LILO & STITCH 2002 | dir. Dean DeBlois, Chris Sanders
preempire:
Shara’s hesitation only makes his worry spike more, but Din is careful not to fidget or look like he’s waiting in any way that’s impatient, not wanting to tip anything into his favour. Shara has a big heart– a big heart that Din has gotten to know intimately in her words and her play and her easily-given hugs– and it wouldn’t be right to use it for his own purposes, even if his purposes do involve wanting to help.
That being said, the relief that fills him when she ends up agreeing is indescribable, and in the same way he’d been careful not to fidget, he’s careful now to make more noise than he has to. He wants Shara to know where he is and what he’s doing to the best of her ability; she isn’t looking at him, but the clink of his boots should tell her that he’s come in, and the creak and click of the door should tell her he’s shut and locked it.
What’s wrong bubbles up Din’s throat with horrid measures of restlessness. He swallows the words down, though, shifts on his feet again, and moves to sit on the floor of her room. If he thumps quite unceremoniously onto his bottom, it’s only because he wants her to hear that he’s sat, too.
Back straight, Din’s legs bend crisscross applesauce beneath him. His hands rest on his lap, and his visor takes in the mess of her hair… her hair that must’ve been a braid, he thinks.
In the end, the question that leaves him is, “Do you want to talk?”
“Because we don’t have to, if talking is weird. Being quiet together is okay.”
Din counts the seconds in his head. One, two, three.
“Sitting quiet together is okay, too.”
She doesn’t have to look to track him as he moves from the door and across the room to where she is, and she doesn’t have to look to know when he’s sat down beside her. It’s easier not to look, easier to hide her face and the tears staining it.
The same tears that are still falling despite her best efforts.
But then… He asks her that and tells her that being quiet together is okay and… and big brown eyes look up at him––or at least, attempt to through the tears––and that bottom lip wobbles and then she’s moving. It shouldn’t be a surprise at all to him when the little one starts climbing up onto his lap.
She’s been affectionate almost since she was found, first seeking contact for reassurance and for comfort, and then simply for the sake of it. While that was true of her with almost anyone within the village… it was even more so where her rescuer is concerned.
Din Djarin has been her favorite since first he found her and no one has seemed to make her feel as safe or as cared for as him.
Now is no different.
She settles and immediately throws her arms around him as best she can, sobbing her little heart out against him.
“ ’s–– wrong!” she laments between hiccuping intakes of breath. She offers no further explanation. It is so obvious to her what she means that she doesn’t consider that it might not be for another, though perhaps the state of her hair might be a clue.
“She said–– she’d fix it b-but she di-– didn’… ‘s wrong…”

You, frankly, are a damn delight. You bring light with you wherever you go, and whether you're aware of it or not, you're the life of the party. Despite your flamboyant nature, you're surprisingly soft. You give the sweetest gifts, and are probably the best amateur masseuse of your friend group. Those closest to you see this softness, and love you for it. Remember this when you are called "too much": there is no such thing as too much of you. People who say those things are just too small to have the space for your light. Don't tone it down, just find people who will treasure every piece of you.

WHY DO YOU HURT?
this isn't enough for you
the words creep into your head in the dead of night one night and you cannot get rid of them. 'this isn't enough for me anymore'. you thought this was enough for you at some point, or maybe you hoped that it would be, but it isn't, and it hurts. you need to change something, or die trying. this - life like this - does not make life worth living. there is a lump in your throat that demands attention every waking moment of the day. there is pain in your body like a cavernous maw you cannot keep balance over. this is not what you wanted. you need to change. you can't stay here. it is not a character flaw you want more.

When Din returns from his morning sessions with his smithing master, one of the caretakers from the foundlings’ dormitory building is waiting for him outside the forge. Already this makes him worry, but when he asks them what’s wrong, and they tell him it’s Shara, he cuts across the village without hesitation, with the younger Mandalorian explaining what had happened as quickly as they could.
Shara is new to the Tribe, having recently been saved after the Fighting Corps had been deployed to help a smaller planet in the Mandalore system against the Empire’s destruction. Din cares about the foundlings more than anyone else in the Tribe (except perhaps his buir), but Shara is special. She’s the first foundling he’s ever saved. And, perhaps more importantly, she’s the first he’s felt so connected to he’s considered reassignment to claim her for real.
For the foundlings, Din Djarin would do anything.
For Shara, he would do anything and more.
He hears her crying before he sees her, beskar clinking against the hallway floor as her little sobs echo throughout. Most of the other foundlings are playing outside, but to Din this only makes it worse– Shara is alone, and she’s crying.
His helm peeks through the crack in the door to her room, and his heart shatters immediately after. He wants to swoop in, to take her in his arms and ask what’s wrong, but every foundling has their own boundaries. Today, Din doesn’t know if Shara will take a hug.
So he knocks instead, standing outside her door.
“Shara,” he calls, not very loud at all, but hopefully enough to catch her attention around the cries and sniffles that break his heart. “Su’cuy, Shara. It’s Din.”
He takes in a breath. “Is it okay for me to come in?”
Normally, the girl would have leapt to her feet upon hearing that voice, the voice of her most favorite person here, the one who saved her! She’d have leapt to her feet and rushed over and hugged him! She would also likely have begun chattering at him about her day and telling him of her adventures!
But… she doesn’t… and that should be cause enough for concern, tears aside.
The only sign to start that she’s even heard him is the slightest hiccuping little breath and hands coming up to rub at her eyes. Perhaps she’s making some attempt to hide the evidence of those previously shed, but the tears haven’t stopped.
She doesn’t like it! She doesn’t like this braid! And she doesn’t like crying! And she doesn’t like Din seeing her crying! After all, some of the older kids tease her for it and what if Din thought she was silly, too!
He’s here though, and she doesn’t want to tell him that it’s not okay. What if he thought she didn’t like him anymore? What if he thought that meant he couldn’t come see here again ever? That would be worse than him seeing her crying, wouldn’t it?
After several long moments, she nods, though she makes no move to turn towards him, still trying to scrub at her eyes, and she doesn’t speak. The words feel caught in her throat.

Water drips down the side of Din’s face, and as he looks at himself in Cobb’s mirror– something he’d been careful not to do every time he stayed previously, but he’s dar’manda now, so what does it matter?– his fingers stroke the side of his jaw where his beard is starting to come in.
He never knew his haircut was so bad. His fingers stroke through that, too, and the only reason he knows it’s uneven is because he’s fairly certain everyone else he knows has a better sense of balance.
He’s a disaster. Probably. But with the kid gone, what does it even matter?
(He’s pointedly ignoring the Darksabre at his hip.)
He spends a few moments just looking at himself, unsure how to reconcile the reflection that looks back at him. The last time he’d seen himself, he’d been ten-and-four, watching his own face as his beskar helm was lowered onto his skull for the first time. It’s bizarre how much he’s aged. It’s bizarre how he looks as old as he feels, and when he thinks about how this must have been how Grogu saw him…
Well. It takes a significant effort not to cry again.
When he emerges from Cobb’s refresher minutes later, his helm is back on. He looks around the area, seeking Cobb out, but finds no sign of him.
Instead, he sees the back of someone’s head at the sofa, and stares.
“…hello?”
When she had first agreed to go along with Cobb Vanth––the Marshal of Mos Pelgo, he had told her––it had been with the knowledge that her buir ‘Mando’, as he had apparently been dubbed, would return in the near future. She had rather comfortably settled into the town. There was a familiarity and a comfort to it, despite it being so far away from her home.
Or what once was her home.
The thought saddens her when she dwells on it for too long, so she doesn’t. She focuses on what is the most important, the reason that she’s here to start.
Even her highest hopes, however, hadn’t prepared her for how soon not long would be. The Marshal hadn’t been wrong. It seemed almost as though she had arrived yesterday and suddenly, while playing with the children in the schoolyard, the Marshal is running toward them and calling for her.
At first, she had been concerned, thinking something was wrong. She had heard that the town occasionally dealt with raiders and other dangers. Perhaps he needed her to help him with something!
But when he reached her, he brought her away from the other children and told her that Din had returned. Still, there was something in his manner that concerned her, and she pressed, asking him what was the matter. Of course, when he told her of the other Foundling––the one the Imps had been after when the covert was sacked––and how he had been returned to his people… Well, she didn’t have to ask anymore after that. She knows the reason for the Marshal’s grave expression, the deepened lines to his face and the set of his brow.
She had followed him without more than an acknowledgement of what he had told her, and, after he let her into his home and told her to sit wherever she liked while she waits for Din… he had departed with the reason of making the rounds of his patrol.
She suspects he simply wanted to give them some privacy.
When she hears the door open, she tenses though not in apprehension. No, she’s wound like a spring, ready to jump up and to run toward him.
But she waits so she doesn’t startle him.
Only when he speaks does she stand and turn, big brown eyes filling with tears as she finally finally sees him again!
Though taking in his posture, his step, the tone to his voice, she certainly wishes it was under better circumstances…
“… I hope you won’t be mad but I… kind of snuck away from the others,” she begins, the latter part spoken in a rush, and once she says that, the words just start spilling out in the same manner.
“They were going to go back to ground again after everything, and I asked for someone to help me find you and they wouldn’t, even when I kept asking so instead I stopped asking and I left and went looking for you because I was worried you wouldn’t find us again and I didn’t want to stay there if you weren’t and–– ”
There’s a falter to her voice and sniffle then, tears at last starting to fall.
“And I missed you.”
