Project Hail Mary + Particle Man by They Might Be Giants
Happy lap loaf. ❤️ I love that someone felt the need to capture this moment. Photo from my collection, no date/info.
I just wanted to draw them. Some "First" Meetings and a part that didn't end up animated. Dialogue is more from the books but not word for word (obviously). These were supposed to just be sketches but I ended up cleaning them up.
Last night I dreamed that Tumblr used AI to implement a mandatory feature that automatically placed illustrative emojis before all important nouns in posts, like the dialogue in Super Mario Odyssey, except there was something wrong with the AI and it gradually started identifying every noun as "gun".
does anyone else have parents who suck in objectively funny ways
drawing it made me realize this one might be a unique experience
im going through some bullshit someones homestuck fankid would experience
so the tuna meltdown is november 2016 and tampa asg is january 2017 so meet-cute to break-up for shane and rose was like, MAYBE six weeks. max. and shane went from hightailing it with cum drying on his skin to "I gotta lock this guy down" in two months. i know we like to assume that ilya is jealous of rose but actually i think he would be sending her an outrageously extravagant flower arrangement for every birthday and a bottle of champagne every year on the anniversary of her telling shane that he's gay
i think everyone in the whole world forgot that mystery doesn’t have to equal crime
sometimes it’s just like. what happent ?

They wear suits, but they don't even know basic etiquette.

Another storytelling rule I think people should remember is the law of diminishing returns. If you keep on ramping up the stakes higher and higher and higher, after a point it gets to where the audience can’t really care anymore.
I think this is also connected to what I have no idea whether there's a word for it but you know how in The Lord of the Rings (the books) there are all those moments when no action happens and they're basically resting somewhere nice, the hobbits are enjoying some food and banter, or the narration stops to admire the scenery? Yeah, those are there for contrast, to make the action count, and remind you why you should care for the characters and their fighting and questing to save the world. You don't get the saving-the-world high stakes of that story just from bigger and bigger battles.
This seems related to the previous point:
I told Miyazaki I love the "gratuitous motion" in his films; instead of every movement being dictated by the story, sometimes people will just sit for a moment, or they will sigh, or look in a running stream, or do something extra, not to advance the story but only to give the sense of time and place and who they are. "We have a word for that in Japanese," he said, "It's called ma. Emptiness. It's there intentionally." Is that like the "pillow words" that separate phrases in Japanese poetry? "I don't think it's like the "pillow word." He clapped his hands three or four times. "The time in between my clapping is ma. If you just have non-stop action with no breathing space at all, it's just busyness, but if you take a moment, then the tension building in the film can grow into a wider dimension. If you just have constant tension at 80 degrees all the time you just get numb.”
2002 interview between Roger Ebert and Hayao Miyazaki
Apparently some people still need to hear this so: using an 'ai checker' is still using ai. If you are feeding someone's fic to one of these checkers, you will still not be sure their fic is ai because they are not 100% accurate, but you can be 100% sure that you are using ai. For fic. Furthermore you are doing the work of an ai scraper for them. You are, personally, feeding the machine. There is no actual excuse for using an ai checker on fanfic as a hobby. YOU are the problem.
If you think a fic is ai, mute it and move on. That's it. That's all you do.
I'm one of the few people that genuinely LOVES working customer service (hotel receptionist here), like yes the occasional person is rude and entitled. But most of the time? People are kind, and funny, and will jump at the chance to share a bit of their lives with someone else.
The businessman that comes in every week who seemed grouchy at first now smiles and waves when I remember his name, and explains he's just finished a long drive, and he doesn't MEAN to come off as rude, he's just tired.
The mother and daughter who visit the hotel each summer and tell me they've been coming here for years, and each time they visit they go to the pier and save up their tickets for the big ticket items. One day they come through the doors with the biggest grins, the older lady in the wheelchair proudly waving a huge stuffed toy tiger she's "had her eye on for years".
The young man with his girlfriend who looks nervous as he approaches reception, and stumbles over his words, his hands shaking as he signs the paperwork to check in. I've spent the last two weeks on the phone with him organising this; we've set up the bedroom with balloons and petals and decorations, and he's going to propose as soon as they get to the room.
The woman who I've not seen before who asks if I'm local, and tells me she grew up here, and had recently found herself drawn back. We talk about the sounds of seagulls, and the metal clanging of masts down at the harbour, and how the sounds that fade into the background are the ones you miss most when you leave. She's writing a book and promises to send me a copy when she's done.
The regular who goes out of her way to buy us all the strangest biscuits she can find at the tourist shops. We try them together, pulling faces at the ones that just don't work.
The thirty something woman who immediately sees a kinship in me and whispers to me that she has been here before, but under a name she no longer uses, and we celebrate the freedom she feels.
The support group that comes in for coffee each week and sit together filling the foyer with laughter.
Every single person living their own wonderful complicated rich lives, and I get to be a part of that. How is that not beautiful?
