HAIIII so your Hermits of Ga'Hoole au has made me start getting back into Guardians of Ga'hoole! I'm still on the first book and in the middle of it I came up with a terrifying question...
Would "Moon Big" happen in one way or another? would it moon scald the poor lil guys?
Hii!!! Nice to see a fellow gog enjoyer out here in the wild! Hermits of Ga'Hoole is a super self-indulgent au. I def go through on-and-off phases with it but I'm happy to answer questions about it!
"Moon Big" is canon to the Hermits of Ga'Hoole au, and so is moon-blinking and moon-scalding (yay?). As the moon gets bigger, the risk increases! But as long as no one falls asleep in its light, they should be fine... right?
I shant say more because the plot of Hermits of Ga'Hoole has endgame spoilers for Guardians of Ga'Hoole AND its sister series, Wolves of the Beyond. But there is an early scrapped comic in my drafts about an interaction between Mumbo and Grian about the moon that is pretty spoiler free (under a cut just in case):
Mumbo watches the moon (does it look brighter than normal?) outside their shared hollow while Grian is out colliering at a recent wildfire. He is staring at it for so long that he starts to doze off under its shine, but is luckily interrupted by Grian arriving home.
Grian wakes him up (pulling out a few feathers and even shouting at him) then shoos them into the hollow. Mumbo points out what he noticed and is confused when Grian dismisses him. Grian says the moon is not worth watching, and stuff like that is boring anyway.
Mumbo keeps pushing about it and Grian even more firmly asserts that Mumbo needs to forget about the damn moon and do anything else, seriously.
Things start to escalate because Grian is being weird (and rude!) about all of this, but they are interrupted by the rest of Boatem finally arriving. The group had originally planned to do the trip to the Hermits' biannual meeting place together, but Scar, Impulse, and Pearl got held up by the same wildfires Grian was getting coals from.
They all squash into Mumbo and Grian's shared home (which was meant for two owls, not five btw). With an audience, Mumbo voices out loud that he thinks there's something off about the moon (either it's getting brighter or... somehow... it's getting bigger). Scar and Impulse, while not having noticed anything themselves, are pretty curious. Finally, Grian begrudingly suggests that Mumbo bring this up to other Hermits at the meeting, as others who do astronomy and navigation as specialties would have noticed something off.
Behind their heads, Pearl and Grian exchange a loaded glance outside to where, indeed, the moon glows brighter than normal.
Background Context: Evo exists in this universe and takes the narrative place of St. Aggies. For that reason, the knowledge of moon-blinking (and especially moon-scalding) is not common outside the Desert of Kuneer. The only ones with technical knowledge, outside of Evo itself, are the five that escaped (Grian, Pearl, Martyn, Jimmy, and BigB). Out of them, only Martyn (and sometimes Jimmy) are willing to even mention how moon-blinking/scalding works in non-esoteric ways.
But Martyn and Jimmy only show up much later after things have progressed significantly (and a number of Hermits almost moon-blink themselves unknowingly).
