her gaze follows julien’s towards the window, knowing exactly what she’s going to see, but growing frustrated at the sight anyway. the sky is dark — darker than she admittedly would feel fully comfortable walking under alone — and while it’s not his fault that the city never bothered to invest in better light sources, she throws a tiny glare his way regardless. god, she really hates when he makes a good point. “...fuck.” it’s muttered beneath her breath, head tipping back and casting her eyes to the ceiling as if to ask whatever divine beings might be out there why she’s being tested so much tonight. what did she do wrong? “fine. whatever. if i walk myself home and you happen to be nearby... i’ll survive.” probably.

the conscious knowledge that he’s already pushed his luck too far is the only thing that keeps julien quiet. there was no controlling the look of triumph on his face, however, once she finally concedes. walking toward the coat rack, julien’s hand reaches out for isla’s jacket before stopping short. his hands lift, palms out in exaggerated innocence, and he shrugs into his own jacket instead. outside, he drifts to her left, strategically hoping this was her non-dominant side in case she decided to swing. still, he stayed a few side-steps from her reach. distant highway sounds and buzzing streetlights are their white noise, and it eventually gnaws away at julien. “so,” he starts, clearing his throat. in his mind, enough time had clearly passed. he could mention the date that he ruined. he glances at her. “back there, that was your…?”

the diamond catches the light just as his knee meets the floor. beckham’s vision, temporarily, splinters with it. for a moment, there’s hardly any sound — just the sharp, blinding flare of that ring. then the room surges forward toward kate all at once, like moon to tide. gasps crest into shrieking cheer. the world narrows to the sight of her left hand flying to her mouth, and that diamond catches light again. he doesn’t remember deciding to move, only that the air had gone viscous. backing from the room slowly, the rear entrance creaked open. cold air floods his lungs and he claws at the already loose collar of his shirt, hoping to slacken an invisible noose. beck leans over the railing, his long arms locked straight, beer bottle dangling between his hands like a small, useless cross. he wonders how he got there. how they got there. beckham knows this train of thought leads nowhere, but he drowns it. eventually, the noise from inside thins, and the door opens and spills a fragment of noise before clicking shut. he feels her before she speaks. her steps, her breath. he doesn’t turn. half-folded over the railing, eyes fixed below, letting her think he’s drunk or wearing the glow of the party terribly. finally, he speaks: “big day, kate.” he swallows hard. pushes himself up right. he’s wearing a grimace, hiding almost nothing. “congratulations.”
