled, chronically ill, mentally ill, accessible and low-energy witch posts! These are meant
Ultimately take it slow, I’ve stepped back from my craft quite a bit recently and only do little things, and that’s what I need right now. Over the years that’s fluctuated from not practicing at all, practicing a little or it being one my main focuses, then back again.
I personally think the rebuilding of my craft periods are the most formative and important! It can be tough to start again, but so worth it if you feel called to stick with the craft :)
hi! I’ve been getting more serious with my practice recently and I was wondering what resources/tips/blogs helped you the most when you were starting out or first getting deeper into witchcraft
thank you so much and hope you gave a nice day/night!
Hey, Anon! :D
Well, I have some advice, a short book list, and a few excuses. The problem with creating book recommendations for anonymous asks, is that-- and no offense, anon-- I don’t know you. It makes it a lot harder to personalize the books I recommend to you when I don’t know your likes, dislikes, hard NOs and absolute YESs! (It’s why librarians make small talk with you. How else can we know what you want?)
For instance, when I started leaving my “only looking up spells and never making any” phase, I was Wiccan, which a lot of Witches on tumblr don’t enjoy catering to. The books I were reading included more formal Wiccan and Wiccan-style witchcraft books, such as Circle of the Cosmic Muse, Janet Thompson’s Of Witches and the later Magical Hearth, besides the already interesting Deborah Blake collection. I then moved into the weirdest copy of Aradia, which is pretty directly related to Wicca’s creation as well as Italian witchcraft, as well as Doreen Valiente’s books. I even read Scire’s fiction book. The famous one. It was okay. He didn’t write any compelling characters. Spiral Dance and Drawing Down the Moon are still on my bookshelf. I SWEAR I will get to them but for now they are set dressing. This is all excluding the tome upon tome of Kemetic culture and philosophy I was hauling in my backpack everywhere.
See? Unless you’re in my situation, such as a relatively new Wiccan convert or deeply into the history of Witchcraft in the U.S. , this list doesn’t mean a lot to you.
My recommendation is to simply go deeper into what you are already interested in. Hellenic Pagan? Look into more scholar-based anthropology texts on the culture and religious background. Kitchen witch? Play around with food theory and the process of growing your locally sourced ingredients, and maybe see about taking herbalist courses. Interested in the occult side of things? Fire up archive.org and read some rare magical tomes. There will be a lot of blogs that can recommend you more specific lists as to the basics, backgrounds, and essentials, but it’s time you get down to the nitty gritty of what appeals to you, in the process of getting good at it.
So! More generic advice and book lists:
Follow someone whose craft is not like yours! They will have perspectives that invite you to open up your own. This piece of advice let me really explore more sides of the craft that I would have otherwise avoided, just because it was unfamiliar to me. Familiarity let me confront them more honestly later down the line.
Read! Reading is good for you. If you get tired of it, set it aside and try to read it on the bus or something later on. I enjoy reading at work when I am not supposed to. Ironic.
Go to local events! You don’t have to like the people you meet with, as long as it allows you to meet new people. It reaches the same point as the first piece of advice. Hey, it’s worth at least trying once!
Prune down your toolkit! Some of the things you might have bought or bought into at the beginning of your craft you may not want to use anymore. It’s okay to let that stuff go...or even gift it to a new witch you know.
Understand your ancestors. Every bloodline has perspectives to explore. Learn more about where you came, and how you came to be, and you will learn more about yourself. And, of course, not all ancestors are blood-related. Adopted ancestors and the heads of movements that tie into your sense of personhood also apply.
Edit your Grimoire! Are you still using everything you put in there? Confess-- was there smudging in there? Go in with an eraser. It’s time to clean house.
Get a library card! Book are boring and expensive! Get your library to buy them for you! It’s free!
Go to therapy. It’s therapy.
If you cannot go to therapy, try downloading those therapy worksheets you can find online for free. This is part of “learning about yourself” and “shadow work” that everyone keeps hyping up.
Now. I think that learning from the book is best, because it is easy to go back to when you have to, and is written down in case you forget something. I love books. My book list of general second-step witchcraft recommendations are as follows:
Grovedaughter Witchery by Bree NicGarran! A lot of people recommended it as book #1, but I always thought it made a great book #2. I think it would be a bit overwhelming for a new witch, but it makes a great source of advice for witches looking to expand outwards.
Traditional Wicca by Thorn Mooney. Sure, the likelihood that you’re Wiccan, anon, is pretty low, but I don’t think that this book is necessarily...for Wiccans? Sure it has Wicca in the title, but what it actually is is a tome on how to interact with and apply to a formal spiritual coven or organization. It’s a great primer on the culture of secretive societies and how to spot a good one from a bad one from a mile away.
The Study of Witchcraft by Deborah Lipp is subtitled “Advanced Wicca”, but, again, it’s one of those cases where it’s more about Witchcraft than Wicca but the authors are Wiccan so they conflate the two, and... Listen, this book is a book list in and of itself. There’s some fluff you can ignore, but the book itself is a great resource for advice on looking for older witchcraft books and the history of witchcraft. I recommend it, especially if you’re in the US.
The History of Witchcraft or any book like it-- scholarly, competent, and neutral to witchcraft culture on the whole! The history of witchcraft is nuanced and interesting and often antisemetic on top of being deeply, deeply racist! Read up!
And HERE is @breelandwalker‘s public domain witch book dropbox info! Free is good. Free is very good.
As for blogs...
A lot of the blogs I used to like have Vanished Into the Ether or otherwise Joined the Exodus After the Porn Ban or have just Stopped Posting, but I can recommend @upthewitchypunx @breelandwalker @afrocentric-divination @ancestralmedicinemagic @north-of-annwn @whichwitchami @hillbillyoracle @lazywitchling @thewitchofthenorsetrilogy @therestlesswitch @tarotio @thetwistedrope @mudanglife @madamehearthwitch...
There are numerous other blogs I want to include, but haven’t the memory to remember their names, haven’t logged on in years, etc, but this is at least a starting list. I try to follow a diverse amount of religion/witchcraft/occult blogs, but if you read my follow list, 90% of the blogs say “have not posted in 278 days” etc.
Go big, go hard, or go home. Witchcraft isn’t for the weak of heart; it’s for the grouchy and grumpy. Just listen to us argue some time! ;)
Blessings!

Hey! You!
When was the last time you cleansed your home?
When was the last time you checked your wards?
When was the last time you made sure your space was clear of bad energy, bad spirits, and other nasty things?
When was the last time you did that saltwater-incense-bell ringing thing you do?
When was the last time you did a banishing ritual?
If you feel your space is funky, here’s your reminder. Here’s your great cosmic sign. Fix that shit.
House Witch’s Chores and Witchy Home 🏡
🧺 Ward the doors and windows to protect your home and family from negativity.
🧺 Brew and stir intent into your tea and coffee.
🧺Use kitchen witchery when cooking and baking in your home.
🧺Place a glamour spell or enchantment on your make up brushes and hair brushes or combs. Make an herbal hair rinse to use and turn it into a daily glamour ritual for yourself.
🧺Color coordinate your clothes, candles, and furnishings to match your intent.
🧺Place a piece of black obsidian in the left side of your windowsills to banish negativity from your home, and place howlite in the right side of your windowsills to invite positivity and calm. This is great for bedroom windows.
🧺Meditate in the garden in the sunshine and meet the Sun in meditation. Ground yourself too through meditation and feel the earth and grass beneath you.
🧺Put peanut butter on pine cones and dip them into bird seed to create nice treats for the birds and squirrels in your garden.
🧺Take ritual baths and showers to cleanse yourself after a tough day.
🧺Talk to your houseplants, use your pendulum to ask them if they need more sunlight or water, and bless pitchers of water to welcome new houseplants into your home.
🧺If you have dream catchers hung in your home, always remember to cleanse them regularly. Dream catchers can easily become “nightmare catchers” if they are not cleansed and cared for regularly.
🧺When knitting, weave protection charms and protective energy into your projects, especially if your making sweaters, scarves, hats, or gloves for friends and family.
🧺If sewing and repairing stuffed animals like rag dolls and teddy bears, place some lavender or small rose quartz tumbled stones if possible inside the body of the stuffed animal to not only make it smell good, but imbue it with love and soothing energies.
🧺Open the windows when you clean and smoke cleanse with sage to clear out negativity from the home or use rosemary to protect it.
🧺Mop your floors with salt water to cleanse your space.
🧺Sweep dirt and negativity out of your home through the back door.
🧺Place a protective charm on you and your family’s shoes or coats.

Magical Journaling
When we think of a witch’s tools, we usually think of cauldrons, brooms, and jars filled with herbs. But for modern witches, one of the most powerful tools available is a blank journal. The journal can be an altar, a workspace, a diary, and a grimoire all in one.
Creating a Magical Journaling Practice
One of the benefits of this type of magic is that it doesn’t require a lot of tools and materials. However, there are a few things you may choose to include:
A journal, notebook, or binder. Having a physical journal for your magical practice can help to ground your magic into the physical world. Find a journal or notebook that speaks to you — this could be a composition book from the dollar store, or an elaborate leather bound journal. I highly recommend using a physical book, but if you are unable to keep a physical journal dedicated to your witchcraft, you can absolutely keep one in a Google Doc, a Microsoft Word document, or the Notes app on your phone.
Colored pens, pencils, or markers. These are a great way to include the magic of color in your journal. (See this post for info on magical color correspondences.) Writing your spells in a color that matches your intention can add an extra layer of power.
Stickers, photos, and drawings. This adds a visual component to your written spells. Just like you add things to a physical ritual based on their magical correspondences, you can use images of those things to add energy to journal spells.
A Daily Intention-Setting Ritual
This method of magical journaling is based on an exercise from Lisa Marie Basile’s book, The Magical Writing Grimoire.
In the morning, before you start your day, write your intention for the day ahead. This should be written in the present tense, and phrased in the positive — it’s about what you are doing, not what you’re stopping or trying to quit. Your intention can be anything, mental, emotional, or physical. (For example: “I am opening myself to love in all its many forms.”)
In the evening, before you go to bed, write down what you worked on that day. This can be anything you did that you feel nourished you, and it may or may not be related to your intention from the morning. (For example: “I used mindfulness meditation to become aware of my own vastness.”)
Living with intention makes you more aware of your actions and can be a form of magic in itself. You daily intentions can become positive affirmations that you can repeat throughout your day, drawing strength from the words.
Using a Journal to Cast Spells
You can cast spells on the page of your journal, with nothing more than a pen and paper.
There are four basic parts to every spell: your will, your intention, focused energy, and a ritual action. All of these components can be brought into a journaling session. Your will is your personal magical and spiritual authority — you use your will simply by being aware of it. Your intention is a clear statement of what you want to get out of your spell — in journal magic, this is typically written on the page. By directing your attention to what you are writing, you are focusing your energy. And finally, a ritual action is any act performed in a ritualistic manner — in this case, that act is writing.
When casting a journal spell, it’s best to do your work in a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed. You might choose to light a candle or burn incense to help set a spiritual/magical mood, or you might not. I recommend meditating on your intention for a few moments before you begin, in order to help focus your energy.
What you actually write is up to you. It could be a simple, straightforward statement of intention, a detailed description of what you want, or even a poem. Feel free to experiment with different methods to see what feels right for you.
Journaling with Sigils and Runes
You can incorporate sigils, runes, and other sacred symbols into your journal, or use them as spells by themselves.
I’ve talked a little bit about runes in a previous post, but here’s a quick refresher: “runes” typically refer to the symbols used in Germanic alphabets before they were replaced by the Latin alphabet. The oldest Germanic rune system, and the one most widely used in magic, is the Elder Futhark. Other Germanic runic alphabets include the Younger Futhark and the Anglo-Saxon runes, which are both descended from the Elder Futhark. There are other alphabets that are used for similar purposes in magic, like the Irish Ogham. The use of these symbols in magic comes from the ancient idea that writing is inherently magical. Both the Germanic runes and the Ogham alphabet were believed to be sacred by the people who originally used them. Because of this, the runes aren’t merely letters — each symbol has a set of spiritual meanings associated with it as well.
The nice thing about runes is that, for the most part, we have a good idea of what they meant — so learning the runes can be as simple as purchasing a book and memorizing meanings. They’re also tied to ancient belief systems, which makes them a potent source of magical power.
You can use the runes in your magical journal in a couple of different ways. You can draw the appropriate runes in the borders around your spell, or write them over your spell in a different colored ink to add their power to your words. You can also use the runes alone as a form of magic. For this, speak or chant the name of the rune as you write it, and then spend a few moment focusing on it, visualizing your goal, and charging the rune with your intent.
Sigils are a little bit different. Unlike runes, sigils are created on the spot, so the meaning of a sigil is usually only known to the person who designed it. This means that, rather than learning established meanings, you’re creating a new magical symbol with a unique meaning every time you draw a new sigil. Because of this, sigils are directly linked to your will, which makes them powerful conductors of magic.
Here’s a common method for designing a sigil: Write a word or phrase that represents your goal or desire. Cross out all the vowels and/or all repeating letters. Now, use the remaining letters (the ones that haven’t been marked out) to create a design, adding artistic flourishes as you see fit. It’s okay to get creative with this, and it’s okay if the shape of the letters isn’t obvious in the final sigil. For example: if I wanted to create a sigil to manifest wealth, I might start with the phrase “I have more money than I know what to do with.” I then cross out all vowels and repeating letters, leaving me with, “v r y k w d.” Using the shape of these letters as a starting point, I create an artistic design that carries the intention of the original statement.
Sigils are usually used on their own to conduct magic. Draw the sigil in a color that matches your intention (for my wealth sigil, I would use green). As you draw, focus on your intent and feel your energy moving through the pen, charging the sigil. You can leave the finished sigil in your journal, tear the page out and place it on your altar, or display it somewhere you’ll see it often.
Sigils are especially useful for witches who need to keep their practice a secret, because they can be disguised as simple doodles.

Liminality & Liminal Spaces
It’s been quite a while since my last original post, and I profusely apologise for my absence.
What is liminality?
The word “liminal’ comes from a Latin word “līmen”, meaning “a threshold” and its Oxford Dictionary definition is:
Relating to a transitional or initial stage of a process.
Occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold.
[Source]
That is a brief etymological explanation of liminal/liminality, but,… what is it? What is it in relation to witches and witchcraft?
