Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Naruto (Anime & Manga) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Hyuuga Hinata/Uchiha Sasuke Characters: Hyuuga Hiashi, Uchiha Sasuke, Hyuuga Hinata, Hyuuga Hanabi Additional Tags: Alternate Universe Summary:
Hiashi sat alone in the Hyūga clan dojo, surrounded by incense and memories. Haunted by the loss of his brother Hizashi, his nephew Neji, and his distant past with Mikoto Uchiha, Hiashi reflected on the weight of tradition and the cost it demanded. The elders had decreed that one of his daughters—Hinata or Hanabi—must be branded to preserve the clan’s hierarchy. Hinata’s gentleness was seen as weakness, while Hanabi’s precision made her the favored heir. But Hiashi saw something deeper: resilience in Hinata, and the same oppressive cycle that once took Hizashi and Neji threatening to repeat. Watching Hinata and Sasuke share a quiet, understanding moment in the garden, he saw echoes of what might have been with Mikoto, and hope for a kinder future. Would he choose compassion over legacy? Would he choose breaking the cycle? Would he offer Hinata and Hanabi a future free from chains? (Slight hints of SasuHina)

head canon where hiashi and fugaku were rivals, especially IN LOVE! WAIT-----
Hiashi sat alone in the stillness of his private dojo, incense burning low on the cedar tray before him, the smoke curling in long, deliberate ribbons toward the ceiling. There was a silence that only grief knew how to fill, slow and deliberate, like water shaping stone. The war had ended, but peace had a strange way of unraveling the armor men wore too long. With Hizashi gone, and now Neji too, there was no one left to remind Hiashi of the past but memory itself.
He stared ahead, unblinking. But in his mind, the dojo dissolved into fragments of another time.
The courtyard had once been filled with the laughter of two boys, himself and Hizashi, indistinguishable in their youth except for a half-breath of seniority. They’d been close then. Twins in everything but fate. And yet fate did what it does best: it divided.
Hiashi remembered the day his father sat them down.
“You are the elder,” his father had said, his voice as cold as polished stone. “You will lead the clan. Hizashi will protect it.”
That was the moment it began, the split that would echo for generations. Hizashi’s smile had faded, just a little. Not in resentment, but in acceptance. The bird cage seal came soon after. Hizashi never cried. But Hiashi had heard the sharp breath he took when it was done, the one he thought no one noticed.
Then Mikoto’s face appeared in the back of his thoughts like a spring blossom preserved in ice. She had been... gentle. Curious. They had spoken at clan meetings, shared tea at a garden gathering their fathers had arranged. Not quite courtship, not quite friendship. But something had bloomed between them, soft and unnamed.
She once laughed at one of his awkward attempts at humor, hand to her lips, eyes crinkled with warmth. Hiashi had remembered that laugh through many cold winters. He remembered too how his father spoke of Mikoto fondly, how such a union would strengthen both clans.
But then came Fugaku.
The boy was steel even as a teen, his gaze sharp, his ambitions clearer than Hiashi had ever voiced. Mikoto began appearing beside him more often, and whatever had bloomed quietly between her and Hiashi withered with even quieter dignity. There was no confrontation. Only silence. The kind that two proud clansmen understood all too well.
After that, Hiashi turned inward. He chose the clan, buried himself in the endless traditions his father held sacred.
Time accelerated. The Uchihas welcomed their firstborn, Hiashi felt something twist in his chest. Not envy. Not exactly. Just the sharp reminder that he had not chosen everything in his life.
Then Hiashi met his wife, a calm and soft-spoken woman who understood the expectations laid upon her. They married. There was no spark, but there was peace.
Then came the letter from Hizashi: “I am a father.” Hiashi had not responded, not in words. He had congratulated him with a formal gift. The kind that said everything and nothing. Neji was born into the branch family like his father before him. A fate Hiashi never questioned.
Then the second Uchiha son was born. Fugaku’s pride had been visible even from across the compound during public ceremonies. Hiashi had watched from behind the veil of Hyuga decorum, his expression unreadable. Hiashi and his wife was in peace, and in that peace, Hinata was born.
Years passed. Hinata grew, too quiet, too gentle. “Like her mother,” people said. Hiashi saw weakness. Or perhaps he feared it.
Then, Hanabi was born. But his wife… did not make it through the night. Hiashi did not grieve. He did not have the time.
Then came the massacre. He had heard the news late at night. The Uchiha were gone. Mikoto was gone.
He dismissed the messenger, dismissed the words, dismissed the ache. But that night, for the first time in years, he had locked his chambers from within. And wept, alone, into his sleeves—no eyes to judge him, no duty to interrupt.
Mikoto. The clan. All gone in silence, just as his own heart had gone silent so many years before.

Because sometimes, you don’t get the love you wanted. But you get the one you needed—fleeting, bittersweet, a breath between wars.
