West Virginia is especially wonderful during October. If you are traveling to see us this Sunday in @charlestonwv we highly recommend taking the road less traveled. #gotowv http://ift.tt/1jjrdv8
Come visit. Seriously.
Garden & Gun x Travel South // West Virginia
West Virginia surpassed all of my expectations. My wife, Kimberly, and I spent the better half of a week traveling across the state, all while documenting our experience for Garden & Gun x Travel South. You can check out this feature in full in the upcoming October/November issue of Garden & Gun magazine. Here are a few of our highlights from our time in West Virginia.
We started our trip in Charleston, West Virginia by grabbing brunch at a local diner followed by some exploring around their historic downtown.
After day turned to night we were excited to attend a live taping of NPR’s very own Mountain Stage featuring performances by some of our favorite artists - Phox, Field Report and Bahamas.
Day two began like any other day… with a tour around a creepy, old lunatic asylum in Weston, West Virginia - the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum.
After leaving Weston we decided to drive towards Fayetteville but it wouldn’t be a true road trip without a ticket, right?
Our drive, and day two, concluded with us zip-lining with Adventures on the Gorge in Lansing followed by the most unbelievable sunset overlooking the New River Gorge Bridge.
Day three started with some hiking through Seneca Rocks.
The rain called our hike to an early close so we decided to head to our next destination, Thomas, West Virginia. Home to a perfect, little “bed & cocktail”.
The next morning, now day four of our journey, we drove just a few minutes down the road to checkout Blackwater Falls.
And then, still on an empty stomach, we hurried up the road to Sirianni’s Pizza Cafe in Davis before heading onward towards Morgantown.
At this point we were running a bit ahead of schedule so we decided to stop and go white water rafting on the Cheat River with Blackwater Outdoor Adventures.
After finally arriving at Morgantown, the final stop of our trip, we capped off our wonderful getaway with a private tour and tasting at one of West Virginia’s finest micro breweries, Chestnut Brew Works.
Thank you, Garden & Gun, for setting up such a fun trip for Kimberly and I and for opening my eyes about West Virginia. We can’t wait to go back!
hazel and alice — Mommy Please Stay Home With Me
A rare solo vocal from Alice Gerrard.
Lots of interpretations for this lyric. Is mommy a worn-out single mom, too poor to afford a babysitter/medical care? Is she a heartless party girl? Or, is the “party” she attends her real work (If it is, they couldn’t come out and say so back in the day)?
Is her situation some combination of all three, or something else altogether?
Any way you look at it, this is surely some hardcore bluegrass.
WV- where Blackwater Falls and Bill Bryson meet. #gotowv (at Blackwater Falls State Park)
We are throwing a party and you are invited!
WV-native and Grammy winning musician Tim O'Brien took time to speak with West Virginia Public Broadcasting at Carnegie Hall in Lewisburg earlier this year.
We're going to need a bit more Maggie Hammons over here.
Up for a weekend road trip? The Mountain Music Trail comes with it’s very own live soundtrack. Explore the possibilities at mountainmusictrail.com
Jesse Milnes & Emily Miller - Sally Anne Johnson
Part of a series called Deep End Sessions, which I just found out about. It’s an old-time residency based north of LA. Jesse and Emily are/were part of the Sweetback Sisters, who you might know from their Christmas Sing-a-long shows.
If you dig this, there’s a whole set of them playing together, along with a CD they recorded during their time on the ranch.
Straight out of Elkins, West Virginia.
West Virginia morning. It’s 7:41. #gotowv

Just another day at Augusta Heritage Festival.
Pickin' in Parsons knows how to welcome folks.
