Six is a musical about uplifting women. The core message of the show is that we shouldn’t compare women, that we should be bringing each other up instead of tearing each other down. Six is very well-known for its diverse casting, giving women of color the opportunity to play these historically white women. After all, Six doesn’t really attempt to be historically accurate. It’s more about inspiring today’s women.
However, some areas of the fandom seem to forget this core part of Six’s message. Whether it’s favoring the white actresses over their POC counterparts, holding actresses of color to unfair standards, or not upholding diversity in fan content, several aspects of the Queendom (the name for Six’s fanbase) are, in fact, racist. Please keep in mind that I am a white woman, and I am aware that shades my perspective. These are some experiences and phenomena within the Queendom that have been noted by my friends who are POC, as well as bloggers of color within the fandom.
Six and Its Casting
First up, let’s discuss the show itself. This post by @/six-costume-refs gives a near-comprehensive breakdown of the casting trends in Six. Aragon, Cleves, and Parr are typically played by women of color, while Boleyn, Seymour, and Howard are typically cast with white actresses. This is not to say that actresses of color have never played these queens- Courtney Bowman and Samantha Pauly are actresses of color who have portrayed Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard, respectively.
However, the trend towards white actresses for these characters is overwhelmingly clear. For example, at the moment of this writing, only three women of color have ever played Jane Seymour in the entire history of the show. All of these women were understudies. Until 2020, a woman of color had never been cast as principal Jane Seymour. That actress, Carly Mercedes Dyer, has yet to make her principal debut due to the COVID-19 pandemic closing theaters.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with white actresses portraying Boleyn, Seymour, or Howard. The problem comes when only white actresses portray these characters. It’s no stretch to say that these three queens are the most sympathetic within the text of the show itself. When only white actresses are cast to play these characters, it sends a pretty unpleasant message- that white women are more deserving of sympathy than their POC counterparts. This was certainly not the intention of the writers, but it’s a message that the casting trends have amplified. Six has been good about keeping its casts diverse, but there is still a long way for the show to go.
Many will point to the inspirations behind the queens as justification for these casting trends. Aragon is inspired by Beyoncé; Boleyn is inspired by Avril Lavigne; Seymour is inspired by Adele; Cleves is inspired by Rihanna; Howard is inspired by Ariana Grande; and Parr is inspired by Alicia Keys. People who use the “queenspirations” as justification for Boleyn, Seymour, and Howard being overwhelmingly played by white women will say that since these queens are inspired by white singers, it makes sense to have them played by white actresses. But if that’s the case, then why are these people okay with white women and non-black WOC portraying Catherine of Aragon and Anna of Cleves? The “queenspirations” only seem to matter when they’re justifying why casting for three characters is overwhelmingly white.
Favoring of White Actresses
Now, let’s move on to Six’s fandom. One doesn’t have to look far to find evidence of racism and colorism within the Queendom. For example, this post by @/its-totes-gods-will lists the principal actresses in three casts of Six (Broadway, West End, and UK Tour) by their Instagram followers. The results are upsetting, but not surprising. In both the West End and UK Tour casts, the top three followed queens are all white. In the Broadway cast, the two lighter-skinned actresses are the most followed. While I’m aware that Instagram followers are not entirely related to popularity, the numbers are pretty telling.
Many members of the Queendom will overwhelmingly give more attention and love to the white actresses. For example, Millie O’Connell, who originated the role of Anne Boleyn on the West End, is one of the most popular actresses in the Queendom. There is nothing wrong with loving and admiring Millie- I love her as well. The problem comes when people take their love of Millie to unpleasant, even toxic extremes.
When Millie left the show, her role was taken over by Courtney Bowman. Courtney is a plus-sized Black actress, and when she made her debut as Anne Boleyn, she was met with many hateful comments. People compared her to Millie and made disparaging comments about her weight. It got so bad that Courtney made an Instagram story where she started crying due to all the hate being directed her way. By contrast, when Sophie Isaacs- a white actress -joined the show, she received a bit of hate, but overall was given a much warmer welcome. Andrea Macasaet, who plays Anne Boleyn on Broadway, received similar treatment. Actresses of color are not nearly as well-treated by the Queendom as white actresses, as further exemplified by the next point in this essay.
Holding Actresses of Color to Higher Standards
A little over a year ago, Adrianna Hicks, who plays Catherine of Aragon on Broadway, was found to be following and liking posts by Bethel. Bethel is a church group that is notorious for its anti-LGBTQ+ stance and its support of conversion therapy. When this was discovered, Adrianna was met with outrage. Many queer people, myself included, were hurt by her actions. Adrianna apologized, saying that she didn’t know the posts she liked were homophobic, and unfollowed the account. She has not repeated this behavior.
For the record, I looked at the posts she liked myself. They were deceptive. The images themselves were just vague quotes about faith, and the stuff about conversion therapy was buried at the bottom of a long description. If someone was simply scrolling through Instagram and one of their posts popped up, they could conceivably be led to believe that these posts were about supporting LGBTQ+ people of the Christian faith. People get tricked like that all the time. I, personally, do not believe Adrianna is homophobic. I believe she was simply misled and didn’t look into the account as much as she should have. I understand if other people do not feel the same way, and I do not expect everyone to have my same opinion.
To this day, Adrianna still receives hate for this year-old controversy. When she first posted her apology, people were even putting monkey emojis in the comments of her Instagram post. For the record, racism is never okay, regardless of what a POC has done. If you are racist towards POC you dislike, you are sending the message that only POC who are “acceptable” are deserving of being treated equally.
Compare the fandom’s response to Adrianna’s controversy to, say, Aimie Atkinson. Aimie is a white actress who originated the role of Katherine Howard on the West End. To this day, Aimie has barely posted anything about Black Lives Matter on any of her social media channels. With such a huge following, it is frankly irresponsible that Aimie is not spreading petitions or donation links. She could reach a large audience with her platform, but she chooses not to. This is not like Adrianna’s controversy. Aimie has the ability, at any time, to spread resources to help. But she is choosing not to.
The most Aimie has done on her Instagram is post a black square for #blackouttuesday. And even then, in the comments of that very same post, she promoted her own dance workshop. This suggests that she did not actually know about the meaning of the black square, which was to stop promoting yourself and start promoting Black creators. When she was called out for this, Aimie became defensive. She referred to people calling out her inaction as a “backlash of abuse”, which is wildly inappropriate. Calling someone out for their silence towards racism is not “abuse”.
Yet Aimie received more support from the fandom than Adrianna ever did. The comments of her apology post were overwhelmingly positive, and the few comments I saw criticizing her were met with angry responses from Aimie stans. The message the Queendom sends with this is clear- when a white actress has a controversy, it is swept under the rug and forgiven. When a Black actress has a controversy, she is viciously attacked and met with hateful comments. And I refuse to believe race isn’t a factor in the different responses.
Not Upholding Diversity in Fan Content
Six has an extremely active and dedicated fandom. However, this fandom doesn’t seem extremely committed to upholding diversity in their fan content. When fanart is drawn, it is typically of the white actresses. You can find loads and loads of fanart of Millie O’Connell as Anne Boleyn or Aimie Atkinson as Katherine Howard. When I Googled “Anne Boleyn fanart”, the top results all depicted Anne Boleyn as a white, skinny woman. The same was true for Katherine Howard and Jane Seymour. Dreamcasts (the practice of taking actresses and “casting” them in Six) are also guilty of racial typecasting. In many Instagram dreamcasts, Aragon, Cleves, and Parr are the ones cast with women of color. Boleyn, Howard, and Seymour are often fancasted with white actresses. Considering that dreamcasts hold unlimited potential, there is no excuse for only considering white women for the roles of Boleyn, Seymour, and Howard. Nor is there an excuse for defaulting actresses of color to the roles you’ve “decided” they can play.
Whenever a woman of color is fancasted as Boleyn, Seymour, or Howard, there are almost always several comments saying that they don’t think said actress is “right” for the role. These comments will usually also say that they believe this actress would fit Aragon, Cleves, or Parr better. While this could simply be innocent, the fact that every single dreamcast I have seen of a WOC as Boleyn, Seymour, or Howard has these comments makes me question the motivations behind these words.
In addition to typecasting, many in the fandom are also guilty of racially charged stereotypes in their depictions of the queens. For example, in many fanworks, Aragon is depicted as a sassy, angry, opinionated woman. Considering Aragon is often played by a Black actress, this depiction reeks of the “Sassy Black Woman” stereotype, in which Black women are depicted as too expressive, more harsh, and loud in comparison to their white counterparts. Within the text of the show itself, Aragon is actually not at all sassy. Her song is simply full of (justified) anger towards Henry VIII for kicking her to the curb. By contrast, Katherine Howard has several sarcastic quips in the show. There’s even a lengthy scene in which she “roasts” the other queens. Yet Howard is not depicted as sassy in fanworks. Instead, she is depicted as a soft, innocent, precious little girl. Why is it that the Black woman expressing justified anger is labeled “sassy”, yet a white girl who insults others is labeled “soft” and “innocent”?
The three most popular ships in the Queendom are Parrlyn (Anne Boleyn/Catherine Parr), Katanna (Anna of Cleves/Katherine Howard), and (Catherine of Aragon/Jane Seymour). In many works featuring these ships, particularly in hurt/comfort fics, the queens most commonly played by white women are the ones being comforted by the queens of color. This perpetuates even more harmful ideas- the idea that women of color should act as babysitters and sources of comfort to white women. While there is nothing wrong with couples comforting one another, there is something wrong when it is only ever the WOC comforting the white woman- never the other way around.
If we want to be allies, we need to call out racist behavior when we see it. Support your Queens of color. Analyze your own personal biases. Promote, support, and create diverse fan content. Uplift creators of color within the Six fandom. And most importantly, listen to POC. As a fandom, we have a responsibility to do better.
