[ BET YOU THOUGHT YOU’D SEEN THE LAST OF ME ]
Cut Off One Head [morefirethanthesun]
howeveryclever:
Nathaniel doesn’t immediately leave the car once he’s killed the engine, wrapping his fingers tightly around the steering wheel as though that will help quell the aching tightness in his chest. He’s hunted mutants before, without SHIELD, and he had never once hesitated under his father’s steely commands. He’s even hunted mutants he’d known personally, for a short while, before they’d proved themselves to be too dangerous to live with the rest of humanity. Nathaniel doesn’t remember giving their capture any more attention than the ones he didn’t know, had no second thoughts about their imprisonment. But Anders… Anders was different.
Certainly they’d had more history than any of Nathaniel’s other familiar targets had, but it was more than that. They’d been comrades, fighting together on the same squad and sniping at each other over the commlinks while Justice grumbled at them to “cut the radio chatter.” Nathaniel wasn’t sure he’d have called them friends, but they’d been allies, and in some respects that was far more valuable. He had, of course, imagined there would be times when he’d have to hunt Anders down for trying to desert SHIELD or leaving his post to pet cats, but never for something like this. This was not a man he ever wanted to see for the last time through his crosshairs.
The sound of Sigrun loading her gun brought him back to reality, and he rubbed the bridge of his nose with his fingers before turning to face her. She anticipated the question that was on his tongue before he voiced it, speaking into the tense silence quietly but firmly.
“I’m gonna go in first. If he really is Hydra then he’s too dangerous for you to face head on. Get up high and find somewhere good. If I cant get him to come quietly, I’ll flush him out. Don’t forget he’s a regen. You’ll have to hit him pretty good if you want him to stay down.”
He gave her a curt nod, turning in his seat to pull his equipment out of the back. There was no denying her sound logic, and Nathaniel was grateful more than ever that it was Sigrun at his side dealing with this. She was tough enough to make the tough calls and follow through, wordlessly reminding Nathaniel of his duty to protect citizens above all else. Ally or not, if Anders was Hydra then he was a dangerous enemy and had to be eliminated. Moreover, if he had done what the reports said he had, then he had the deaths of multiple SHIELD agents on his hand. Nathaniel couldn’t afford any sentimentality.
Sigrun spared him a brief squeeze to his arm before she exited the car, moving cautiously towards the line of warehouses. “Hey Anders, you in there?” She called, and Nathaniel used her voice and her footsteps as cover for his exit out the vehicle. He’d have to make his way to the nearest fire escape and head up, moving as quickly as quietness allowed. Truthfully, he just hoped he could get something set up before Anders came blasting out of the nearest building. He wouldn’t be much good to them in a literal fire fight.
The silence was about to drive Anders insane - after the car engine had cut, he’d heard nothing. No footsteps, no movement. It was making him all the jumpier, waiting for someone to fling themselves from the shadows and sink a knife in his ribs or put a bullet in his head. Not that either would do much, but it’d be enough to stumble him long enough for an anti-regen countermeasure. And if these people were SHIELD (or worse, Hydra,) they’d likely have that technology. He’d never been afraid for his own life before, but he’d gotten a clearer picture of his mortality in recent days.
When he heard Sigrun’s voice call out through the warehouse, reverberating off of the walls, he winced. Of course they’d have sent his own team after him. Both SHIELD and Hydra would know he’d hesitate to strike them down if they turned on him. God, he hoped they weren’t with Hydra, because he didn’t think he could stomach the idea of killing poor Sigrun. Not that he was sure he could... she was a regen just like him, and he wasn’t sure if she had a limit that could be crossed before her magical enhancements would stop bringing her back. He didn’t want to find out.

howeveryclever:
The tension is thick in the air, and Nate is stupidly grateful for the literal hell they’ve just been through, if only because it means they’re both too tired to do anything but scowl at each other. Even if he wanted to take the Siren back into custody he most certainly doesn’t have the energy to do it now, nor would he order Maggie to try and take him out in the hunter’s stead. All he wants to do now is find a dark corner to lick his wounds and sort out the mess of new information and old, re-awakened feelings in head before it explodes. So long as Anders doesn’t intend to kill him when his back is turned he really doesn’t care what the Siren does.
Nate wipes his own face with more dignity than is arguably necessary, given that his glove is so dirty he smears more than he cleans, glowering at Anders’ outburst but choosing not to answer it with any actual words. He doesn’t need another punch to the face, thank you very much, and he’s not sure how much violence Maggie will tolerate before she bites one of them.
So he lets Anders speak, maintains eye contact when the Siren stares at him with the same ferocious intensity that he’d run down their Hyperion enemies. As much as his pride doesn’t like the idea of him letting a bounty go, Nate knows that there are some things more important than his pride, as much as it pains him to admit. Besides, he can’t in good conscience turn Anders over to Hyperion now, not after the way the Siren reacted to the facilities they’d been through. He’s not sure he could send anyone there, even if he had a vendetta against them.
Sighing softly, the bounty hunter shakes his head, wincing at the movement when it causes pain to flare up in several locations. “I have no intention of capturing you again. You are free to go wherever you wish. Though,” it takes more effort than he expected to pull himself to his feet, and he has to pause to regain his breath. “If you shoot at me first, you know I will shoot you back.”
It’s not exactly the answer Anders was looking for (even a simple “fuck Hyperion” would’ve been nice) but it’s good enough to placate him for now. Nathaniel isn’t rising in defense of Hyperion, and he’ll take his admission that he’s giving up on the bounty as a roundabout way of saying he’s got no plans on defending the company’s actions. He’s at least somewhat pleased to see that the bounty hunter isn’t entirely heartless. Or stupid. He’d have to kill him otherwise, and he’s not sure he’s got the energy in him to take on both an injured bounty hunter and his overprotective pet stalker. Not to mention he’d feel at least a little regret having to take him down, as much as he hates to admit it.
God, he really hates to admit it. The man broke your nose and tried to arrest you for money, for fuck’s sake. Damn him and his social nature; someone speaks two words to him and he’s suddenly aware of every moment he’s been alone and needed company. He’s not about to declare the man a friend anytime soon, though, but having another body nearby was doing wonders for his social starvation. He feels like he’s betraying himself with that thought alone, though, so he crushes it firmly under heel.
“I only shoot when I’m provoked,” he replies with a grimace, rubbing at the wound in his arm from being grazed by a bullet earlier. Being a Siren had its perks - when his powers weren’t hindered, his healing factor had a habit of keeping him alive in a firefight. The gash was already starting to scab. “And if I wanted revenge, I’d have taken it by now.”
His eyes flitted from Nate over to their outunner, weighing their options as he did so. At least the vehicle had stayed intact - they’d be out of luck otherwise.
“Let’s just get out of here. You can drop me off at the nearest settlement, and then...” he sighed. “And then you and I never have to see each other again, circumstances willing.”

❝ you’re smiling because you know i’m right. ❞
“I’m smiling because you’re adorable. But you’re also so very, adorably wrong.”
“No, I’m fairly sure I’m right. It won’t wound your pride too much to admit it, you know.”
"Every time i close my eyes, i keep seeing that thing."
“I suppose Wardens don’t have many peaceful dreams to look forward to, do we?”
“I wonder if it ever gets easier.”
‘science is neat. but i’m afraid it’s not very forgiving.’
“Preaching to the choir, my friend.” She undid her mechanical arm at the elbow and tossed it into his lap without a car. It was science that had taken it from her.“How long’s this gonna take this time?”
wiresdonttalk:
The residual energy that lingered in the limb made the fingers twitch and wiggle as he stared at it, almost as if it were trying to wave hello. “Ugh, and here I thought you were s’posed to be a genius.” She dropped into the chair across from him and propped her feet up quite rudely on his table. It was in jest, of course, but poking at his temper was always fun. “The responsiveness is delayed by about half a second. Not really conducive to actually getting any fucking work done, if you catch my drift. But I looked the damn thing over and nothing’s wrong, so… maybe ain’t nothing wrong with the mechanical bits of it.” She wiggled her stump, trying not to look worried. The last thing she needed was degenerative nerve damage. That was a death sentence for her career.
“I’m a medic, not a mechanic,” Anders replied sourly, trying to ignore just how creepy it was that the arm was still moving. “I fix broken bones. I’ve only done rudimentary work with prosthetics; I didn’t have many patients with them back in Bavaria.”
He ignored the fact that she’d put her feet up on the cheap folding table he’d turned into a desk - it would bother him if it were worth more, but he doubted it. His “clinic” was little more than a corner cordoned off with curtains and filled with salvaged equipment.
He looked up from the prosthesis, eyebrows raising at her words - so she feared a medical reasoning after all. That explained why she came to him.
“If it’s not a mechanical issue, then it could be neurological,” he said, carefully laying the arm down on the table between them. “It could be motor nerve damage, if you’ve had the arm cinched too tightly for long periods of time. The arm might not recognize the signals your brain is sending properly because of the compression, so that could be what’s causing a delay.”
“That’s only a guess, though,” he added. “We’ll need to do an examination, and then we can talk treatments.”
“A good friend will always stab you in the front.”
“Are you seriously defending him right now?”
If Inara hadn’t lost so much blood, her… anger may have come with a little bit more fire. But as things were, the best she could manage was a very lazy glare at her dear healer, and try her best not to pass out.
“A good friend wouldn’t stab me at all,” she grumbled. “Fuckin’ ginger.”
commanderhopeless:
“I’m torn up about it!” Literally, if he hadn’t noticed.
“Yes. I walked into my own room and startled him.” Really, what kind of an excuse was that? Anders’ touch might have done quite a bit to soothe the pain in her chest, but the pretty healer certainly wasn’t doing a hell of a lot to soothe her rage, subdued as it was by the lack of blood in her body. “What was he even doing in there? Did you put him up to another stupid stunt?”
“Okay, first of all, good one--” Anders began, but he at least had enough sense to cut himself off to keep from pissing her off further. He wasn’t going to risk her trying to get up and punch him across the face. Mostly because it would undo his hard work to keep her from bleeding to death, but also because Inara hit like a sack of bricks and he preferred not having that wrath turned back on him.
“I’m offended that you’d try to pin this one on me,” he replied, before turning his attention back to the wound. It was almost healed over, at least; he was starting to run low from the effort. “Knowing Hawke, he was probably trying to be romantic. He just... made the mistake of thinking he could get away with hiding behind the curtains. You both probably mistook one another for burglars. It would be funnier if you weren’t, you know, bleeding.”
“I’m not--okay, I am, but to be fair it was an accident and I’m sure he’s completely torn up about it,” Anders placated her, focusing more on knitting the stab wound closed than at her expression. Not like it would have fazed him much, anyway.
“And you did startle him,” he reminded her gently a moment later, finally chancing a glance at her to make sure she hadn’t passed out on him. His magic was good enough to heal a puncture wound, be he couldn’t do much for blood loss once it was out of the body. “You’re lucky he didn’t go for your throat. I’ve seen him do far worse things with a dagger.”
Some art finally am I right. I felt I needed to make a proper prettied up painting for Anders too :* also the rest of my remaining commissions are done and will be mailed tomorrow!
Reminder that I have a society6 store and you can get this one as a print as well!!

STRANGER THINGS SENTENCE MEME
episode 005-008.
‘hands up!’
‘how else do you think i got in here?’
‘drink. it’ll calm your nerves.’
‘i knew he was alive.’
‘don’t look at me like that.’
‘you’re not gonna like this, but i think you need to seriously consider the possibility that all this… it’s in your head.’
‘the stupid radio kept going in and out.’
‘it’s like riddles in the dark…’
‘i’m here as long as you need me, okay?’
‘how are you holding up?’
‘can we talk? alone?’
‘you need to leave.’
‘you being here… you’re just making things worse, like always.’
‘look, i’m on your side.’
‘take that down. it’s inappropriate.’
‘can’t he just, you know, outsmart the bad guys?’
‘sometimes the bad guys are smart, too.’
‘i’m gonna get you some new crayons.’
‘you want to go out there.’
‘we might not find anything.’
‘this is a terrible idea.’
‘you could tell someone, but they’re not gonna believe you.’
‘i’ll tell her when this thing is dead.’
‘we were wondering if you had time to talk?’
‘science is neat. but i’m afraid it’s not very forgiving.’
‘i’ll take care of this, alright?’
‘funny, right? they keep doing our job for us.’
‘it’s a shame what they’ve done to this family.’
‘do you even understand how a compass works?’
‘i hope that’s not meant for me.’
‘listen, i’m really sorry. i mean, even before you threatened me with a baseball bat.’
‘i was a total dick.’
‘i’ll call you later.’
‘you never cared about him!’
‘get out!’
‘you need me here.’
‘you’re a mess!’
‘maybe i’m crazy.’
‘you ever shot a gun before?’
‘he made me kill a rabbit.’
‘i cried for a week.’
‘screw that.’
‘i told you not to call me.’
‘even after everything that happened, i don’t regret any of it.’
‘do you think she’s acting weird?’
‘how far?’
‘is that okay?’
‘turn back.’
‘just hold on a little longer, oaky?’
‘don’t take it so personally, okay? i don’t like most people.’
‘you know, i was actually starting to think that you were okay.’
‘she’s trying to sabotage our mission.’
‘just leave her alone!’
‘fresh blood.’
‘it’s not safe.’
‘they bugged my place.’
‘this whole time, you were right.’
‘she used us!’
‘she’s like a stray dog!’
‘screw you!’
‘for all we know, it’s her fault.’
‘what is wrong with you?!’
‘why would you do that?!’
‘i’m not nine anymore.’
‘you’re worried about her?’
‘would you just shut up?’
‘do you want the lights off or…?’
‘couldn’t sleep?’
‘every time i close my eyes, i just keep seeing that thing.’
‘you wanna go back out there?’
‘it seems to hunt at night, like a lion or a coyote.’
‘i can’t believe she didn’t come back.’
‘she said it wasn’t safe.’
‘i shouldn’t have yelled at her.’
‘all of you were being a bunch of little assholes!’
‘she didn’t mean to hurt you.’
‘i’m not spending my time on her anymore.’
‘i’m going to the gate.’
‘don’t be frightened.’
‘they’re just here to watch.’
‘whatever it is, it can’t hurt you.’
‘it’s reaching out to you.’
‘don’t turn away from it this time.’
‘are you lost?’
‘mouth breather.’
‘you know you have to pay for those!’
‘you may have seen him on the news.’
‘i told you, you’re wasting your time.’
‘what matters is that he’s your best friend.’
‘i call bull on your logic.’
‘you read any stephen king?’
‘the doctors all say it’s a coping mechanism.’
‘what’s the weirdest part? me or the bear trap?’
‘uh-oh! she looks upset…’
‘you don’t want to be known as the lying slut now, do you?
‘kick his ass!’
‘only love makes you that crazy.’
‘you’re dead.’
‘i know you did something to me.’
‘i’ll cut him right now!’
‘that’s right! you better run!’
‘she’s our friend and she’s crazy!’
‘you come back here and she’ll kill you!’
‘i’m sorry…’
‘i’m the monster.’
‘you saved me.’
‘still pretty?’
‘i’m happy you’re home.’
‘the bad men are coming!’
‘they’re on us!’
‘that was – awesome.’
‘friends don’t lie.’
‘why is he wearing handcuffs?’
‘i wanna see you in my office.’
‘what happened to her hair?’
‘we want to help him.’
‘do you have any idea where he might have gone?’
‘this place is like a fortress.’
‘you’re sorry? that is not good enough.’
‘you act like you’re all alone out there in the world, but you’re not.’
‘a psychotic child broke his arm!’
‘she doesn’t even look like a girl.’
‘the cops should just lock him up forever.’
‘for once in your life, shut your damn mouth!’
‘you never even liked her because she’s not miserable about you.’
‘she actually cares about other people.’
‘you gonna fight me now, too?’
‘this is an emergency. do you copy?’
‘we know you’re in trouble.’
‘if you’re there, pick up.’
‘we can protect you and we can help you.’
‘this is our government. they’re on our side.’
‘maybe this is all a trap and the bad men are coming to get us right now!’
‘is that my dress?’
‘i can’t find them.’
‘how do we make her better?’
‘i can find them.’
‘i have a science question.’
‘do you know anything about sensory deprivation tanks? specifically how to build one?’
‘why are you keeping this curiosity door locked?’
‘we’ll be careful.’
‘it’s not gonna snow next week, is it?’
‘i don’t want you anywhere near this, alright?’
‘i’m gonna find him. you gotta trust me on this.’
‘what did she even eat?’
‘she really likes eggos.’
‘i knew you were acting weird.’
‘no more secrets, okay?’
‘from now on, we tell each other everything.’
‘you’re a very brave girl. you know that, don’t you?’
‘i am gonna be there with you the whole time.’
‘if it ever gets too scary in that place, you just let me know, okay?’
‘gone.’
‘we’re right here.’
‘don’t be afraid. i’m right here with you.’
‘i’ve got you.’
‘it’s okay. you’re safe.’
‘you’re okay.’
‘you tell him i’m coming.’
‘hurry.’
‘you did so good…’
‘i’m gonna find him.’
‘i wanna finish what we started.’
‘i want to kill it.’
‘let me out!’
‘i want to save them.’
‘i can’t do that. not without your help.’
‘i know who you are…’
‘i know what you’ve done.’
‘now you’re asking for my help? go to hell.’
‘did i stutter?’
‘i know you went a little too far this time and you messed up in a big way.’
‘you really messed up, didn’t you?’
‘you’re just a junkie.’
‘they’re probably just sucking face somewhere.’
‘where’s the girl?’
‘nobody’s ever gonna find out about this.’
‘you’re gonna leave them alone.’
‘this place had nothing to do with it.’
‘i want you to slow down your breathing. take deep breaths.’
‘just breathe…’
‘stop talking.’
‘this is crazy!’
‘in case you forgot, we’re still fugitives.’
‘the bad men are still looking for us.’
‘she’s kind of a badass now, so…’
‘i’m just gonna go get some chocolate pudding.’
‘you need to leave.’
‘did he do this to you?!’
‘i’m not asking you, i’m telling you – get out of here!’
‘is that – is that gasoline?’
‘put the gun down.’
‘will someone please explain to me what the hell is going–?!’
‘this is crazy. this is crazy. this is crazy. this is crazy! this is crazy! this is crazy!’
‘are you insane?! it’s going to come back!’
‘come on, you son of a bitch!’
‘go to hell, you son of a bitch!’
‘it has to be dead… it has to be.’
‘i found the chocolate pudding!’
‘what’s “putting”?’
‘she can make you whatever you like.’
‘my point is, they’ll take care of you.’
‘this will charge your battery right up, i’m tleling you.’
‘they found us.’
‘she’s just drained…’
‘there’s more blood.’
‘she’s barely breathing.’
you want her, you have to kill us first!’
‘eat shit!’
‘you’re sick, but i’m going ot make you better.’
‘bad.’
‘the bad man’s gone.’
‘promise?’
‘is it dead?’
‘no more.’
‘goodbye.’
‘he’s not breathing–’
‘i love you more than anything in the world.’
‘i need you to wake up now.’
‘just breathe. breathe.’
‘you’re okay…’
‘you’re home.’
‘you’re safe.’
i made you a new mixtape.’
‘be careful with him.’
‘it’s dead.’
‘we made a new friend.’
‘she has superpowers.’
‘something is coming.s omething angry.’
‘whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, that’s not it, is it?’
‘it doesn’t make any sense!’
‘he farted.’
‘you’re like a little girl!’
‘i didn’t get you anything.’
‘can i open it?’
‘did you give it to him?’
‘no more snooping.’
‘it’s fun.’
‘science is neat. but i’m afraid it’s not very forgiving.’
“Preaching to the choir, my friend.” She undid her mechanical arm at the elbow and tossed it into his lap without a car. It was science that had taken it from her.“How long’s this gonna take this time?”
The arm flopped across his lap and he let out a wheeze of pain - the thing was way heavier than it looked. He grabbed it up by the wrist and examined it for a moment, trying to make some sense of the mechanics behind it. He did better with flesh; metal was a bit more challenging.
“Can’t give you a truthful estimate until I get a better idea of what I’m dealing with,” Anders replied, giving her a disdainful look. “I’ll probably need you to talk me through it. It’s your arm - you know it better than I do.”

@howeveryclever replied to your post: life update
Always glad to have you back ♡
[ i’m glad to be back ;v; ]
life update
[ I think the most important thing to note right now is that I’m still alive, which is the most basic life update I can give, I guess?
Anyway, things are pretty hectic in meatspace for me as I’m sure some of you guys have noticed via my continually extended absence(s). For those who weren’t aware I was promoted to assistant manager at my job, so that came with extended hours, and now we’re in the Christmas countdown rush (it’s retail so I doubt I need to say more) so being around is quite a bit harder.
As for more recent news, I went through a rough patch with some overdue homework, a bad work schedule, sudden sickness, and then a few weeks ago I managed to hit a deer with my car on the way to work. I’m doing okay now and I just got my car back from the shop, thankfully, so that chapter is at the very least closed. It was a close call and we were afraid the insurance company was going to total it, but they paid off the repairs after all and my little Focus is back in business.
I’m still in school but I am very close to being done; I’m in my second to last class before graduation. I would have been done sooner but I had a pretty Bad Time that I don’t care to elaborate on and had to withdraw from a class that I will be retaking next semester. Things are smoothing out a bit as of late, though, so it’s just a matter of staying on top of my homework. (Never mind the fact that I’m writing this post instead of doing homework. Don’t follow my lead, kids.)
Living situation still isn’t the best, but it’s gotten a little better thanks to my work schedule keeping me out of the house. I am currently looking at apartments and a second job to pay for said apartments. We’ll see how that turns out.
On the mental wellbeing front I am doing far better than I have in the past; I’m learning a lot more about privacy and moderation, though, so I won’t say much more than that. Rest assured that I’m doing okay and I am taking good care of myself - or, as good as I can, given the circumstances.
Staying away from DARP’s been a good time for me to reflect on past behaviors and suffice to say I’m going to re-approach my place in this community from a more casual and hopefully saner standpoint. Unfortunately that means I will be making some changes to my availability for RP - namely, I’m going to be incredibly selective and less interested in stretching myself thin in the name of gaining popularity. I just want to have fun; if it stops being fun, then it’s time to take a break. Simple enough.
Right now I’ve got a lot of obligations to worry about aside from work and school; I’m woefully behind on art commissions to the point that it’s unacceptable. I’ll be revisiting those soon, I hope, because it’s important that I follow through on those things above all else. Hopefully this is a good chance for me to get it together.
Anyway, all that being said, I hope I can return in some capacity, even if it’s just to pop my head in every few weeks and reply to two or three threads. I miss this blog, and I miss you guys. And even if it doesn’t work out in the end and I have to leave for good, I figure that’s okay, because it doesn’t change the fact that I had a good time here. Hopefully I can make it last a little longer. ]
