This guy I know has just posted a video in a group chat I'm in about pronoun usage about how we grow up and are shoved into boy/girl boxes, constantly asked what we are and why we are how we are, and how as soon as we come out and say 'i am this, these are my pronouns' people get mad, and yet he doesn't use the correct pronouns for someone who's literally in that group chat?! They are feminine presenting but use they/them and I've NEVER heard him use their pronouns??????
Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month - Day 20: have you found any accommodations that help you manage your tics?
When I was working, I found the following very helpful:
Breaks in long meetings
Ability to fidget, use fidget items, doodle
When appropriate and needed, inform staff that someone in the room has Tourette's to avoid confusion and offense, and improve understanding
Sitting on the ends of tables, or not between people to avoid feeling trapped and triggering tics that would hit those sitting next to me
Access to a quiet, private, comfortable space
Insuring basic human needs were met - work ca get busy, but people should always still receive a break, food, and water. Hunger is a huge tic trigger for me
Having the workplace receive professional training from a Tourette's charity
Deadline flexibility - telling me about projects and tasks in advance where possible and allowing some flexibility for submission, or allowing me to delegate work
Ability to use earplugs to aid sensory needs
At university:
Breaks in the middle of long lectures
Ability to use fidget items, doodle
Specialist tutor to aid studies
Coursework deadline flexibility
My course head changed the room we had lectures in to a more spacious one because the previous one was extremely cramped and made me feel very trapped, which always made me tic more. A more spacious room massively reduced my tics
Tourette Syndrome Awareness Month - Day 18: have you ever experienced bullying/harassment because of your tics?
I wouldn't say to a great extent, but I have received many misinformed, silly, and not great comments from people. The worst was online after the BAFTA situation when I received some very concerning comments and asks from a couple of individuals. For me, this is all I've experienced. I think it's important for me to add that I had to learn to suppress my tics at a very young age, so suppressing is first instinct to me now and very difficult to undo. This means, to an extent, I can avoid ticcing in public, out of a deep fear of judgement and a worry of receiving aggression from others. But this does come with consequences.
A lot of people with Tourette's have and do experience bullying and harassment, verbally, digitally, and physically. Sometimes this can come from some of the people closest to us too, like immediate family. It deeply concerns me how many individuals report that their parents shout at them for their tics, even punish them. I can't put into words how damaging it is to be told to 'stop doing that or' over and over again.
School can be exceptionally difficult for people with Tourette's, too. Kids can be extremely cruel and these negative experiences can and do last a lifetime.
All we ask if for people is to think before they act and have some understanding and care. Obviously some tics can be highly offensive and suggestive, but the level to which some will go to punish that is highly disturbing.
Is it worth verifying my age on here because there's queer art I want to view but it won't let me onto people's blogs :(( but obviously UK and age verification and data and all that...
do not forget the patron saint of these weeks that we celebrate ourselves proudly and openly in the streets
her name was Marsha P Johnson, and we have her to thank for so much.
remember, the first Pride was a riot, and she was one of the brave souls who endured it to help carve the path which so many of us walk today. she helped found several activist groups regarding LGBT safety and wellbeing. and she was absolutely radiant, too.
you can download current and past hi-res versions of these over at my ko-fi (ok to print for personal use): https://ko-fi.com/mxmorgan/shop/freedownloads
you can also snag shirts here which go to various orgs: https://mxmorgan.threadless.com/collections/pride
these get reposted a whole lot from here to reddit to twitter to tiktok and on and on, and i don't personally care whether or not i'm credited. i made these for everyone to use, enjoy, and find meaning in them. i appreciate folks who do credit me, but if able, please at least link to the threadless shop in the previous post - folks can get an official shirt where 90% of earnings go to trans led orgs focused on mental health (which is an important matter in general, but very personal to me) and not from a scam bot site selling AI-churned maga garbage where you probably won't get one anyway. i also suggest downloading the files from my ko-fi - they are free/PWYW and you can use them to make your own shirt, patch, embroidery project, whatever. tips are always nice, cuz i do like a pizza now and then, but never required for download.
final thought - breaking the pride tradition and more than likely won't make a new piece. the top one from TDOV is all i'm making this year. i have my focus on other projects currently and i don't want to force a poster design. these came from a specific head space and my current head space is Very Tired lmao so i wanna work on other things. 👍
