Tip Jar
Transitions between the Wheel (For the four seasons)
This is from my personal practice with observing the wheel of the year and my focus on each transition between the sabbats. I honor the current seasons in between. Each transition has it’s importance to self care and managing the home and garden. I will probably add to this later cause some paragraphs I wrote I feel like are a bit vague. Some of these transitions are not meant to be 100% literal and static but I feel like they are good areas to focus on for that moment in the year.
Yule->Imbolc Resting
During the thick of winter when it’s too cold to do anything and always dark, it’s the perfect moment in the year to rest. The focus is on relaxing, taking extra time to sleep and care for the body especially to not get sick. Winter is also ‘spa’ season because the air is so dry and harsh it’s a good time to soak in hot baths and scrub away dead skin and moisturize with protective lotion. Do not try to make new plans, yet sit home, rest and reflect.
Imbolc -> Ostara Cleansing
When winter thaws it’s a great time to clean the home and prepare for spring. Personally, I also like to do a body cleanse since I tend to eat a lot of processed (yet delicious ;-;) foods all year round. This also makes up for all the heavy foods I’ve been eating since Summer (all the BBQs) to Winter comfort foods. As I clean the home and get rid of stuff that has accumulated over the year, I clean the body. Also the focus is on cleaning the home as well. Breathing in the same air, especially if its full of dust, is really unhealthy and it’s good as the days are getting a little warmer to open up the windows for a few minutes to allow in fresh air to circulate. This is also the time of year I throw out old furniture, accumulated things and rearrange furniture in the room as well.
Ostara -> Beltane Sowing
Spring is a great time to germinate sprouts along with other seeds and clean the backyard or garden to grow plants. If you like to compost it’s a time to start mixing in the vegetable/fruit/plant scraps with the soil. Spring is also a great time to sow bigger changes in life as well. Something about the warm new season brings an air of flirtatiousness and ‘socialness’ that makes it perfect for making new friends or finding a partner. (Probably because people can finally come out of hibernation). It’s also a fantastic time to work on your image and portfolio and apply for long term jobs that begin in the summer or fall. Spring is the season for new beginnings and putting long term plans into action.
Beltane -> Litha Growing
A tradition I like to do on Beltane is repotting of plants and gardening. Repotting plants is a tradition I try to focus on every year because it’s very easy for house plants to die due to dead soil. Plus it makes the inside of the house super vibrant and lively to have fresh new soil in pots. From this point to summer solstice is the point of growth. Growth in the garden but also growth of personal goals. May and June feel like hectic months where there are so many events and opportunities to advance your work or change your social scene, that if I am not personally progressing, I focus all of my attention on my growth.
Litha -> Lughnasadh Thriving
Its the heat of summer! It’s time to get out and feel the intense hot energy and use its power to focus on goals and networking! Where I am there’s usually an exciting event every week where it’s an opportunity to make more connections and meet more friends but also since its warm and nature is so vibrant it’s time to take some days to relax and get away to enjoy the heat and life of nature. Go to the beach, go hiking, swim in a lake, sleep under the stars. Be active since the efforts will pay off.
Lughnasadh -> Mabon Reaping
This is the time you earn what you’ve sowed both literally and metaphorically. If you have a garden its the time it will start giving back. If you are an active goer of a farmers market you will notice how beautifully abundant the stands are. If in Spring you’ve sent out tons of job applications, and in Summer got the job you’ve wanted and worked hard, then by now you should start seeing some results. If there are no results being seen it’s a time for reflection and re-strategizing. There is a second chance in this time to start again before the cold and the holiday season bulldozes through.
Mabon -> Samhain Harvesting/Gathering
This is the time to gather and harvest. Usually family tends to gather now since it’s the holiday season. There’s not much other than gathering to be done since family and holidays are bombarding you from all sides. Also there is an abundance of food. This is great to store for the next transition which is
Samhain -> Yule Preparation
This is the moment to prepare for winter. My warddrobe completely changes here, I take up knitting projects that were abandoned last Imbolc, and I store food and herbs for the winter to use. Also making preserves from things in the garden or hand knitting clothes make great presents for the winter holidays. This is also a time to prepare the garden for hibernation. Take in potted plants, harvest the last of the herbs and food (that are not potted). Make sure plants you do not want to die have a place to chill in the house.
Be Selfish With Your Witchcraft
I want you to be selfish with your witchcraft.
Cast spells for good luck and fortune.
Collect all those herbs and crystals that you want.
Incorporate witchcraft into everything you do.
Take time out of your day to work on your grimoire.
Bless yourself before you bless anyone else.
Play around with your magic and figure out what you like.
Take a witchy bath and do some self care.
Have fun. Let yourself have the time of your life. You deserve to love your craft.
Grounded and Centered
Some of you might think these two concepts mean the same thing, but they actually have two different meanings. Both of them are going to be really important to you and your craft.
Grounding is your connection with the Earth. If you don’t feel grounded, you might be feeling something like this:
-Lost, for no reason
-Lonely, even if you’re not alone
-Empty inside, but have no idea why
-Longing for something, but you don’t know what
-Tired, listless, and lacking energy
-Uninvolved, like you’re running on auto-pilot
-Apathetic
You don’t need to be feeling all or most of these to need grounding. In fact, it’s good practice to ground AND center yourself before and after every magickal doing. (Spells, Rituals, Ceremonies)
Here are a few of the ways that you can ground yourself:
-Eat something natural and organic like fruits and vegetables.
-Use crystals to carry. This will cleanse and charge you.
Smokey quartz, kyanite, black tourmaline.
-Work with or be around herbs like sage or sandalwood.
-INCENSE
-Bathe. Add salts and herbs if you wish. Lavender and sage are great options.
-Stand or lie naked on the earth. Think “I’m not in nature, I am nature”.
-Listen to or play witchy music. Drums is a great option. Feel the Earth’s heartbeat.
-Perform meditative exercises. (Yoga, karate, etc)
Centering is your connection with yourself. If you’re not feeling centered, that connection is lost. You may be experiencing this:
-Reckless dreams, nightmares, tossing, frequent wakes
-Overwhelmed by uncontrollable emotions
-Self-hatred, self-loathing, self-apathy
-Racing thoughts, lost concentration, unfocused
-Dizziness, feeling zoned-out
-Forgetful of important dates and things
If you do not ground and center yourself before and after magickal workings, it can take all the power out of your spell, even if you have crazy strong intention. Not only that, but you will leave the space feeling zapped of energy.
Here are a few ways you can center yourself:
-Eat chocolate
-Focus on your physical senses
-Savor something
sunset, tea, flower smells, etc.
-Do something mundane that cleans your area
-Do something creative
sing, dance, draw, etc
-Cry. It’s very cleansing.
-Laugh
-Do meditative exercise
These things may seem unimportant and chore-like, but it’s going to improve your magick, life, and inner self. Find other things that makes you feel grounded and centered. You’ll feel better for it.

Shadow Work 30 Day Challenge - Anger Intro
The first emotion we will be focusing on for this series will be the emotion of anger. This is an introduction post to the emotion of anger and what it means.
What is anger?
Noun; a strong feeling of annoyance, displeasure, or hostility.
Verb; fill (someone) with anger; provoke anger in.
What Anger is NOT
The emotion of anger itself is not a mental illness. Everybody experiences anger, however I should add that certain mental illnesses do cause an emphasis of the emotion.
Anger is not anything to disown or feel bad about experiencing. I really want to place emphasis on anger being a natural, human emotion. Human emotions are meant to be felt, dealt with, worked through, and integrated into our being. Disowning this aspect of our being can be very harmful. It is not the emotion itself to feel bad about or disown or question, it’s the way in which you display and manage the emotion that should be taken into consideration.
What Causes Anger?
This is a tough question to answer because the reality is that anything can cause anger, sometimes there is no cause, and the anger trigger highly varies by each individual.
Like the Limp Bizkit song “Break Stuff”, some days just are not your day. Some days you just wake up pissed off, everything is annoying you, and you just have little patience for life. In this sense, sometimes there is no identifiable cause for people to be angry, and that is completely okay and valid.
I have to really emphasize that anger triggers HIGHLY vary by each individual. Some people have anger triggers that others would view as “irrational,” but to that individual, their trigger is their trigger, that’s their thing, and if it’s a trigger to them it should be respected as such regardless. Keep this in mind throughout this post; anger triggers highly vary by individual, and no trigger is invalid.
1. Stress: Stress is a feeling of emotional or physical tension. Anger is one way people react to stress.
2. Situational/Environmental: Having poor or weak boundaries, or having others cross your boundaries, feeling ignored/invisible/unacknowledged/unappreciated, financial/social/family struggles, growing up in an angry environment, etc.
3. Psychological: Certain mental illnesses classify anger as a symptom, lack of sleep, anxiety, sensory overload, difficulty controlling emotions, bottling up too much angry emotions, and trauma.
4. Physiological: Certain bodily illnesses can cause anger such as thyroid or hormone imbalances. Feeling bodily pain, and many other dysfunctions of the body can cause a person to feel angry.
Other:
Substitute/Distraction: Sometimes people make themselves feel angry, whether on purpose or not, so they can avoid feeling an emotion that may be more painful to them. Example: Somebody found out their spouse is cheating on them, when they confront their spouse, they outwardly react with anger, meanwhile the underlying emotion being substituted for anger is actually guilt.
Anger as a distraction emotion can be due to an aspect of not wanting to focus on the self, although that is obviously not the only reason, for some it could be wanting to avoid feeling or coming across as vulnerable amongst many other reasons. For some, it’s a lot easier to direct their feelings of pain or betrayal as anger onto other people, because honestly, who wants to feel pain? Example: Uncle J. broke his ankle, instead of displaying outward emotions of pain, he yells, “Shit! God Damnit! What the Fuck!” and won’t let anybody help him to the hospital, displaying anger to people who try to help him. This describes using anger as a distraction to his pain because anger tends to raise your adrenaline levels, therefore reducing sensations felt, and as a distraction to not seem vulnerable to others.
Who Experiences Anger?
The short answer is that everybody experiences anger. Anger is a human emotion, even some of the animal kingdom experiences anger. The degree to which anger is felt and experienced by each individual varies. Some experience anger as their primary emotion, meanwhile others would have to endure a lot of annoyance and/or triggering things to become angry.
Is Anger Necessary? The Good & Bad Sides to Anger.
Absolutely! My own, semi-professional opinion is that anger is one of the most necessary and useful emotions that humans have. Anger has a negative reputation rooted deeply into society, culture, and religion, but there are many upsides to the emotion.
Anger can push us to do many things, both good and bad.
The Good:
Thinking about primal, evolutionary humans, anger is an emotion that allows for survival. We all have a fight, flight, or freeze response to us. “Fight” is a response with an underlying feeling of anger. It’s rooted into our DNA as a survival response to keep us vigilant, sharp, and strong to fight off what needs to be fought off.
It motivates us to find solutions to problems and drives us to work further on our goals. Example being if somebody makes you so angry that you just long for the day where you can show them how well you’re doing without them.
It protects what we believe in and makes us aware of what we feel is unjust. Revolutions are caused by anger the underlying emotion. People may feel outraged, sad, burdened, hostile… those are feelings of the emotion anger.
When used properly and in the right situation (such as a fight or flight scenario), anger can encourage cooperation and “scare off the perpetrator”. Anger can be very scary looking to others. So when used in a situation where somebody wishes you harm, it can be very beneficial.
It motivates us and makes us optimistic. Think about the last time you were REALLY mad… Many people note feelings of being invincible, like they’re on top of the world, they can accomplish anything. When managed and displayed in healthy ways, anger can bring great feelings of optimism and motivation.
Anger is energizing. Angry music is highly energetic.
The Bad:
Consistent, bottled up feelings of anger can cause many health problems such as high blood pressure, adrenal fatigue, tachycardia, and so on.
Unhealthy displays of anger can ruin your reputation, relationships, career, and wellbeing.
Anger can cause arrests. Unhealthy displays of anger can cause you to physically lash out at others, or become quite loud, and can cause people to be put under arrest.
Hurting yourself or others.
Types of Anger
Chronic: When anger occurs for a prolonged period of time, feels hard to manage, and/or becomes bottled up. This can be a symptom of a mental illness, although that is not always the case, some just have a more difficult time managing this emotion, and that is okay.
Passive: Passive anger is not displayed in an apparent way, that’s why it’s called passive aggression. This can be displayed in many ways, often in emotionally harmful ways towards others. It’s displayed in an indirect way for many reasons.
Volatile: This is often aggressive anger. Anger that causes people to display outward aggression, harm to self or others, substance abuse, or damage to things or people.
Overwhelmed: Overwhelmed anger is a reaction of feeling as though you have more things on your plate than you can manage. This can also be a reaction of sensory overload or stress.
Self-Inflicted: Self-inflicted anger is anger that you display in a substitutional sort of way. Perhaps you feel guilty, therefore you feel angry at yourself.
Resentful: Anger that occurs out of resentment, dislike, or hostility towards another person or thing.
Symptoms of Anger
Fight or Flight Symptoms - Racing heart, sweating, large pupils, shaking/trembling, feeling hot (specifically in the face/chest), clenching your teeth, etc.
Feeling like you need to get away from a situation at all costs
Feelings of irritation, sadness, guilt, anxiety, and/or as if you might not be able to control your actions or words (aka., feeling like you might act out verbally or physically)
A sudden loss of sense of humor
Speaking sarcastically, loudly/yelling, or feeling unable to speak in fear you may say something harsh or abusive.
Feeling like you need to yell, cry, or feel a physical sensation (some may pull their hair, punch something, etc.)
When Anger Becomes A Problem
Anger is a healthy emotion to have, but there are points where anger does become a problem for some and therapy or anger management techniques may be necessary.
Anger is persistently directed inwards. Depressing thoughts, negative self-talk, denying yourself basic pleasures and happiness, and a feeling of hatred towards yourself for unknown reasons.
Verbally or physically attacking things or other people in an uncontrollable and unreasonable way. While punching a pillow or punching bag is a healthy way to manage anger, punching other people or harmful objects like walls is not. Yelling in the privacy of your own car is healthy, yelling and verbally attacking others is not.
You are uncontrollably sarcastic, degrading, shaming, sulking, or giving others the silent treatment.
You avoid certain things because you know they make you feel uncontrollable anger.

Disposing of Spell Materials - My Digital Grimoire Series
Tips for People in the Broom Closet
Cook with intention:
Stir your coffee or soups or anything else thats stirrable. If you live in the Northern Hemisphere, stir in a clockwise direction to bring in your intentions and counterclockwise to banish or get rid of something. And vice versa if you live in the Southern Hemisphere.
You can also draw sigils on your food or utensils. For example, draw sigils on dough with flour. Or, draw a sigil on a pot with oil before heating the pan up.
You can use specific herbs and seasonings to match your intention.
Plants. Plants everywhere.
Plants that correspond to protection can go by your doorway to protect the house or in your bedroom to protect you from nightmares.
Certain potted plants can bring in different intentions. You can plant lavender, for example, to bring more peace into your life.
Feel free to bury crystals into your pots to further enhance magical properties. This also hides your crystals and keeps suspicion at bay.
Cleaning
You can concoct a mixture that has a certain intention and energy to it to clean your home. This is great for protection spells.
You can sweep your home with a besom or you can use an everyday plastic broom to be more inconspicuous. The supplies don't really matter that much, what matters is your intent.
Sounds, like clapping or singing, can also be used to cleanse a space or item.
Burying items in or surrounding items with dirt, salt, lemon juice, vinegar, etc. can be a method to cleanse.
Art
You can paint sigils into your artwork before blending.
Make a doll to act as a poppet. These can be as witchy as you want. You can make a simple plushie and utilize it as a poppet. Or buy a plushie or doll from a store. Just be sure to cleanse it first!
You can use knot magic to make friendship bracelets, necklaces, or anklets.
You can add a crystal to diy jewelry.
You can also use sticker magic in journals, planners (digital ones work too!), or on labels. I have a post on sticker magic here.
Color magic
You can utilize color magic in your clothes.
You can use color magic in everyday household items, like a candle. I have a post that delves into candle magic (with tips for people in the broom closet!) You can find it here.
Note: if you can't use candles, you can seal spells with knot magic, you can use led candles, etc. Here are some alternatives to candle magic.
Candy magic
You can use different flavors and colors and types of candy in your magic. Here are a few posts on candy magic (x, x, x).
Altars
You can use a travel altar in an altoids box or a shoebox. You can find an example of a smaller altar below.
Source: OfSmokeandSoil
You can decorate your desk, dresser or even your bedside table. You can use color magic with candles to match your intention. You can place seasonal flowers and other items to match the sabbots or other holidays. You can also honor a deity with a personal item, such as a candle or piece of artwork or other imagery.
To represent the elements you can use seashells, a glass of water, a candle, stones, a feather, etc.
Magic spells
Feel free to write a sigil, spell, intention on a piece of paper and then bury it, crumple it up, or burn it to cast it.
Nonwitchy practices
Meditation is great to manifest your wishes, connect with spirits and/or deities.
You can use visualization to help manifest intentions.
You can collect items, like rocks or stones. You can paint these and use color magic. Or you can use them as worry stones.
Witchy tools alternatives
To replace tarot cards with regular playing cards. Here is a link on how to read them, but you can also use your own intuition. Or, you can use digital tarot cards (x). There are also YouTube videos that create spreads and do readings. While youtube readings don't resonate or work for me, you may want to give them a try. These two channels here and here have a plethora of readings.
Do online research or download ebooks to replace physical books. You can also do some research in a library.
For a grimoire of book of shadows, you can use a personal diary, school notebook, or a digital document (on one note, google docs/classroom, notion or even a social media app like tumblr). A great thing about the diary is that some come with a lock. For the longest time, I used a diary with a lock from the dollar store. Also if it is a digital version, you can log out of the account. Or, if your parents check your social media, create two accounts. One for your grimoire or bos and one that appears more mundane like a study account, a meme account, etc.
There are also digital and physical moon calenders, which track the moon phases, meanings, etc.
For runes, you can inscribe rocks with invisible ink. If it is suspicious for you to just have a bowl of rocks lying around, feel free to use them in decoration in something like this:

Why You Should Keep Track of the Tarot Cards You Pull
People will often notice patterns to the cards they pull - you’ll notice that certain cards come up more often. This tends to be based on a feeling though, rather than any real data about which cards you’ve pulled - and the real data may surprise you.
I’ve kept track of the cards I’ve pulled in my single card readings over the past three months, and here are some things I’ve noticed:
I pull one card more frequently than any other card. In my case, that card is The Magician. It’s really useful to know - not just suspect - that one card turns up constantly for me.
Some cards don’t actually appear as frequently as I think they do. I recently pulled the Nine of Pentacles and thought, “Again?? Why do I pull this card so much??” but when I look at the actual data… I’ve pulled other cards way more frequently. I think it’s a form of the Baader-Meinhof effect - a card can stick in your brain for some reason and you remember it as appearing more often than it actually does!
There are interesting things about the cards that I don’t pull. In three months, these Major Arcana cards have never come up at all: The Emperor and The Devil. I can look at the data of what archetypes don’t appear in my life and draw some interesting conclusions. I’ve also not drawn a single court card (page, knight, queen, or king) from the suit of swords - swords tend to deal with conflict, which I maybe have less of during this particular time in my life
I can identify which suit and which numbered cards appear the most and the least in my readings. While the totals of Swords, Wands, Cups, and Pentacles I pull are pretty close to even, Wands eke out a little bit higher total than the others. Cups and Pentacles are tied, with Swords coming in last. If I didn’t have this data, I’d probably assume I pull Swords the most - because they leave the biggest impact on me when I do pull them! Of the numbered cards: I pull Aces of any suit the most, and Twos of any suit the least. This makes for some interesting patterns: The Magician is sort of the “Ace” of the Major Arcana, as well. Aces are about a very singular willpower whereas Twos are about partnership and duality. Through this pattern I can identify the focus the cards have on my life at this particular point in time.
I pull Major Arcana cards more than is statistically likely. The Major Arcana makes up 28% of the deck, but 39% of my pulls. The Major Arcana are more associated with long-term messages, and so my life may have more long-term type changes needing to be made during this period.
This is a quick guide to how you might interpret some of the overall themes you notice: Minor Arcana: temporary, easily changed, daily life, current situation Major Arcana: long term, archetypes, themes, life lessons, current lesson Wands: spirituality, inspiration, determination, strength, intuition, creativity, ambition and expansion; energy, motivation and passion. Cups: love, feelings, relationships and connection; emotions, intuition and creativity Swords: action, change, force, power, oppression, ambition, courage and conflict; thoughts, and words Pentacles: work, business, trade, property, money and other material possessions Aces: new beginnings, news, movement in a positive direction Twos: duality, connection Threes: creation, creativity, growth, action Fours: stability, structure Fives: tension, conflict, challenge Sixes: relaxation, harmony, reevaluation Sevens: mystery, disruption, adjustment Eights: action, movement, growth, change Nines: contemplation, reflection, looking to the next step Tens: conclusion, culmination, new beginnings, complexity Pages: youth, vitality, fascination, learning, and focus Knights: adventure, energy, missions, conviction, willfulness, recklessness Queens: curiosity, openness, expressiveness, creativity, flexibility Kings: authority, leadership, expertise, mastery, inflexibility

🔔 BELLS IN WITCHCRAFT 🔔
Bells might just be the earliest form of superstitious practise that I remember. My baba attached three sakura-patterned suzu bells on my schoolbag as a kid, purportedly for good luck and protection from evil spirits – and Japan is far from the only place to have associated bells and bellringing with mystic practise. They’ve been used worldwide to ward off evil and carry messages – and in a more metaphysical sense, sound is the movement of energy through substance. Sounds have the potential to work powerful magic.
Here are some of the ways I’ve found utilising bells to be helpful to my craft. While I’m more likely to use traditional suzu type bells, your own background, path and culture will likely have its own types of bells – and as ever, bells can be ornate antiques or they can be a bottle cap in a tin can, as long as they’re used with intent.
GETTING STARTED
🔔 As with so much of the craft, if you’re new to the witching bell, it’s a matter of exploration and experimentation. Get a “feel” for what works for you and the specific bell you’re using.
🔔 It’s good practise to ensure that the bell itself is cleansed, warded and protected – you don’t want anything nasty tapping into that power. All witching tools can do as much harm as good, intentional or accidental.
🔔 A good way to begin incorporating bells into your craft is infuse them into any typical ritual that you’re comfortable with, or even just a prayer or moment of contemplation at your altar if you have one.
🔔 Give the bell a soft ring while focusing on the energy it’ll ripple and move, try to track the movements it creates and what it touches. The tone it’s sending out. The most primal and versatile use of the bell – and what many of the below come down to – is simply another manner of physically channelling energy, giving it shape and direction.
PROTECTION
🔔 “Passive” bells such as windchimes or small bells attached to belongings you don’t want disturbed are a starting point. They will scare off some forms of spirit all by themselves, especially if appropriately blessed, charmed or enchanted. Or cursed.
🔔 Gently tolling can draw energy into a ward or circle you are forming and enforce its protective properties, or for a simple cleanse, letting the sound travel to every corner of the area you are protecting. It’s a little more “cutting” than a smoke or incense cleansing, which I view as more “gentle” forms of cleansing. Both have their uses.
🔔 Harder tolling is, in my opinion, one of the most powerful ways in which to enforce a banishing – however, it’s best to you know what you’re doing with the bell before you go bashing it about.
DISCERNMENT
🔔 Bells can have quite the effect on your perception and awareness. Ringing and then stopping, listening to the silence left in its wake, can bring you new perceptions or make things you’d previously missed obvious. Let it attune your mind and senses to something new, whether that’s in your thoughts or something with a little more presence. Visualise travelling with the sound, taking heed of the energies it touches and disturbs. Take note of the echoes – you’ll learn what they mean with experience.
🔔 A set of windchimes can let you know if something is passing through or if there’s some unusual energy afoot – and, yes, it may also just be letting you know that it’s a particularly breezy day, but that’s witchcraft for you.
CONJURING
🔔 This can be as simple as calling good energies to witching tools, spell jars, tarot decks, crystals, altars and shrines, your favourite teddy bar, anything at all.
🔔 With spirit work, it can truly help to magnify your “calling”. This can range from gently bringing your latest offering to the attention of your friendly neighbourhood house spirit – all the way to trying to catch the attention of something more. Be mindful, however. As I said, I consider bells pretty powerful tools and a call that’s too loud is not good spirit work practise for the spirit worker’s own sake. It can really help coax something out of hiding if you’re gentle with it, though.
COMMUNING
🔔 Some use bells to mark the beginning and end of a ritual, and I’ve read that in Wiccan practise an altar bell can be used to invoke the Goddess, although as a non-Wiccan, I’ll welcome corrections on that if I’m wrong.
🔔 In my experience, very simple forms of communication via bell work a lot better than anything too complex – “come here” and “stay away” have already been covered, and other than that they can serve as greetings or signals of a start or end of some practise or ritual, the opening or closing of a door, etc.
🔔 They can also serve as a warning or a litmus test regarding spirits, a signalling of your presence and awareness, lack of fear, or willingness to defend – but be prepared to deal with whatever responses these garner.
BINDING
🔔 Bindings are where you most often see that famous (clockwise) circular motion of the bell, embodying the meaning of the spell. This can be a simple binding to seal a spell or charm or enchantment, or a spirit-binding.
🔔 Personally, spirit-binding is something I do as little as possible simply due to my beliefs holding the autonomy of spirits in very high regard. However, sometimes situations arise that call for it, and I’m aware that not all bindings are unwilling. Far from it – and some spirits are dangerous when unbound.
🔔 As an animist (believing that all things, including inanimate objects, contain a spirit of their own), I consider gently nudging a spirit back into its physical form a sort of semi-binding, and that can be useful.
I’ll leave you all with a note that I am an urban apartment-dwelling witch through and through, so I understand that we can’t all be jangling away at all hours. I myself have a glass windchime in my front window that makes a distinct but muted sound when disturbed by passers-through, and highly recommend wooden ones also. I also only use my small and relatively quiet suzu bell for my crafting – one given to me by my baba herself.
Feel free to add any of your own findings, and happy tolling.
