He sat back, blinking at her as if taken aback by her answer, mouth open; aghast. “I take offense, madame! Do you truly think I cast about my affections, willy-nilly to any passerby?” Of course, he wasn’t really upset, only teasing. He and the barmaid were always like that, a playful jest here, a friendly taunt there. Jack was at ease around Meg, in a not so very different way than he was with Gibbs. They were people that held a high position of trust in his heart, people he thought very highly of. People who had seen the best, and indeed, the worst of him.
