i’m really excited for the next d&d game i’m going to run because i’ve levelled the fuck up and decided to have disabled characters! my current d&d character, carcosa, fits nebulously into “chronic illness” - they have garbage health and are pretty sickly - but i did it very, very vaguely, and it’s not well defined. it works for me, but i don’t really consider them representative of any real conditions

but for my next campaign i have two characters and i want to go more out there

the first, ro, is an elf rogue - he’s a dancer and nimble escapist, partly because he has hypermobility due to elher danlos syndrome. travelling long distance - which is often, because it’s dnd - he uses a walking stick. he can go short amounts of time without it (if he needs to sneak, if he’s not going far, if he’s doing a performance, etc). his companion is a goliath named thlayli, and she’s an upper limb amputee. she’s compensated for it over time, and now wields a halberd one-handed as efficiently as someone with two hands.

it’s really fun to make disability not only present in dungeons and dragons, but ... tie into their characters and stories? ro’s eds helps his work, and thlayli’s amputation makes her strength incredibly impressive.

i’m not really interested personally in game-ifying disability ( although i know some people who are, and that’s valid - i’ve seen people come up with really cool mechanics for rolling how a chronic illness will effect you that day! ) but my games are roleplay heavy so i love tying it into the existing mechanics
