Peaches was trapped under a peach tree, right exactly where a long legacy of stripey grey tabby cats have hung out in the garden for many years. We no longer see Dawn there and before him, Sagwah and her daughter Too used to be found in that location often.
Welcome Peaches to the grey tabbycat hangout location! He was neutered, vaccinated and microchipped last week and is now free to live wherever he wants without fathering any more kittens.

Announcing a family of FOUR little kittens abandoned by their mom at the Morris-Jumel Garden. Each is around 1 pound and probably 5-6 weeks old. 3 out of 4 are polydactyl - meaning they have extra toes. The kittens are just learning to eat on their own, but they caught on fast and one day later are chowing down directly from the bowl. Once they get bigger and are confirmed healthy they will be available for adoption.
Cream Puff Memories
Below some pics of Cream Puff, may he rest in peace.
He was originally trapped, neutered, vaccinated and released in 2009.
Once [2016?] had to come inside for a winter while a leg abscess healed.
He was always much happier outside on his own.
And outside especially with his best buddy Harley, who pre-deceased him in 2017
They were a pair of country gentlemen living on the @morrisjumelmansion grounds.
We hope they are together now.
Rest in Peace Dearest Cream Puff
This past week Cream Puff got hit by a car in a tragic accident. After a few tense hours together the M-J Cats Volunteers decided to let him go. Be at peace dearest Cream Puff, so many people loved you over your awesome 15 years as a resident at @morrisjumelmansion grounds.
We buried him right at the location he often could be found, near the shelters in the Southeast corner of the Mansion grounds, overlooking Highbridge Park and beyond.
We will be posting pictures of Cream Puff over the next days. Here’s a start.

Pepper
Pepper doesn’t seem to be in a good mood. He got TNR’d about a year ago down the street but seems to have moved into the M-J Garden Cat Colony.
Skip formerly known as Tugboat East has a home
Named after a similar looking cat who lives on the west coast, the newest cat in the M-J Colony is a tuxedo was named Tugboat East. We got him neutered and he found himself a permanent home where he was named ‘Skip’..
Smudge
Update - we released Smudge into the colony for a few months, and eventually someone adopted him and brought him inside. Have a great life Smudge!
Poor Smudge! This lovable sweet boy became a stray cat after his human did not come home, leaving him alone in the apartment. He meowed and meowed hoping someone would come feed him and annoyed his neighbor who threw him out the window!
We met Smudge, looking lonely and hungry on a rainy Sunday in late February 2022 and trapped him a few days after. Now he’s safe, neutered, vaccinated and looking for a new and better home.
Update, we TNR’d Toast soon after writing this post and he still is incredibly cute and retains his kittenish looks (with an eartip)!
Toast is a light grey tabby tuxedo without an eartip. Most of this cat’s lower half is white, including chest and belly, mask area, legs and end of tail. He has similar colors but different markings than Buddy who has an all grey tabby tail.
Toast has been been hanging around the garden for about a month and needs TNR - which we did soon after posting this.
Seems young and was instantly scared off sitting on this piece of wood by Sandy’s remarkable range of growls; he considers himself king of the colony. Gerald retreated to hide in the neighbor’s back yard.

Thom’s been limping - notice his left front paw is a bit crooked - hope to get him to the vet soon.
Thanks to uptownnuyorasian for the picture of Stubby. He’s an all black cat with a hint of white on his breast area. He has a very short tail, who knows what happened to it. We’ve been trying to trap Stubby all Spring and Summer, but he is an elusive mysterious cat who only shows up in the garden every once in a while. Definitely needs neutering, doesn’t have an eartip.
Here’s an out of focus picture that shows how short his tail is, taken at night on July 15th.
Sandy was the only cat that showed up for dinner while the fireworks were exploding all around. He’s a cool cat.
Trapped Dawn in the garden after leaving the trap for hours, he finally went in after it got dark. He got neutered, all his shots, microchipped and eartipped the next morning. I thought I had noticed another grey tabby hanging around the food bowl, but he’s small and looks very much like the grey tabby girls living in the garden.
One way to distinguish Dawn from the other grey tabbies is that he has a blotch of black fur on his back that’s not so organized in defined stripes along his spine. Now that we know what to look for we notice he’s been coming to eat with the others.
Sandy is a new cat in the garden colony
We’ve heard a few cat fights around in adjacent yards. Now we saw the source today. There’s a new grey tabby around, he’s got a white belly and paws and sure is feisty - picked fights with both Buddy, who is twice his size and Grady-Tate who finally got him to saunter away. Seems that she has moved in and we shall TNR her soon. Here’s some pictures of her looking quite at home in the colony. He has a very creamy colored belly so first we called him Sutlu - which means milky in Turkish. But now his name is Sandy
update - Cat was trapped in the yard down the street where he moved in with some young cats that seem to really like him. Now he’s named Sandy. Neutered, all shots and microchipped on 5/13/21 - but he likes to wander and he’s often in the garden.
Cream Puff seems grumpy today
8/2021 update - Parker was adopted and is loving his forever home.
Parker was found just like this, looking very sad and abandoned inside a carrier in a parking space on St. Nicholas between 162 & 163rd. The woman putting food in his carrier said he had been there for hours and seems like no one was coming for him. So I took him to one of our volunteers who held him until we could take him to an ASPCA truck for neuter and shots. A fellow rescuer offered to take him to the Brooklyn Cat Cafe - here’s a picture of him in his foster home getting ready to be adopted. Good luck to you Parker!
