Hey you - yes you - the one scrolling seeing this.
Hi 👋
You matter.
you are allowed to take up space. to be a little inconvenient. to have needs that don't fit neatly into someone else's schedule. the people worth keeping will make room. they'll be glad to. taking up space isn't a burden you place on them — it's the gift of letting them actually know you.
for anyone whose family loves a version of them that isn't real: I'm sorry. being loved for a costume is its own specific loneliness. I hope you find the people who love the actual you — the inconvenient, unedited, real one. they're out there. that love is realer than the comfortable kind.
being seen accurately is not a small thing when the world has spent years reading you wrong. someone getting you right — your name, your pronouns, your whole self, without effort, without correction — that's not a favor. that's the bare minimum finally arriving. and it feels like everything.
some of us grew up translating ourselves. constantly. running every sentence through a filter before it left our mouths. and then you find the person, or the people, you don't have to translate for. and the exhaustion you didn't even know you were carrying just. sets itself down.
to everyone who learned to make themselves smaller to be safe: you can put it down now. not everywhere, not all at once, not before you're ready. but somewhere. with someone. in one room in the world. you were never too much. you were surrounded by people with too little room.
I’m not a radical, I’m just true to myself. Which is the most terrifying thing to those who believe me radical.
I see you. Not your title, not your job, not your bank account, not your social standing, not the expectations, not the requirements, not the obligations.
You. I see you. And I want to hold you, not who you were told to be.
Seeing you, loving you, being near you. The joy of being completely helpless to my feelings, and being safely vulnerable.
They told you that you should change because the comfort you felt being you was truly intimidating to them.
Support means more than telling someone to live their truth. One has to help defend that truth as well.
to everyone who can't be loud about it: your quiet love counts too. the relationship nobody knows about. the truth you're still holding close. the version of yourself you only get to be behind a closed door. that's pride too. all of it. you count
Do you love them? Do you respect them? If the answers are yes, you do not need to name it, categorize it, or justify it. It's not more complicated than that.
for the people whose families went quiet when they found out: I hope you've built or are building the kind of family that goes loud when you walk in the room. it exists. it's worth the wait. found family is still family. sometimes it's the truest kind.
Being seen is one of the most precious gifts. If you’re reading this, you have given me more than you know. Interact and be seen in return 🙂
she came out to me before she came out to anyone. I will carry that for the rest of my life — being the safe room someone chose first. if you've ever been that person for somebody, you did something holy. you have no idea how much it mattered.
the world told a lot of us that the love we wanted was too much, or not real, or a phase. and then you find the one person who makes you feel like the most ordinary thing in the world. and that ordinariness, after all that noise, is the most extraordinary gift. that's what they couldn't take.
