🍂Apple Walnut Cake - Mabon🍂
Hello, my greenies! I have a cake that I love to bake for Mabon. It is my grandmothers recipe, but I’ve added some of my witchy goodness and my own touches in it too. I’m so excited for this and have gotten a new dress for this holiday too! I hope you all have a great time and if you make this, don’t hesitate to tell me!
Ingredients
2 cups of flour
½ cup of buttermilk
1 cup of brown sugar
½ cup of sugar
½ stick of butter, softened
1 tsp baking soda
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
around 1 tbsp on cinnamon (2 ½ tbsps = 1 tbsp)
2 medium apples (peeled & diced) - NOT minced or shredded!
½ cup of chopped walnuts
Crisco
Directions
Preheat the oven for 350°F
Mix flour and baking soda in a separate bowl.
Mix milk, brown sugar, eggs, butter, and half the cinnamon together.
Then, sift the dry ingredients into the wet ones, put in vanilla, and mix in both the apples and walnuts.
Cover a 9 inch pan in crisco and put mix into it.
In a separate bowl, mix sugar and cinnamon. Blanket the top with the cinnamon sugar mix.
Bake for about 40-45 minutes.
After I place it in the oven, I say a little chant and prayer.
“Oh earth and wind and water, I am but your body. Heal and protect me from harm. Give my family, my friends, and myself your gifts and your strength.”
I also play my Mabon playlist (lol) while I bake and do some ritual dancing. It’s a really fun time and once the cake is done, I usually pair it with a cider. It might smell good, but definitely let it cool, at least slightly.
If you are planning to serve at a party, I think it would be cute to make a little flower out of apple slices and place in the middle. This is just my thoughts though!
I really hope you all like it and have a happy Mabon!
- Kenzie
*sometimes I decide to roast the walnuts for about 1 minute in a pan before I mix them in, this is just a little extra thing I do if I have time/want to do that*

breaking down barriers: a love spell for healthy communication
sometimes it feels like we’re stuck in a rut in our relationships, like there’s something that needs saying but no one is saying it. that’s where this spell comes in handy! the intention behind this spell is to break down the barriers that are keeping open and honest communication from happening between two people in a relationship and (hopefully) cause them to become closer. though it was designed specifically for romantic love, this spell can also be used for friendships, family ties, or other forms of platonic love. DO NOT cast this spell if you aren’t prepared for what might come to light as a result!
MATERIALS:
a large yellow candle
a pink candle
a piece of thread/string/etc
an object/picture that represents you
an object/picture that represents the other person
scissors
DIRECTIONS:
take your candles and set them about 8″ apart in the middle of your altar (or whatever magic-working space you use). tie one end of the thread/string/whatever you’re using around each candle, about halfway down. this will act as your “barrier”. (HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT IT WILL LOOK LIKE, EXCUSE MY SHITTY WEB DRAWING)
place the thing that symbolizes you on one side of the “barrier” and the thing that represents your loved one on the other side.
light the each candle (the yellow then the pink) and, as they begin to melt down, imagine any barriers that are keeping you from expressing your feelings to the other melting down as well. visualize ideas, feelings, and thoughts flowing freely and lovingly between you and any obstacles becoming burned away.
once the candles burn down to the place where the thread is tied, cut the thread. the barriers between you are now broken, and you will find it much easier to communicate openly with one another.
TIP: if you have any incense lying around, burn it while you are working this spell to give it an extra “boost” since air is an element that is strongly associated with communication (due to the fact that it carries things from one place to another). vanilla, jasmine, and rose are a few that i would recommend to focus on the ~love~ aspect of this spell

Urtica Dioica
Stinging Nettle
Stinging nettle, or Urtica Dioica, is a perennial flowering plant that has been used medicinally for ages, dating back as far as Ancient Greece. Today, it can be found all over the world, but its origins are in the colder regions of Europe and Asia. The plant usually grows between two to four feet high and blooms from June to September. It grows best in nitrogen-rich soil, has heart-shaped leaves, and produces yellow or pink flowers.
In ancient medieval medicine, Nettle was used for treating and curing issues like hay fever, bone-related issues, used as a diuretic as well as to treat joint pain and muscle pain. Today, it is used to treat urinary tract infections, muscle and joint sprains, insect bites as well as skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis and acne. Also used as illness preventative in boosting the immune system, oxygenating blood and supplying higher red blood cell volume which helps with anemia and overall wellness and energy.
Medicinal uses include:
Improves glycemic control in type 2 diabetics and helps stimulate insulin secretion
The styptic property of stinging nettle tea can reduce excessive bleeding during menstruation. Its analgesic nature also aids in easing menstrual pain and cramps
Powerful sexual stimulant. Lignans, found in stinging nettle, combine with the sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) to promote testosterone levels in men.
Detox drink due to its diuretic properties and its ability to flush out toxins from the body. Drinking a cup of nettle tea can increase nutrients and optimize metabolism, thus helping in weight loss.
Nettle herbal extracts have anticancer agents and the parts of the plant have been used to treat benign and malignant tumors.
Soothe the pain of a pulled muscle, a sore back, a headache, or any bump or bruise
Nettle has long been associated with protection. Just try to mindlessly grab a fistful of nettle – and ouch! She teaches you boundaries. The plant has a powerful innate protective mechanism to keep invaders away. The sting (caused by formic acid) wakes you up, slows you down, to approach and harvest mindfully.
Hang bundles of nettle around your home, from your clothing, or strewn in your car for protection. Gather bundles of nettle to use in ritual or spellwork to create boundaries, activate and add fuel to starting something new. The energies of the planet mars guides this herb.
Uses:
Juice nettles: If you have the kind of juicer that can juice wheatgrass, then juice nettles. I store the juice in ice cube trays. Then I add a cube to water when it’s not nettle season (summer & winter) when I crave the deep green to sink into my cells – when I’m exhausted, drained, or anemic.
Infusion with the dried herb – dry your own nettles (or you can buy them from quality herb shops) and prepare a medicinal infusion. Many herbalists view teas as basically flavoured beverages and find them not very medicinal (though they can be slightly depending on the quality of the herbs) but an infusion is a very strong therapeutic brew. Prepare a nettle infusion by weighing out 25g of dried nettle and place the herb in 500ml of boiled water. Steep for 1 hour or even over night. Strain and enjoy your vitamin – mineral drink!
Tincture – You can make your own nettle tincture by blending the fresh leaves or ripening seeds with 95% alcohol at a 1:5 ratio. However, my preference is to use nettle as explained above – as food or water extracts (infusions).
Syrup – There are countless recipes for Iron Syrups out there that include nettle as a primary ingredient. Check out this recipe here. A basic syrup is essentially a strong infusion or decoction of a herb, with a sweetener added for flavour and preservation.
