Bdubs has feelings. and although he's somewhat ashamed he still desires some type of relationship. Becoming friends is important to him, therefore he wants to confirm etho feels the same way. Etho repeatedly tries to avoid the topic however, repeatedly citing Other peoples opinions on what he is and how he's supposed to act. Etho refusing to see himself as a "person" upsets bdubs, because to him etho refusing to see himself as anything other than a fish can't be healthy.

To etho however, he's been stuck in this state for so long, refusing to process his own emotions or even acknowledge the fact he Has emotions, that the concept bdubs is proposing is horrifying to him. To etho, bdubs is forcing his own human identity onto him (which is somewhat true !) and instead of continuing to ignore it the seed of doubt has been planted. That ethos life could in fact have been ruled by emotion rather than instinct this entire time. At the very end of their conversation, despite bdubs efforts to try and apologize for upsetting etho, etho retreats even further emotionally.
