Good morning to everyone who is going to troll an oil company today 😇
The goal of bullying Big Oil companies over their climate tweets isn’t just to educate people about corporate hypocrisy. It’s to unite activists around the goal of taking away their social license to operate.
Oil majors have admitted to investors that their business would be in deep trouble without broad public support. They’ve also admitted the biggest threat to maintaining social license is public anger over climate change.
Oil companies could remedy this threat by winding down their fossil fuel operations, and investing heavily in renewable energy. But for the most part, they’ve chosen to combat public anger over climate change by investing in strategic communication. This consistent choice of empty climate words over meaningful climate action is why several Shell executives quit the company this week—and it’s why Heglar says social media call-outs are increasingly powerful.
– from this excellent article about why greentrolling is fun but also actually very effective: Drag them. The climate case for calling out fossil fuel companies online

Pro tip: If you copy and paste a link that said “no free articles” into a private/incognito browser, it will let you read the whole thing.
also if u press the “esc” (escape) key on ur laptop before the page fully loads, it won’t load any pop-ups blocking u from reading. if the article has images, then this method sometimes does not u see them. but! the words will be fine :)
If the site is particularly badly designed, you might just be able to delete the overlay itself. Right click > Inspect element and delete the line of HTML (it’ll be highlighted automatically)
hey kids there is a website called outline.com that will let you read from pretty much any news site with a paywall for free

get okay with being some level of burden on others, seriously
you know what’s a real burden? a person that is so scared of leaning on other people that they try to be completely self sufficient and you end up either having to help them indirectly to save their ego or they have to break down in order to receive help, both of which are so much more heavy to the person that loves them than just being leaned on casually
Europeans really seem to not acknowledge that their lives are ACTIVELY like currently the results of colonial spoils and the comforts they enjoy, the basics of their standards of living, the foundations of their societies and lifestyles are tied to a historic AND ongoing set of colonial relationships
“The only Europeans who benefited from the colonisation were a small group of the richest ones – the noblemen and the political elites. Peasants, however, had no rights, no idea what was happening on the other side of the globe. My great grandparents were illiterate and they didn’t even know the world outside their own culture. Huh, they couldn’t even legally own the land they cultivated for their whole lives. Blaming all the Europeans/white people for the colonisation is absolutely moronic” . Copied this from the comment section because AMEN. Also, love how these “Europeans” post conveniently forget there is Europe east of Germany and Italy, where people were discriminated for centuries for their ethnicity, could not speak their language, own any land, were deprived of basic human rights, forced to take on new national identities. Forget access to education or room to reflect or even realize what was happening in the world of the privilege. The goal was to survive and serve your landlord and pray they will not let you starve. If you want to talk European history, then study the entire European history, not just parts that fit your narrative.
