Lately my laptop has been making some technological hypochondria-inducing sounds. Here they are layered on top of each other, with some minor negative feedback so that they interfere with each other.
It's been a while, but here's a new recording. It's a quartet (Saxobone/Rebar/Cymbal and violin bow/neckless guitar and magnet) inspired by the idea of extraterrestrial birdsong/field recordings.
It's been a long-ass time since I posted anything here. And almost two months since I recorded anything... I've been thinking a lot about why I want to make music and whether or not I actually want to make music or just think of myself as someone who makes music. Those videos probably aren't going to happen, but I am going to keep recording shit. Goddamnit.
I've been meaning to get around to making a (series of) video(s) about music theory/philosophy of music since I finished the project. This video came along after I spent a couple weeks thinking about exactly what it has to say. I will be making those videos! I might even convince people that music theory is interesting!
The blog (but not the project) continues!
I've decided to end this 365 project, for a number of reasons. It was becoming a drain on my energy to produce output that wasn't satisfying, and by its very nature was a short-term demand on a process that needs more time to develop. There is a future for this blog though; one that includes bigger projects as well as the small experiments like those here. Expect a video soon(ish). Maybe I'll give it a framework like weekly posts, but I'm feeling anarchistic right now.
[I've decided on "mostly noise" as the new title.]
Okay, here's what's happening.
I might not finish this project. I'm going to keep trying for 365 recordings before January, but they're not gonna come every day. Fuck that. I don't know what I want from this. It's been very disappointing lately, I've had too many expectations, I've been inspired to do things that are quite frankly impossible, I've let this count for too much, and incidentally I've just been depressed. But it's still happening for now.
Day 115: expressivity
Some extremely overdriven vocals and breathing. I know I missed yesterday, and I have an idea of something to make up for it, but I'm not sure this project is something I want to finish. We'll see.
Day 113: processor
The various tones of the food processor in my kitchen as amplified by the pickup.
Day 112: mouthpiece
I wanted to torture a cartoon character today, so here's me and an alto sax mouthpiece.
Day 111: doop doop doop
Messing with the sequencer on the gameboy camera again. Trying to change notes is kinda difficult.

Day 110: BASS
The instrument I used today was not a bass, but the guitar with the unscrewed neck and the magnet. The recording fails to capture the sheer bass massacre of it all. It felt like I was shaking the house down.
Day 109: furnace
The various bassy hums and feedback frequencies of the furnace in my house, as amplified by the pickup. I had to get close enough to a hot pipe without the pickup getting stuck magnetically (which would cause feedback and maybe some melting), without burning myself either.
The Fourier series approximation for the Step Function (or Square Wave) is 1/n * Sin(n*pi*x)/L for odd values of n. Here is the expansion, plotted up to n=49. Below are the individual waves and above is the progression of their added values!
It is impossible for me to resist reblogging fourier transforms.
Day 108: I don't know what to call this one.
A field recording of some spring rain on my porch's metal roof. With the addition of some manual manipulation. Just cupping my palm around the mic changes the pitch (color?) of the noise.
Day 107: No trespassing, hunting or fishing.
I was looking through the garage for potential sound objects and found this no trespassing sign. Nice wobbly tones.
Day 106: April showers/spring peepers
Another field recording! This is just after some on-and-off storm activity where it's lightly sprinkling and everything is drippy and the spring peepers are singing.
