"No  offense,  but  since  when  do  you  give  me  orders?"  He  snaps  at  him.  It  was  the  fact  that  they  had  requested  him  only,  that  was  difficult.  And  yet...  If  he  told  Eito  that,  it  would  likely  make  him  even  more  inclined  to  come.

Takumi  wasn't  stupid,  he  knew  that  the  humans  likely  didn't  have  any  good  plans  for  him.  This  was  probably  a  trap.  But  that  didn't  mean  he  should  be  too  scared  to  see  it  through.  He  could  fight  well  enough  on  his  own.

"I  know  it's  risky,  but  I  can  handle  myself."

"Since  now.  I  refuse  to  stand  by  while  you  march  to  your  death."  He  knew  that  Takumi  was  strong  enough  to  handle  himself.  He  was  stronger  than  anyone  else  within  the  army,  even  stronger  than  himself.  And  yet  Eito  knew  that  even  Takumi  had  his  limits.

Even  if  Takumi  wouldn't  allow  him  to  come  along,  he  would  still  tail  him  in  secret.  There  was  no  getting  away  from  Eito  either  way.  Why  even  try  to  deny  him  at  this  point?  Stupid  ugly  Takumi.  Learn  to  take  a  hint!

"You  won't  last  out  there  by  yourself,  and  you  know  it.  Not  for  very  long."

Takumi  briefly  stirs  when  Eito  slips  away.  The  sudden  chill  as  the  body  heat  from  the  other  faded  made  him  wrap  his  arms  around  himself.  His  chest  and  thighs  pulsed  with  pain.  Tears  welled  up  in  his  eyes,  not  from  emotion  but  from  how  badly  it  burned.  Eito  had  left.  He  didn't  expect  him  to.

It  made  him  feel...  Something.  A  strange  tug  on  his  heart  he  didn't  really  want  to  understand.  He  always  slept  alone  after  reward  time.  Usually  after  showering  until  his  skin  was  red  and  peeling  off  or  something  similar.  This  time,  he  had  felt  content  to  sleep.  After  all...  It  hadn't  been  a  reward.  It  had  been  a  special  task.  And  Eito  had  left.  How...  Funny.  How...  pathetic.  He  felt  cold,  aside  from  the  burning  of  the  fresh  cuts.

He  drifted  off  for  what  felt  like  a  brief  moment  before  he,  yet  again,  stirred.  Warmth  spread  over  him,  blue  eyes  flutter  open  to  see  Eito  had  returned.  He  had  no  idea  how  long  he  had  been  gone.  The  warmth  felt  so  good  on  his  wounds.

Takumi  absently  moved  closer,  pressing  his  chest  against  him  and  moving  his  legs  to  tangle  with  his  for  extra  warmth  against  the  brutal  cuts  on  his  thighs.  And  he  fell  back  to  sleep  like  that.

He  didn't  open  his  eyes  again  until  the  sun  was  starting  to  pain  the  room  orange.  He  didn't  know  if  it  was  rising  or  setting.  But  he  was  still  clinging  to  Eito.

"Mm..."  It  hurts  it  hurts  it  hurts.  He  groans.  "Aotsuki...  How  long  have  I....?"  He  feels  so  empty.  It's  perfect.

For  once,  he  wasn't  keeping  track  of  the  time.  It  had  been  lost  completely  as  he  gazed  at  the  man  before  him.  They  lay  entangled,  with  little  to  no  distance  between  them  and  Eito  felt  so  warm.  He  could  go  on  and  on  in  his  mind  about  how  he  had  never  felt  such  closeness  before,  but  that  would  be  redundant.  He'll  just  have  to  settle  with  not  thinking  for  once.  But  how  was  he  to  do  that?  Emptying  his  mind,  ignoring  his  racing  thoughts  was  near  impossible.

It  all  came  to  an  end  when  Takumi  stirred  in  his  sleep  once  more.  The  Deity  groans,  and  Eito  immediately  responds  by  hugging  him  closer.  Poor  thing  must  still  be  aching  so  much.  The  cuts  on  his  torso  and  thighs  were  still  fresh,  after  all.  The  familiarity  is  gone.  He  listened  as  Takumi  spoke—  a  murmur,  calling  him  by  his  surname  and  asking  how  long  he's  been  asleep.  it  made  Eito's  heart  sink  a  little,  but  he  supposed  he  should  have  expected  this.

It  was  fine.  It  didn't  bother  him  in  the  slightest.

"At  most,  the  entire  afternoon,  and  some  of  the  evening,  too."  Eito  gently  ran  his  fingers  through  soft  red  locks.  "Shall  I  get  up?  I  can  get  you  some  water  if  you're  thirsty.  After  all,  you  must  be  pretty  dehydrated."

“…..”  Never mind.  He  doesn't  want  to  anymore.  Not  if  she's  going  to  be  sick  and  twisted  and  actually  enjoy  it.  Although  it  would  be  beneficial.  He  could  really  use  the  boost  from  absorbing  her  Cryptoglobin.  But  this  just  wasn't  worth  it.  He'd  loved  seeing  the  ugly  expressions  of his  victims  as  he  drained  the  life  from  them.  Darumi  would  just  have  far  too  much  fun  and  that  ruined  it  for  him.

Her  heart  skips  a  beat.  Eito  pulls  her  into  an  embrace.  She  meekly  wraps  her  arms  around  him,  burying  her  face  into  his  chest.  The  tears  wouldn't  stop  and  Nozomi  sobbed  against  him.  She  had  lost  so  many  friends  already.  She  had  never  met  Darumi,  but  she  was  still  one  of  them.  Kyoshika  and  Kurara  were  dead.  Eva,  even  if  she  never  actually  wanted  to  join  them,  had  also  been  killed.  And  now  Eito  was  facing  death.

It  was  a  death  sentence.  There  was  no  mercy  in  it.  Takumi  spared  Eito  and  for  what?  To  let  him  walk  away  like  this?  She  knew  that  Takumi  didn't  mean  for  him  to  be  cast  out.  And  yet...  Sirei  is  the  one  that  made  the  call.  Eito  agreed,  and  Nozomi  could  only  assume  why.  Perhaps  it  was  painted  by  her  own  history...  But  she  could  imagine.

"You  won't  be  ignored.  I'll  stay  with  you."  She  promised  with  a  weak  voice.  "You  are  one  of  us,  Aotsuki-kun.  Even  if  you  aren't  on  the  front  lines.  Please..."  She  turns  her  head,  pressing  her  ear  against  his  chest.  Eito  was  warm.  His  heart  was  beating.  He  was  alive.  He  may  have  been  created  in  a  lab.  But  he  was  a  living  thing.  A  person  with  thoughts  and  feelings.  And  he  was  hurting.  An  entire  life  with  no  one  wanting  to  know  him?

Maybe  she  could  relate.  After  all...  She  had  spent  too  much  time  at  the  hospital  to  be  involved  with  kids  her  age.  She  had  been  too  sick  from  the  tests.  Too  entwined  with  the  secret  research.  Called  weird  for  liking  old  movies  and  books.  Being  fixated  on  the  'Earth'  she  thought  they  could  return  to.

None  of  it  was  real.  It  was  all  leading  to  this.  The  invasion  of  another  planet  and  genocide  of  its  people.  But  she  couldn't  even  feel  bad  for  herself.  Not  when  they  had  been  so  cruelly  manipulated.

"I  won't  let  you....  Please,  don't  go.  Don't  die.  I  want  you  to  find  happiness.  I  want  you  to  be  in  my  future.  I  know  you...  You  don't  deserve  this.  Just  because  you  ran?  That's  not  fair...!  I'll  talk  to  Sirei.  I'll  take  to  Sumino-kun...!  Just...  please...."

If  he  tried  to  leave  without  her,  she'd  try  to  follow.  She  just...  can't  stomach  anyone  else  dying.  Not  Eito.  Not  any  of  them.  He  was  totally  helpless  like  this.  And  he  was...  He  was  not  who  she  thought  he  was.  Would  someone  that  wanted  to  hurt  her  treat  her  like  this?

Her  pleading  just  made  things  harder.  Eito  felt  a  heavy  weight  and  his  chest  felt  tight.  She  felt  disgusting  in  his  arms,  the  contact  surely  staining  his  clothes  and  her  scent  would  be  all  over  him-  not  that  he  could  smell  right  now.  Then  again,  that  was  all  fake  too,  wasn't  it?  Delusions  created  by  his  condition  to  trick  him.  It  was  like  a  curse  that  he  was  forced  to  live  with.

Nozomi  was  breaking  him  down,  his  defensive  walls  crumbling  little  by  little  until  there  was  nothing  left  but  the  two  of  them.  The  entrance  hall  suddenly  felt  so  small  and  he  couldn't  help  but  tighten  his  hold  on  her  in  a  desperate  attempt  to  find  comfort.

He  didn't  realize  until  just  now,  but  he  was  crying  too.

"Can  I  really  do  that?"  Finding  happiness  was  something  he  never  thought  would  be  in  the  cards  for  him.  To  hear  her  say  that  she  wanted  him  in  her  future  felt  like  she'd  stabbed  him  and  twisted  the  knife.  How  was  he  supposed  to  stand  his  ground  and  turn  her  down  now?  What  was  he  to  do?  "Is  that  really  an  option  for  me?  To  think  you  would  want  to  stay  by  my  side  when..  I  hated  you  so  much."

Perhaps  it  was  jealousy,  alongside  the  already  preexisting  hatred  he  had  for  her  simply  because  she's  human.  Horrible  jealous  that  reared  it's  ugly  head  whenever  Takumi  looked  at  her.  He'd  only  seen  it  a  handful  of  times,  but  he  knew  that  she  was  someone  special  to  Takumi.

Eito  didn't  realize  until  just  now  that  he  wanted  Takumi  to  look  at  him  that  way.

"You  deserve  a  better  friend  than  me.  I'm  sorry..  I'm  so  sorry.  I.."

He  can't  leave  now,  can  he?  What  were  they  going  to  do?  If  things  go  south,  and  Eito  had  to  go  anyway,  would  Nozomi  follow?

"...I'll  stay.  I  want  more  than  anything  to  believe  you."

It  was  the  same  thing.  Waiting  to  see  how  it  turned  out?  If  the  attack  went  off  on  day  100,  Eito  would  be  among  the  countless  killed  flames.  Nozomi  had  grown  up  believing  in  humanity.  Her  mother  had  died  trying  to  save  it.  It  had  all  been  leading  up  to  this.  An  ugly  reality.  The  tests  on  her  failed  and  the  Special  Defense  Unit  was  created.  Children  created  to  fight  and  die  for  humanity.  False  lives.  False  existences.  But  they  were  alive.  Real.  They  were  her  best  friends  and  more  important  to  her  than  humanity  now.  Takumi  and  the  others  had  resolved  themselves  to  accept  their  fate  and  walk  the  path  on  death.  The  path  of  hell  that  humanity  had  crafted  for  them.  Nozomi  knew  there  were  good  people  that  deserved  to  live  and  be  happy.  And  yet...  wasn't  that  also  true  for  the  people  here?

The  choice  was  made  before  she  was  ever  born.  Was  there  ever  a  chance  for  things  to  end  differently?  For  her?  For  the  others?  For  Eito?  He  wipes  away  her  tears  delicately.  And  she  knew...  Eito  didn't  want  to  hurt  them  anymore.

This  is  who  he  is.  Who  he  should  have  been.  Just  another  lonely  reject  like  her.  If  it  wasn't  for  his  condition,  the  glitch  that  ruined  his  perception  of  reality,  would  he  be  a  kind  boy?  Someone  reliable?  There  was  no  way  to  know.  And  as  things  stood  now,  Nozomi  would  never  see  Eito  in  a  different  light.  Which  is  why  she  couldn't  let  him  walk  away.

But  was  that  fair?  If  this  is  what  he  wanted...  Is  it  fair  to  deny  him?  What  right  does  she  have  to  take  away  his  choice?  Hasn't  humanity  taken  enough  from  him?

And  yet...  What  Eito  really  wanted  was  to  be  with  them,  wasn't  it?

"I'm  so  sorry,  Aotsuki-kun."  She  had  devoted  herself  to  the  cause,  but  now  she  devoted  herself  to  the  people  in  the  unit.  Eito  came  to  fight  with  her  too,  just  like  the  others,  when  they  were  all  too  stunned  by  the  truth.  When  she  tried  to  protect  them.  That  is  what  they  did.  They  protected  each  other.  And  Eito  fought  too.

"I  want  to  be  friends  with  you.  I  can't  let  you  leave  and  die  out  there  alone.  Not  before  I  get  to  know  you.  I  know  it's  selfish...  But...  I  want  to  protect  you.  I  could  never  forgive  myself  if  you  left.  If  the  others  need  me,  they'll  have  to  accept  you  staying  here  for  now  or...  Forgive  me  for  leaving  with  you  for  awhile."

"Ah..."

What  a  stubborn  girl.  She  refused  to  listen  to  reason,  but  Eito  could  say  the  very  same  about  himself.  That  he  was  stubborn,  and  refused  to  listen.  That  he  took  things  to  extremes  and  only  thought  of  what  he  believed  was  right.  He  couldn't  fault  or  blame  Nozomi,  he  didn't  have  the  heart  to.  Eito  knew  deep  down,  that  what  he  truly  wanted  was  to  stay  with  everyone.  He's  sure  Nozomi  knows  it,  too.  Why  else  would  she  be  so  desperate  to  keep  him  here,  or  stay  by  his  side?

Maybe  like  him,  Nozomi  felt  like  she  needed  to  atone.  Perhaps  she  felt  an  overwhelming  guilt  for  what  humanity  had  done  to  himself  and  the  others,  or  even  for  just  being  human  entirely.  She  wholeheartedly  believed  in  the  cause,  took  heavy  risks  to  be  here,  and  wanted  to  honor  her  mother's  work  all  for  it  to  be  for  nothing  but  a  falsehood  created  for  genocide.  Nozomi  was  just  as  much  of  a  joke  as  he  was.

Of  course,  he  wouldn't  say  that  to  her  outright.  Even  under  the  possibility  that  she  might  agree,  Eito  didn't  want  to  be  that  person.  He's  had  enough  of  that  for  one  lifetime.  He  couldn't  stomach  the  idea  of  saying  that  aloud  when  she's  saying  that  she  wants  to  be  his  friend.

He  takes  a  deep  breath  and  braces  himself  for  what  he's  about  to  do  next.  Eito  pulls  her  closer,  and  wraps  his  arms  around  her  in  a  tight  embrace.  If  only  he  had  been  like  the  others.  What  would  he  have  been  like?  What  would  this  feel  like?  Would  Nozomi  smell  nice?  Is  her  voice  sweet,  and  gentle?  Would  he  find  her  beautiful  even  when  she  cried?  Would  he  think  all  of  these  things  and  more  about  Takumi,  too?

“I  want  to  be  your  friend,  too.  I  want  to  protect  you.  I  want  to  stay  here,  and  be  with  all  of  you.  I  don't  believe  you're  being  selfish,  but  I  do  believe  that  you're  being  stubborn.  Even  just  hearing  that  you  want  to  get  to  know  me  is  more  than  enough.  No  one  has  ever  said  those  words  to  me  before."

It  meant  more  to  Eito  than  Nozomi  could  ever  realize.  But  he  had  to  remain  firm. 

“But  you  can't  come  with  me,  and  I  can't  stay  here  with  you,  either.  I'm  no  longer  a  member  of  the  Special  Defense  Unit.  Even  if  I  stayed,  I'd  be  confined  to  my  cage  and  ignored  entirely."

Touch  is  something  that  Takumi  had  grown  used  to.  The  humiliation.  The  feeling  of  pins  and  needles  on  his  skin.  How  it  burned  him.  Closeness  and  touch  had  changed  for  him  since  he  became  God.  But  he  could  stomach  it.

Eito  looked  so  weak,  bloody  in  his  arms.  The  memory  of  his  Priest  going  cold  in  his  arms  came  back  to  him.  Takumi  hadn't  cried.  He  didn't  have  the  capacity  to.  But  he  felt  like  something  had  been  ripped  away  from  him.  It  had  hurt.  And  he  had  been  angry.  At  Eito.  At  the  people  that  killed  him.  Maybe  even  at  himself.  Eito  had  accepted  his  place  as  a  martyr.  A  saint  that  would  forever  be  remembered  for  his  service  to  the  cause.

"I'm  here.  It's  me."  He  replies,  pushing  some  of  Eito's  hair  out  of  his  face.  A  thumb  traces  his  cheek,  under  his  dark  frames.  He  wasn't  stupid.  His  glasses  being  different  were  an  indication  of  something  in  this  timeline.  Just  a  hunch,  but...  Takumi  slowly  removes  them  to  look  at  his  face.  Under  them  was  nothing.  No  eyes  at  all.  Eito  or  someone  must  have  removed  them.  Like  declawing  a  cat.

How  disgusting.

Eito  couldn't  see  him...  Would  the  drug  work  on  him?  Did  he  want  it  to?  Regardless,  Takumi  knows  Eito  needs  comfort  right  now.  And  medical  treatment.  Only  one  of  which  he  could  provide.  He  puts  the  glasses  back  on  him  carefully.

"You're  all  alone,  aren't  you?  And  blind.  How  terrible."  He  feels  empty.  And  yet,  there  is  something  he  can't  explain  gripping  his  heart.  Pity,  maybe.  Affection,  perhaps?  Eito  was  one  of  his  people  now.  So  he  would  protect  him  no  matter  what.

"I  came  for  you  because  you  deserve  to  be  happy,  Aotsuki.  I'll  protect  you.  I'm  taking  you  home  so  your  wounds  can  be  treated."  He  forces  a  smile  the  other  can't  see.

"I  won't  lose  you  again.  You're  safe."  A  small  pause.  "Can  you  walk?  Or  should  I  carry  you?"

How  disgusting.  He  feels  a  tendril  that  he  assumed  was  Takumi's  thumb  tracing  his  cheek.  It  felt  slimy,  and  dirty.  He  makes  a  little  face  showing  his  disgust  that  only  gets  worse  when  Takumi  removed  his  glasses.  Eito  tries  to  reach  up  in  protest,  but  he  was  too  slow.  Now  his  glasses  are  going  to  feel  gross  on  his  face  until  he  gives  them  a  proper  cleaning.

Confusion  soon  takes  over  at  Takumi's  words.  Why  was  he  acting  as  if  he  didn't  know  that  he  was  blind  before?  As  if  he  wasn't  there  when  Eito  had  showed  everyone  that  he'd  removed  his  eyes-  as  if  he  wasn't  there  when  he  crushed  them  beneath  his  foot.

"...What?"

He  couldn't  get  another  word  in  as  Takumi  kept  talking.  Despite  his  voice  being  like  nails  on  a  chalkboard,  Eito  listened  carefully  and  was  immediately  overwhelmed.  It  felt  like  a  dream.  Surely,  he  had  just  died  and-  no.  If  he  had  died,  he  would  be  given  no  such  peace  in  the  afterlife.  It  wasn't  in  the  cards  for  someone  like  him.  So  then,  why?  The  simple  reasoning  that  he  deserved  to  be  happy  wasn't  enough.

"I'm  sorry.  I  don't  think  I  can  walk,  as  much  as  I  want  to.  Having  your  hands  on  me  is  already  awful  enough...  now  I  have  to  deal  with  you  carrying  me,  too."

Despite  this,  Eito  had  a  wobbly  smile  on  his  face.  Somewhere  deep  down,  underneath  all  of  his  shame  and  self  hatred,  he  wanted  this  and  was  happy  for  it.
