Just because an ambulatory wheelchair user is not using their wheelchair at a certain moment doesn't make them able bodied. I often feel like people seem to forget that. It doesn't even mean that they are in any less pain/discomfort than they would be in otherwise.
After years of being concerned that I was going to “end up” in a wheelchair because of my ongoing chronic health issues … I just fucking bought one.
And you know what? I actually did a shopping trip without getting dizzy and forgetting things or feeling like I was going to collapse by the time I got to the checkout. I was actually pretty speedy, too (I may need to learn not to be a total menace in the aisles … it’s just fun not to be limping along for once).
I still need to figure out this whole “where to put the grocery items” thing because my lap sure ain’t it, but it made the whole trip so much easier even with that unknown.
this exactly !! i recently bought my first wheelchair and ive been on a few outings with it now, and after being stuck in my house in the worst flare up of my life so far for a little under a month, ive been able to go out independently !! ive been in far less fatigue and pain and far less dizzy using my chair than ive felt after going out in YEARS now. if you're debating a mobility aid and think it might help even slightly - take the leap !! (though not literally)
do any other disabled folks wonder if they're somehow faking their symptoms even though there's practically no way for their symptoms to be faked???

Shoutout to ambulatory wheelchair users who can walk a long way, whether aided or unaided. To people who can hike up a mountain one day, but another day can’t even get out of bed; you still deserve to use a wheelchair, you are not faking your disability. When you have a fluctuating disability, it’s hard to feel like your needs are important, but they are.
