BIOGRAPHY
Demetria Devonne Lovato always knew that she wanted to pursue a singing career. In an interview with CBS Sunday Monday, Demi mentioned that, at a young age she know that if she was going to become a singer she needed to use her voice for more than just singing. She even made a pact with God, promising that if he made her a singer, she would use her voice for more than just singing and help people with it. Her debut album, Don’t Forgot, was released on September 23, 2008 by Hollywood Records when she was only sixteen years old and her first headlining tour happened the following year. Now at the age of twenty four, Demi Lovato is a multi- platinum superstar with chart-topper songs, is an advocate for anti-bullying and campaigns for mental health. Despite her success, Demi Lovato’s life has not always been charmed. She used to be bullied, undergoes bipolar depression, bulimia, dealt with substance abuse and has been in and out of rehab. Demi was spiraling out of control from the fame and she said herself that she was “...headed down a very, very dark path.” Her counselor, Mike Bear stated during an interview alongside Demi that she was closed off when he first met her and slept a lot. She admitted how manipulative she was during her time in rehab, hiding drugs/alcohol and feeling like she needed them to function. So Mike needed to implement some tough love: he gave her a curfew, took away her phone, credit cards, license and car keys. Luckily, she is now four years sober and brings Mike Bear and his team on tour with her so that her fans can see that treatment is possible. Nothing is more important or special to her than being strong enough to beat her addiction and be alive today. The most important part of recovery is knowing you have a problem and Demi understood that “when you live that fast, you die young.”
CONTENT
This archive are organized into two categories: Images and Videos. Under images is a photo shoot with Demi and her friend, Selena Gomez. The photos were taken by Clark Samuels in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 2009. The photoshoot was for their movie, “Princess Protection Program” and depicted the close bond between these two former disney stars, both on and off screen. Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez have actually known each other before their Disney roles. They met when they were about seven years old, auditioning for the show: “Barney
and Friends”. The remaining twenty nine links are under videos ranging from 2009 to last month. The archive consists mostly of Demi Lovato’s presence on talk shows and news programs in New York. During these appearances we see not only performances of her latest hits, especially “Confident”, but also interviews where we learn interesting things about Demi Lovato. Some fun facts: she swam with sharks, she enjoys listening to rock/metal music, she was a judge on the X Factor (https://archive.org/details/KGO_20131126_073500_Jimmy_Kimmel_Live#start/2100 /end/2160) and she chose the album cover for CONFIDENT to show of her body after training so hard. Through this part of the archive, we see all the many ways Demi Lovato is
an entrepreneur and how she used her platform for good. For starters, she wrote “Staying Strong: 365 days a year” (https://archive.org/details/KGO_20131118_150000_ABC_News_Good_Morning_Am erica#start/6540/end/6600), which was published on November 19, 2013. The book was written with the intention to give hope to those going through a hard time and showing them that you can get through it.”Time and love heals everything”, says Demi. Written as a diary, every page includes a quote, her reflection of that quote and a goal for the day (inspired by a book she would read every morning as a meditation). To further help those in need of guidance, Demi became a co-owner of CAST Centers (https://archive.org/details/KPIX_20160911_130000_Sunday_Morning#start/2460/end /2520), where she received the treatment to beat her addiction. To have everyone feel beautiful both inside and out, DEVONNE by Demi is a line she had developed to fill the gap between “...the pimple years and the wrinkle years.” (https://archive.org/details/WJLA_20150312_110000_Good_Morning_America#start/6 540/end/6600). Demi talks about her new skincare line and how she made sure it was her dream product on March 12, 2015 on Good Morning America. She also took charge when she decided to create her own record label with her partner and good friend, Nick Jonas, and their manager Phil McIntyre. It’s called SafeHouse Records and was founded last year to give the artists more control over their work (https://archive.org/details/WCAU_20150528_110000_Today#start/5820/end/5880). Obviously, with her being a singer, there are also some of Demi’s songs inserted into this archive. The songs here are a compilation of hits from all five of her albums; including: “Get Back”, “Remember December”, “Skyscraper”, “Really Don’t care”, “Old Ways”, and more.
RESEARCH
From this archive, you can study how make-it-or-break-it the music industry is, how do young stars rise to fame so quickly and what is the secret to their success. The world learned of the name Demi Lovato through her roles in Disney movies and her own show, “Sonny with a Chance”. Just like for Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus and now Sabrina Carpenter, Disney Channel served as a stepping stone for Demi’s singing career, a way to get her name out there. Perhaps acting is means for musicians to introduce themselves before shifting their focus more towards music.
Researchers can look into why musicians are so influential on their audience. When it comes to musicians, many sell more than just songs: fragrances, makeup, clothing lines, etc. Fans buy these things for the simple fact that they’re products of their favorite artists. Demi Lovato’s archive proposes the question of how celebrities influence their fans and the effect they can have on their lives. They
can shape our outlook on life, motivate them to be brave and honest. Research facilities can use this document for studies on how artists’ sound tends to evolve with time. Sound transformation is normal. From “Get Back” (2008) to “Old Ways” (2015), Demi Lovato has produced a more passionate sound, along with more music her fans can dance to. We see it in almost all musicians of varying genres. As people grow and change, so does their style, which reflects into their art.
