i don't think it's simply a situation where everyone else can see a horse and ilya can't. i think the universe is stopping him from seeing horses looney tunes style. maybe shane invested in a racehorse and they're on their way to see it but before they get to the stable all the horses manage to get free and run away so it's empty by the time they get there. they drive past a pasture but a small meteor hits it before ilya can turn his head, killing all the horses instantly. stuff like that
