A witch starter kit
These are things you should keep on hand if you’re new to witchcraft. These items are the most versatile and useful things you can get.
A deck of cards - This can be a tarot deck or a normal playing card deck. Cards are good for divination, manifesting, and communication with the higher powers of this world.
Salt- Salt is versatile and can be used for protection most commonly.
Paper- Paper and a pen is by far my biggest recommendation for a practitioner who can’t afford/find many of other items. It can be used to make sigils, petitions, or any other forms of manifesting very easily. If you’re on a budget, go to your local discount store and buy white paper or a journal, preferably blank, and a pen, preferably black.
White candles -white candles can be used for any spell work or any intent, as long as you make the intent clear.
Safety 101 in Witchcraft
(Lesson originally taught at @alexandriarchives on June 17th, 2019)
For the sake of this lesson, I shall be using the term “working” to denote whatever witchy activity is being attempted! It can be secular, theistic, simple, complex, etc!

❌ Privacy 🚫
In my opinion, the first and foremost safety tip is having the proper level of privacy for a working. This means the level of privacy you need to feel safe and secure, the timing and and space you need to lay out your tools and ingredients. It encompasses whether you are “in the woods” (or broom closet) or if you’re known to your loved ones (that you live with at least). Even if your housemates are aware, there is still a certain level of privacy that encourages safety.
I also start with this one because it goes hand-in-hand with the next three. You need a safe amount of privacy to have a good surface for your tools and ingredients, and for your own mental health (including the self care of grounding before and after). Think about whether you’d like to take a bath or shower beforehand to help the grounding/cleansing process. It’s a personal preference, but it’s something to keep in mind with the timing aspect of your privacy.
———
🎴 Surfaces/Tools 🕯
Think about what kind of working you are trying to complete. Does it involve water? Fire? Make sure to use an appropriate surface for that, as well as have things arranged in such a way that they aren’t damaged. Don’t put your Tarot cards right next to your large bowl of water or your candle flame!
Sometimes accidents happen. Have a fire plan ready if you are using any in case a small candle flame catches on something flammable and becomes larger. Additionally, have a similar plan for sharp implements that you use. For example, have a first aid kit nearby if you’re using a sharp objects just in case something happens during your working. Especially good for if you’re working with blood magic.
Though this is the mundane section of the lesson, things in witchcraft often overlap so also keep in mind the spiritual safety of your surfaces and tools. This is a more personal distinction so I don’t have specifics to lay out for every one of you. For example, things like spirit vessels or Tarot cards with certain personalities that may not want to be nearby during certain workings. Also keep your notes and grimoire safe from splatters or flame as much as you can! (A touch can give it character though 😉)
———
🐚 Ingredients 🌿
Please do not use any ingredients that you don’t have confidence of their interactions. This goes doubly for anything consumed or put on your skin, but it’s still important with anything you burn or with touch tools that you will later touch. Don’t forget this applies to crystals as well as plants and spices! Think about alternative ways to use an ingredient that you aren’t sure of being safe to consume or burn- submerge it, bury it? But also keep in mind what is safe to bury outside if you plan on that. There’s no shame in using your trashcan as a symbolic burying for a working that isn’t safe for nature.
Certain incenses and essential oils are bad for your pet friends AND/OR your children. Do some rudimentary research on what is safe for the other inhabitants of your home and do NOT apply an essential oil to your skin without a carrier oil. Take a moment to spot test it on a small patch of skin near some soap and water too before using it ritually/magically.
A Note on Crystals:
Certain crystals are toxic. There’s typically good lists of what’s toxic and what isn’t but the general rule of thumb is that malachite, cinnabar/cinnabarite, and galena. While malachite is fine tumbled, it’s really not good for you raw (it is made up of 57% copper). And don’t put crystals in your body cavities (like your vagina, anus, mouth, etc). Certain crystals also interact funkily with certain elements, like sunlight, water, salt, etc. Just do your research before using them in your work.
———
🌡 Physical and Mental Health 🏥
Beyond the space, tool, and ingredient safety concerns, your own self is absolutely a vital component to a workings. Therefore, so is your physical and mental health. Try to consider what state you are in as diplomatically as you can- pushing yourself can have longterm trouble in later workings and it’s important to be gentle with yourself.
But it doesn’t automatically mean you have to cancel your working. Often you can re-tailor it to account for your current state. Do a simpler one, one in a different location so you can sit or lay down more easily, alter the ingredients and steps so you can do it in the bath. Witchcraft is what you make of it!

⛰ Grounding/Cleansing 🚿
Grounding is a series of steps you do to center and care for yourself prior to and after a working. I couple it with cleansing because there are many types of grounding that include a cleansing aspect/step. There are many methods of grounding and there will be a whole other class on that so I won’t go into too much detail. Just remember that it does need to be done afterwards as well to reconnect yourself with the world at large after the intensity of a working- even a simple one can wobble you, so to speak!
Also keep in mind that there are many methods of grounding; don’t feel like you need to do the same as others have said worked for them. Showers/baths, a snack, touching the ground, listening to music, playing a video game, petting an animal- these are all valid! The only general rule I encourage for everyone is to drink some water or other simple refreshment afterwards (no alcohol).
———
🛡Warding/Shielding ⚔️
Warding is an energy working that creates a protective layer around a location. Shielding is the same but is mobile, ideally for a person (like the practitioner themselves!).
It is extremely important to have the basics down of this before doing workings just to be safe. It’s likely they won’t be needed in any direct way until you do more intense workings, but they will maintain your space and build on themselves so that you are blind-sighted.
Shielding yourself is most easily done with an anchor- a piece of jewelry or pocket sized item that you have the shield tied to. That way you don’t have to actively focus on it all day when you can just wear/have the anchor. The first time you tie it to the anchor you will need to carefully craft it bit-by-bit. It is commonly done by visualizing (like building a wall, net, bubble, etc.) or can be alternatively done with another sense. You could do it in a tactile fashion by sculpting it, drawing it, creating it in a video game and setting the anchor on the craft to tie it. You could use music or scents as well. The primary goal is the careful, deliberate building of the energy and then directing it to its purpose. Take your time, don’t rush. Repair and recharge your shield anchor at least once a month, or more often if you notice its effect diminishing. Recharge either with your own energy or you can use other sources like the sun, moon, crystals, the earth, sigils, etc!
Wards are very similar, they just encompass a location and are stationary. Often this is the practitioner’s home. You can have physical anchors (many people like crystals, witches bottles, or potted plants) or you can tie the ward to the home/property itself. Don’t forget to repair and recharge these as well!
You also want to recharge your wards and shields at least once a month, more if you feel that it’s necessary.
Wards have different purposes: defensive/energy purposes and offensive/entitiy purposes. They have the double effect of containing your energy and your workings from leaking out and protecting any other unintentional energy leaking into you. Think like a backyard pool where you don’t want the water going all over your yard- you want it to stay in the pool. Offensive is more deliberate protection for if a specific entity or energy that is trying to get in. It’s the fence that keeps the neighbour from using the pool when you don’t want them to. It’s more actionable protection.
———
👻 Spirit Safety 👻
If you intend to do any spirit work with communication, inviting, seeking, etc., it’s important to add onto the warding and shielding the ability to banish. If your desired location for this working is in your own home, a comprehensive House Rules prepared for any spirits you allow into your wards is also recommended.
House rules are a (generally written) list of agreements for the protection of yourself and all your housemates (human or pets). Think of them almost like understood guest rules when you have someone come over. Yes, you don’t necessarily present them to your guest upon their entrance but that is because we live in a common society with an understanding of what is polite. The spirits you are dealing with do not. It is not considered rude in the spirit community to ask them to agree to a set of house rules.
For spirits that pre-existed in your home: establish that this is your home and you want to respect them but there are still rules that they need to follow. Show them your house rules. If they don’t agree to them, banish them.

🌿Lavender Tea Infusion🌿
Lavender is one of my favorite herbs to use and grow, as it has many uses and is very fragrant. It’s a hardy perennial that falls under the house of Mercury, and usually has protective, clarifying, and even cleansing energies.
Lavender is most often used to calm ones nerves, or headaches from stress and fatigue. A lesser known use is that it can also be made into a diluted wash to be used for acne or skincare as well!
🌿To make the infusion, I used dried Lavender buds from a local Asian market, where it is sold to be put into tea. Per the instructions, you must rinse the buds and then soak them in water for around 30 minutes.
🌿For my own brew, I used ½ ounce of Lavender buds and once they had been soaking, I steeped them for 15 minutes in 1 pint of hot water. Feel free to add honey or other sweeteners to taste! The infusion comes out pleasantly fragrant and not too strong.
*Please make sure that when making herbal teas that you know where your herbs are coming from! Some may not be edible due to pesticides or other circumstances, so make sure that you do research before consuming them.
**Also, please be aware that using too strong of an infusion or using concentrated oil of Lavender can cause headaches, skin irritation, constipation, or an increased appetite. The herb also may interact with any sedatives that you may be taking.
✨ Enjoy, and blessed be! ✨
Lovely recipe ,3
cleansing crystals
full moon: on the night of a full moon, leave your crystals outside to soak up the moonlight, the crystals will still receive the energy even if it’s cloudy or raining! (but make sure the crystals can safely be in contact with water!!)
sunlight: leave your crystals out to bathe in the sun for a few hours (Amegreen, Amethyst, Ametrine, Aquamarine, Celestite, Citrine, Fluorite, Kunzite, Opal,Rose Quartz, Smoky Quartz, Spirit Quartz, Super Seven, Topaz, and Turquoise should not be left out in the sun!!)
sage/incense: waft the smoke over the crystals, or hold the crystals in the smoke, let the smoke reach every side of the crystal
water: let your crystals soak in a nice cool water bath, or place them under running water, visualise the water cleaning out any negative energy (Calcite, Desert Rose, Halite, Hematite, Lodestone, Malachite, Satin Spar, and Selenite should not be placed in water!!)
earth: bury your crystals in the soil for a few hours and the earth will soak up negative energies (again, be cautious about rain!)
sound: place your crystals in front of speakers and play your favourite music!! the vibrations from sound waves will pass through the crystals and reset their vibrations to their original state
flower petals: bury your crystals in a bowl of flower petals, choose a flower that has extra healing properties to help your crystals
visualisation: hold your crystal in your hand and envision a white light surrounding it, then see a white beam pass through the crystal, taking the negative energy away
CIRCLE CASTING 101
A magickal circle is an energetic construct that you build or envision around yourself before working magick, doing a ritual, some like to cast a circle before meditating or reading tarots. For a solitary practitioner the circle is typically 5-6 ft in diameter, but the size expands based on the size of the group. It can be defined physically, energetically, or both.
Circles provide protection and serves as a container for your personal energy as well as the energy you conjure.
Please remember that this is just what i personally like to do when casting a circle, but that there are many methods.
Preparation for circle casting
1. Determine how much space you will need.
2. Cleanse your area. Vacuum, sweep, throw away any trash in the area.
3.Make sure you have everything you need for your ritual! Theres nothing more frustrating than having your circle casted and realizing you’ve forgotten an herb or any supplies you need for the work you’re about to do.
4. Purify your area. Light purifying incense, sage, sprinkle salt and holy 💧. Most importantly, Visualize the negative energy dispersing. If you don’t focus & visualize, your physical actions will have little effect. Visualization is hands down one of the most important things in any and all magickal workings!
5. Now its time to cast your circle!
Visualize protective energy coming from within you and direct it towards your casting arm. Focus it through a casting tool (Athame, wand, or ✋) and visualize a beam of energy coming from it and settling on the ground. Trace your circle with this energy, 3 times in a clockwise direction. Once for protection, once for focus, and once for power.
Call the 4 quarters
Face North and say “I call to the North, to the element of Earth. Grant me (us if not practicing alone) your endurance, your strength.” Sprinkle salt onto your altar or crumble soil into a bowl on your altar.
Face East and say “I call to the East, to the element of Air. Grant me your creativity and your intuition.” Light incense, wave a fan,or drop feathers onto your altar.
Face south and say “I call to the South, to the element of Fire. Grant me your passion and your energy.” Light candles.
Face west and say “I call to the West, to the element of Water. Grant me your empathy and your emotion.” Pour blessed/storm/moon/natural water into a bowl or into your chalice.
Now would be the time to call on any deities you’d wish to work with. You can call any Goddess or Angel by personalizing this to them. I typically do not personally work with deities, but if you were to want to, Call to them similar to how the Elements are called. Ex. “I call to Gaia, Mother Goddess, Spirit of Earth.” and then place an offering symbolizing them, so for Gaia you might place grain on your altar as an offering.
If not solitary, now would be the time to invite others to the circle. The group leader typically invites others in by a series of phrases, although i know every coven has their own method fine tuned for themselves, This is just the method i’ve seen used and am familiar with. Group leader:”Children of the Goddess, I now invite you to enter our circle.” Each member will be asked “How do you enter this circle?” The response should be “In perfect love and perfect trust.”
Now its time to raise energy. This is the most important part of this process. It is so important because when you open your circle at the end of spellwork, You release all of your energy you have filled with intent out into the universe to go manifest whatever it may be you have called to. You want as much energy as possible to be released carrying your intent!
Here are a few ways! There is no wrong way to do this part, and there are SO MANY ways. You can fine tune this all to you. Remember that this is your ritual, and you want your energy fully behind everything you are doing. This is all customizable, most of all the energy raising.
-Witches Rune Chant
“Darksome night and shining Moon,
East, then South, then West, then North,
Hearken to the witches’ rune;
Here i come to call thee forth.
Earth and Water, Air and Fire.
Wand and pentacle and sword,
Work ye unto my desire,
Hearken ye into my word.
Cords and censer, scourge and knife,
Power of the witches blade waken all ye unto life,
Come ye as the charm is made.
Queen of Heaven, Queen of Hell, Lend your power unto my spell,
and work my will by magic rite.
By all the power of Land and Sea, By all the might of Moon and Sun,
As I do will, So mote it be;
Chant the spell, and be it done.
Eko, Eko Azarak
Eko, Eko Zamilak
Eko, Eko Karnayna
Eko, Eko Aradia”
-Meditating to raise energy. Visualize energy building and building by visualizing warm, yellow light fill your body until its expanding out of your body and filling the dome above your circle. visualize it filling with energy until you are content.
-Music or Drumming, Dancing and Chanting.
Once you reach your desired energy level, it is time to get into whatever spellwork or ritual you desire to preform!
After your spellwork, its time for Cakes and Ale. I like to make little spirit cakes and have some red wine after a ritual. Expelling all of that energy from your body is draining, and you should take your time to enjoy this part of the ritual. Set a cake and some wine aside for the entities who have lent you their energy as thanks. Cakes can be anything, from saltine crackers to cupcakes. Ale can be water. Anything that works for you is ok. For my cakes, i bake a shortbread and mix whatever ingredients i want into the dough. This way, I can craft them with the intent for whatever ritual i may be doing.
ONCE YOU FINISH YOUR WORK SAY GOODBYE TO THE ELEMENTS AND THANK THEM FOR THE POWER THEY BROUGHT. ALWAYS SAY GOODBYE AND THANK ANY DEITIES CALLED ON.
HERE IS HOW I DO IT:
-Farewell to Goddess. ex. “I thank you, Gaia, for gracing me with your glory. Farewell and Merry met.”
-Farewell to Quarters (Counterclockwise).
“My thanks to the element of Water, Your compassion was a gift. Farewell & Blessed be.” Now cover your dish of water or pour it out, Physically say goodbye as well.
“My thanks to the element of Fire, Your fierceness was a gift. Farewell & Blessed be.” Douse your candle.
“My thanks to the element of Air, Your wisdom was a gift. Farewell & Blessed be.” Douse incense/flip fan/turn over feather.
“My thanks to the element of Earth, Your protection was a gift. Farewell & Blessed be.” Cover earth with a cloth, or return it to ground.
I like to walk the circle the opposite way of its casting three times, and voila!
Keep in mind that this is just my method! There are many methods and this is just one of them.
I hope this is helpful to you!
-Love and light, @lapiscat
There’s so much to learn, and don’t get me wrong it’s all a little overwhelming but I know that with time I’ll be able to find myself on the right path. ✨
