@morelikeuaantavacation HELP????? HE BROUGHT MUD IN?????
About how bad is it? Is the mud in the lab or just in the house itself?
Remthalas threw the child into the sea, which takes care of him? but not the damn mud! where did he get it????? It's tracked through the house and then there's just a huge mess of it in the lab???? but I need you to understand.... the mud terminates in the lab.
Ought to keep him busy for awhile so you can clean up as well. Do you need me to bring some cleaning supplies over?
Heyyyyyyyy, if it isn't my favorite hero! Don't tell the kid I said that.
Uaanta had been hard at work in her garden when she heard the familiar voice. Pushing the brim of her sunhat back, she took a good look and was unsurprised to see none other than Notha Ly'ehr swaggering through the gate like she owned the place. Well, if nothing else, she had to admire the woman's confidence and... "By the Makers," Force of habit, but at her age, who could begrudge it, "How'd you get so much younger? Did yeh die again?"
"You have no idea. I question if he's a sea elf or a tree elf Som days," she snorted at her own dumb joke. "if you told me weeks ago that this kind of thing suited me I'd tell you you're crazy. I still will. You're crazy. I'm just winging it."
After all, she had an easier time didn't she?
"We're all doing our best." she conceded. "Remthalas is teaching him a lot, but even he has a tough time with Dave some days. Little darling almost bit his lure off the other day. Very rude."
"it looked tasty!" Dave protested.
"No! We don't eat our parents! You know better, Dave," she scolded.
"I think you'll find that's not altogether unusual with toddlers. He'll put anything he can get his hands on in his mouth and he'll just go wherever he pleases, regardless of the danger." She glanced at Notha, "Although, I do believe some never do grow out of that last one, sometimes." Uaanta sighed, "You know, you're going to have to be better with your own risk management, goin' forward. He's going to be looking to you and Remthalas to learn how to be an adult."
"Wait, some people just--just--eat their parents?? What the actual--uhhhhhhhh... " she looked at Dave who grinned at her and dared her to say the cuss word so he could. That's how it worked obviously.
"Not what I meant." She couldn't help but laugh at the misunderstanding. This sweet baby wouldn't actually eat them...well, she didn't think so anyway... "I mean I'm sure in some species it happens, but what I mean is that he's a toddler. He's going to take anything he can reach that looks remotely interesting to him, and he's going to put it in his mouth. And your little guy there? He's got teeth already, so you are goin to want to be ready for that."
"Dave have you been eating things that are not food again?" She asked, seriously.
He nodded.
"DAVE!"
Uaanta looked over at Dave, "And what've you been eatin, then, little one?" She asked him. In fairness to him, instinct would probably also be telling him in an unfamiliar place to find what food looked like through experimentation, so there was that to consider, too.

Uaanta, Notha's building a tower to fight God.... again.
By the makers, I'll never for the life of me understand how someone so allegedly smart can do so many damned fool things. An' here I thought she was ready to be a responsible parent.
"I'm teaching the boy about unionizing, Uaanta!"
"And is there a particular reason you can't do so in a there are reason that you can't do that in a less morally dubious way?"
Heyyyyyyyy, if it isn't my favorite hero! Don't tell the kid I said that.

Dave nodded excitedly, he really wanted the garden patch! Then he can play in the dirt! Never mind he's probably going to track it everywhere. He licked the trowel. Huh, underwhelming. He expected spice.
"What if I don't love him. It's happened before, I put in so much effort for people, because it was the right thing to do, but I didn't even care about them. I'm scared I'll wake up and it'll be Dave next."
He looked up at her from the dirt, threw down his tools and trotted over to hug her legs. She reached down to pet his head.
"I think you already know you do, though." Uaanta noted gently. "It's in the way you handle him. You don't act like you're going through the motions. And he's always going to have part of you and part of Remthalas in him. And even when you have trouble loving or liking yourself, you always love Remthalas, don't you?" She smiled, watching Notha with her son, "And the longer you know him, you'll know more and more of him as a unique person. I was scared, myself, once, when I was a new mother. After all, these hands were so good for fighting, for violence, for questing and building, but what did they know of nurturing? Don was always better at that. But time and effort helps you get more comfortable with it, and you'll come to surprise yourself."
"It's that obvious huh? I've made peace with myself. It's... Balance, I need to be balanced. It's difficult but not impossible. Dave is... He's special. He's not just parts of us, he's his own person, new. Evie and the others are probably the same."
She stepped back and knelt down for him. Dave wasted no time glomming onto her. Immediately he was playing and pulling on her hair. Not maliciously, he just didn't know his own strength yet.
"OW OW OW, GENTLE, DAVE, GENTLE!" She tugged on his wrist, but he continued flip-flopping her hair in tufts. Maybe he could get away with nibbling this time. No, no, he thought he could feel a stern gaze on him. He'd better wait.
"Oh aye, it's fairly clear." Uaanta laughed, watching her with Dave. "But it suits you, in all honesty. Mm, bit of a climber, isn't he?" The toddler was already on Notha's back, getting rough. She lifted him gently, "Now now, little man, you know you have to be careful with people, right? You're a very strong lad, after all."
Hopefully Remthalas would be teaching him about controlling his prodigious strength.

"it wasn't in the plans. I didn't plan for this. I just sort of.... Made him... And his errr, I don't know if siblings is the right word. I just didn't think about what happens after." she rubbed the back of her neck. "it sounds horrible when I say it like that. He's such a sweet thing. When he isn't biting, then he's a right little bastard. I introduced him to Remthalas and you know what he did? He bit him! Nearly took his thumb clean off."
Dave glanced up from the holes he was digging and grinned, a wide row little needle teeth.
"Unrepentant. He gets that from me. He's developmentally 2 or 3 years old? I don't remember how many actual years. A lot of projects were put in stasis while I was locked away."

"Ah well, a lot of parents have little surprises." She looked back at Dave, crouching to correct the way he was holding the spade, "There, that'll be more comfortable in your hand if you do it this way." Uaanta noted, "Go on, give it a try." "He seems like a good boy, but you're going to have to take care of his biting issue before he gets too much older and his teeth get sharper, these are only baby teeth. It looks like a lot in his little head, but you've seen how much Remthalas has." She patted Dave's head, "What you're gong to want to do is a gentle--must stress that, gentle- flick, tap, or nudge to the nose, or some other way, if you know one, to break his concentration so his jaws loosen and you can get out of his mouth. He's not being hurt, or punished, just surprised or distracted. Then, immediately, when you get free, pat him or praise him for letting go. Believe it or not, had to deal with somethin similar from a younger kid who was raised in the forest. Brought out a lot sooner than I was. She was a pretty bitey kid, too. So what we're doing is creatin' a good association with being gentle. He's going to be stronger than other children, so learning control and when to use his strength is key." She sighed slightly at that, "After all, if you're a little kid who can't control your strength, one mishap can leave you feeling pretty isolated and destroy some trust in yourself." The boy had a lot of potential, but he wasn't human, and she wasn't an expert in his species. "If you come across some situations Remthalas doesn't have answers to, you might have to get creative in finding resources. Garden variety sea elves are a start, but people with experience raising dragons can help, too. That young hero from the other continent might know a thing or two. Got a feisty little one, after all."
Dave was all too happy and willing to keep digging holes. The spade fit better in his hand, so he was digging a deep hole this time. He didn't know if that was right but he didn't really get why he was digging a hole. Other than it being fun. There were also worms and bugs. He resisted the urge to put a fat juicy dirt noodle in his mouth. He resisted. He was resisting so hard!!!!!
"I'll remember that. When... When does the whole motherly thing kick in? I never wanted kids. How do I make that feeling go away? I'm worried I'll mess him up as badly as my parents did me and--" there were a thousand things she could fill in with, "I'm worried I won't be what he needs. Dave deserves love and fulfillment, and I'm doing my best, I want him to be happy and healthy but if that's not enough then what do I do?"
She sighed and watch Dave digging holes and burying seeds, and sometimes bugs or leaves and twigs he found around himself. He picked up a worm and looked around. Upon seeing Notha watching him he slowly put it back in the hole.
Uaanta occasionally corrected Dave's antics, teaching him what crops were planted at what depths and how to aerate the soil with the hand trowel. "For a beginner, he's already pretty good at this," She remarked, "This patch is new, I'll fence it in and put a sign with his name so he can come back to it as much as he wants to tend it and later to harvest some fresh veggies and fruits."
She listened to Notha's concerns, and let her talk. Some of it just needed to come out. "You're doing just fine so far. The important part is how much you love him and want to do right by him. Parenthood doesn't come naturally to everyone, honestly I'd say it probably doesn't come natural to most people. It takes work, and you're putting in that work. For now, he's happy, he's healthy, and you guys have a support network you can turn to when you don't feel like you're up to the task."

"Ssssssssssomething like that..." She sucked a breath in through her teeth. "A lot of things have happened since last we saw one another. Remthalas is thankfully no longer dormant~! A lot has happened."
She kicked a stone, not hard, just something to do with herself. "Soooo, nice house. Nice garden. Grow it yourself? The garden not the house."
"Well," The old Hero took in the sudden change in posture, eyes still as sharp as they ever were. "That's a blessing, then, isn't it?" Something was wrong. She could tell in how quickly Notha had deflated. "Oh aye, grew the house from a seed meself years ago. Got the garden out of one of those fancy catalogues." She replied, sounding dead serious before barking out a laugh, "Ah, well, we did build the house. And the garden's just been growing over the years. Keeps me busy these days. I've got bees, too, if ya ever wanted to take a look. That's not why you're here, though, is it? Somethin's tickin around in that brain of yours."
"Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllllll," She rubbed the back of her neck. Before she could explain further, something small, blue and white ran out and after one of the chickens, shrieking in delight. The chicken was not delighted.
Uaanta's gaze followed the small darting figure, watching as they came out to chase the chickens around. She raised a single eyebrow at Notha. "Explain." She demanded, looking her dead in the eye. "And who's this?"
"Uhhhhhhhh," So No wasn't an option. She rocked on her heels and twisted her fingers behind her back, "That's Dave, clearly."
Dave darted around Uaanta, almost ran into Notha before squealing and looping around her after the poor fowls.
"An' what's a Dave, then? Don't you weasel-word around with me, Notha Ly'ehr. You owe me at least some explanation after everything, don't you think?" She dodged another incoming Dave-dash before looking back at Notha, "Seein' as you don't just come around for visits, after all this time, I'm assuming you're here for a reason, so you might as well spit it out."
"I mean he's an abyssal elf, clearly." She blinked, Dave ran up, holding a,
"Chikem!" He showed off his catch to her.
"Sure is bud, why not give that back to Granny Uaanta, okay?"
He plodded over and held it up to her, "Chikem."
"This is Dave, he's my.... he's mine." She sighed. "I'm out of my depths here. He's just a little dude."
Well well. He certainly was an abyssal elf, despite the unlikelihood of that, "So... You have a son now." She remarked, taking the chicken back from Dave and returning her to her area. "Funny thing, that. You always acted like that was never in the plan." Uaanta moved to show Dave how to work a trowel and a spade, showing him how to plant and cover seed potatoes, letting Notha collect her thoughts. He seemed to be a bright child, and caught on with minimal corrections.
Farming was good for the focus, and for burning some energy. "So how old is he?"
