i think that “i’m doing good i’m on some new shit” is my favorite way any album has ever been opened
They are fictional characters but you’re crazy if you don’t think there’s a bit of personal expression in the struggles / characteristics she chooses to showcase in them.
my favorite part of this album is that taylor is all over it, even when she isn’t the main character. the way she blurs fact and fiction is brilliant and so is her storytelling but it’s extremely confessional in that it’s about her even when it isn’t. she has to pull these storylines from somewhere - in august and betty we see stuff that calls back to her very old work, since that’s her experience of being a teenager; in illicit affairs we see her drawing on relationships that have been kept secret and her fears of being cheated on based on her past; in cardigan she offers direct parallels to feeling loved and healed whole by another person like on reputation, even though the person in the song feeling those things isn’t her. it’s brilliant.
this album is so like bar-setting. taylor is known for being a country girl gone pop and everyone thinks of her pop hits and now she just dropped an album that is miles above in songwriting and i’m sure that a majority of people had no idea that she was capable of writing this style of music and i really think this the album that really turns a lot of heads. her range in songwriting clearly has a range that is rarely, and i mean rarely ever seen in music.

so the last great american dynasty is about the woman who owned taylor’s rhode island mansion before her (the one where she threw all the fourth of july parties) and the song is all the folklore about the woman who lived there and how she was a “mad woman” and then at the end of the bridge taylor says “and then it was bought by me” and switches it to her perspective and how now she’s the mad woman who owns it… i…
having a album with no lead singles was really cool??? we had no idea how this album would sound until it was released, we might never get this again but i really enjoyed that
I’m having a break down over The Last Great American Dynasty!!! Taylor tells the story of Rebekah Harkness and all the trouble she caused in Watch Hill Rhode Island with her insane parties, feuds with neighbors and her general debauchery that was the talk of the town. And then she died and Holiday House sat quietly for 50 years, “free of women with madness, their men and bad habits” AND THEN Taylor has the audacity to say “And then it was bought by me // I had a marvelous time ruining everything” because Taylor was know for her crazy parties there and her “men and bad habits” and we know there were tabloids publishing stories of her fighting with people in town. I REALLY underestimated this song upon first listen. Holy SHIT.

the fact that there is no track called folklore is so interesting which means taylor has worked around a concept again and i can’t wait to read the prologue because that will explain a lot
taylor has quite literally NEVER done anything like this before and i think it just proves that she’s making music to make music, not for anyone’s approval, not for ratings, not for the recognition, she’s just like “here i’m proud of this, take it” AND I’M HERE FOR IT
