on the topic of toxic relationships and their perception in media i feel as if we’ve skewed what is healthy for relationships and what isn’t, and it is contributing to declines in mental safety and the likes. i think most prominently this occurs when it comes to “dark romance” but I don’t mean actually well-done dark romance (if that is possible? i may have a poor grasp on the definition), I mean the majority of produced ones that treat grooming/abuse/assault as romantic dynamics or “sexy traits”.
“Oh, but it happens in BDSM!” …No, not at all, in fact. Making this argument removes the essential element that BDSM is built on mutual consent. Even with CNC (which is closer to what people would slip up on and make this excuse with), the acronym still has consensual in it, Consensual Non-Consent. this kind of misconception along with media consumption (like a good deal of yaoi, or a lot of “alluring dark manhwa” like my classmate suggested to me the other day, Jinx. needless to say I watched a video essay on it beforehand and decided I didn’t want to read it because of how it depicts the heavy topics it holds.
i am not trying to shame anyone for what they like and don’t like, what they find okay and what they don’t find okay, this is not directed towards yanblr. this is directed towards media. while certain dynamics of complete overpowering can seem alluring to people, i think one of the distinctions is that it’s fantasy, it’s perceived as detached from reality, and i have no issue with people who like reading dark fantasy, i’ll say it again, this isn’t towards the people, it’s towards media. it’s a very risky genre because it can desensitize people to actual horrors and cause them to treat sexual violence with the “oh, lucky…” mindset. that is when it comes to the level of people, when the media they consume causes them to promote harmful ideas about (and this applies to any genre with mature things, but right now i mean the specific SA surroundings in dark romance) survivors and even the perpetrators themselves (perpetrator ideas like “justifying” why they did it, which is under no circumstances okay at all).
the other day, i was talking with my friend and they were holding a copy of Haunting Adeline. i thought “oh, just a sort of concerning dark romance novel.” but that was because they showed me an excerpt that wasn’t really severe. now watching a book review on it and doing a few quick searches, i find that some of the reviews call its SA scenes “justified r*pe”. WHAT?! this is by far one of the most prominent examples of how dark romance can influence perception to the point that people now begin to excuse the perpetrator because “the victim deserved it” or “the plot called for it”. this is what’s so wrong about romanticizing those sorts of things! dark romance as an overall genre I think should be distinguishable (which it ISN’T, presently) from illegal fetish content.
the point i’m trying to make is that the majority of this kind of content in whatever form, some yaois and some BL manhwa (this isn’t to say there aren’t good ones! they’re just not the point of this essay.), traditional novels, movies, whatever. if they don’t handle these sensitive subjects with care OR they actively try to romanticize them, it can radiate outwards into perceptions of relationships and people can get into abusive dynamics simply because their threat perception has been diluted. it’s dangerous.

time to become an academic~! the correlation between stimuli perceived via internet in the form of social interactions with others and frequent recurrence in real-world thought processes can be found heavily plausible as a connected phenomenon (though this is very basic to say) considering frequent exposure leads to… frequent recurrence.
