My AlienStage hot take is that I really don't get the IvanTill JockEmo AU.

Emo Till? 100%, of course, the most natural thing in the world.

What on earth makes Ivan a JOCK, on the other hand, I don't get. I've never seen such an obvious overdramatic goth theatre kid in my life.

I get the inherent appeal of jock X emo, obviously, I just don't see it as a good enough reason to entirely subvert one of their personalities. I get that Ivan being the popular kid is appealing, but a theatre gay being popular for his performances and totally unapproachable otherwise, only for Till to approach him anyway and discover that he's a nerd-ass loser freak is not only very plausible but also way more in character.

I mean. Ivan? A jock? The man whose only known interest is classical literature? The flouncy little gay boy that he is??? The man wearing nothing less than fourteen layers of leather, glitter and capes at every opportunity? Mr. Black Sorrow? Lord Autism himself???

I just don't see it.

Most of the art of it sexualizes and stereotypes the dynamic, and stereotypes Ivantill, making Till submissive and needy and making Ivan a pervert. Most of the art of it is nsfw and runs on the submissive bottom x perverted silly top dynamic and it's so annoying. It also fetishizes both jocks and emos, who are already fetishized enough, and mlm dynamics and flattens a complex ship like Ivantill into a stereotype. Is anyone else low-key tired of getting nonstop complaints about fanfics in the x reader tag? I understand having icks, but my brother in CHRIST you're reading self-insert fics on TUMBLR the MOTHERLAND of cringe. A lot of the people who write here are teens, so why can't we make this a safe space for them to practice writing? They sometimes don't even proofread their shit. And when I write on here I don't use beta readers. I don't even edit or redraft. Most fanfic writers don't. We're in it for the LOVE OF THE GAME. If you're expecting high brow literature, you're in the wrong genre. I'm not saying that to put down fanfiction writers. I care about my work. They care about their work. You can find a lot of beautiful stuff, but to approach EVERY fanfic with these high standards in mind is kinda dumb. It may just be me but I'm getting so many users constantly complaining about cringe. RELAX. Remember where you are. It's NOT that serious. Writers are providing content for free and having fun.
