Nobody can say anything about you. Whatsoever people say is about themselves. But you become very shaky, because you are still clinging to a false center. That false center depends on others, so you are always looking to what people are saying about you. Whenever you are self-conscious you are simply showing that you are not conscious of the self at all. You donāt know who you are. If you had known, then there would have been no problemāthen you are not seeking opinions. Then you are not worried what others say about youāit is irrelevant!

All negativity is caused by an accumulation of psychological time and denial of the present. Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worryāall forms of fearāare caused by too much future, and not enough presence. Guilt, regret, resentment, grievances, sadness, bitterness, and all forms of nonforgiveness are caused by too much past, and not enough presence.
Eckhart Tolle (via lazyyogi)
A great reminder :)
Gender stereotypes are limiting our sons and our daughters
Patriarchal notions of manhood donāt just harm women, they hurt men. Toxic definitions of masculinity lead to well-documented problems like high rates of gun violence, suicide and sexual violence. Thatās why organizations like the Representation Project are committed to advancing the discussion about how gender limits the freedoms of both women and men. They recognize that societyās gender ideals arenāt only damaging for women; theyāre universally harmful.
Their latest video examines how stereotypes constrain all people from the moment they are born.

Street of Sadness
There's a road I walk down Almost every day Where the silence is loud But there's always something stirring And even on the sunniest day The street is very grey
I step through puddles of rainbowy pollutionĀ And smell the scattered garbageĀ That lays around the entrance of a run-down community centreĀ The garbage makes me wriggle uncomfortablyĀ And for a moment I am angryĀ I am outside, but it feels as if I am trapped in a stuffy roomĀ Dense with old cigarette smoke and worn-out memoriesĀ I am suffocatedĀ
But the people of the communityĀ Are justified in their littering of their small piece of this earth In their ripped rags that are hardly winter coats Their messy, matted hair Their deep worry linesĀ And their desperate mutteringĀ They are disposing carelessly of their empty cigarette packagesĀ In the same way they have been discarded by our rigid society Their garbage seems somehow justifiedĀ I cannot meet their saddened eyesĀ For I am guilty of my own privilege And ashamed of it in this moment So I walk briskly on byĀ Taking a little piece of their pain with meĀ
I am finally at the end of the saddest street I know
"Goodbye, forgotten humanity I will see you again tomorrow"
Thought this was an appropriate video to start this blog off with! This clip is a prime example of how individual acts can impact a population. Not only has this gesture of kindness touched those immediately involved, but has also touched those who have watched the documentation.Ā
And there is no kind of beauty quite like watching one human touch another human's life with kindness... <3Ā

A Prayer to the Closest Star to the Moon
āTheyāre after meā he said
He cried to me
The look in his eyes that night was like no other Iāve seen
Of all the many pangs I have felt
This one stung in the most unique way
Struck the innermost piece of my soul
In a way that surpassed any pain caused by him
Beyond any fit of rage
Beyond any drunken, spat words or vile attacks I could deflect with my strength over time
In his naked, weak vulnerability
In this moment
I forgave him for everything
And rushed to his defense
A small child replaced an angry, foolish man
A small child who needed to be heard; who needed love
Guidance
āItās gonna be okayā
A child that never had it
Who grew sick from a lifetime of being locked in a sad, lonely place
Locked in his mind
Now he could not get out
That flash in his eyes
In one moment
Called to me in a way that I can barely attempt to describe
Like a parent must feel when a child is struggling through the birth canal
A fight for life
Will he make it?
I send forth every ounce of my love and my tears and my strength
But he and fate hold the key
And the odds are terrifying
I am a warrior with two broken legs
I cannot go to battle for him
And so with no religion to back me I pray to the closest star to the moonĀ
That his fight will not be fruitless
That the storm will calm
I scream and I cry and I pray
That he will rise from depths so deep and enveloping
And breathe a new breath
And see through clear eyes
And love himself
And be proud
I pray that he will make it in a way he never has before
I pray
I pray
Helpless, I pray

In Cameroon, a young man was sentenced to three years in prison for sending a text message to another man, saying āIāve fallen in love with you.ā The young manās brave lawyer received emails and text messages threatening to kill his wife and kids. When the lawyer showed the death threats to the police, their response was, āStop defending gays and you will be fine.ā So in Cameroon you can end up behind bars for sending a message of love, but the authorities look the other way when someone threatens to kill children.

Iām not really much of a forager, but Minerās Lettuce is one thing I know well! Growing up in Sonoma County, my mom used to pick it near our house and put it in salads. Itās growing everywhere near our cabin in the woods this Spring, so I couldnāt resist making a salad with it. (I even saw a big patch of it growing in a park in San Francisco recently!) If you donāt have it near you, just substitute baby spinach for this salad.
De-stem the lettuce and wash lightly. Sautee“ a handful of chopped dried figs with 2 diced shallots in a dab of butter for a few minutes until the shallots are golden and a bit translucent. In your palm, form little patties of goat cheese (chevre), then dip each side into breadcrumbs. Fry them in that already buttery pan (adding a bit of olive oil) until crispy and brown. Then top your greens with the goat cheese medallions and the fig mixture, plus a bit of your favorite vinaigrette. Spring in a bite!
