Kaneki’s putting his jacket on and getting ready to walk out into the autumn chill when that dove comes in. for a moment, everything locks up--kaneki’s palms start sweating, and he can feel his heart hammering in his throat. would the dove recognise him? could the dove recognise him? granted, his mask covered up so much of his face, and what was showing when he wore the mask, he left covered up now, but--but oh no, he had spoken, what if the dove knew his voice--

So he squeaks softly and ducks his head down low, pressing himself to the nearest corner, watching for a moment as he almost hears the whisper of rize in his ear, to attack, to get this thing out of his place, if he’s so strong, go on, kaneki--

Oh god, is he watching? He probably is; everybody probably is; kaneki can feel it, he’s making such a scene and--he bolts to the door, accidentally running into the man, and stuttering out a rather loud, “i-i’m sorry!” and skidding to a stop.

“My my, if it isn’t Kaneki!” She says excitedly and makes her way closer to him, tilting her head as a small smile shows through the bandages covering her face. “It’s been far too long. I’d thought you’d forgotten about me!”

He steps back a few paces, trying to stay out of eto’s way, if only from fear, rather than any sense of deference to her. in addition, he’s hoping to keep the distance; while he knows eto is dangerous, kaneki won’t back down. he will kill her--he will destroy those whom threaten his place to belong.

So he glares from behind his mask, and he grunts out, “eto. of course i hadn’t forgotten about you; it’s never an intelligent idea to forget all of one’s adversaries.”

He says, as if his memory isn’t poor enough.

Oh no--it’s eto. she who was one of those most dangerous ghouls, who kaneki had put together a very long time ago was the most likely candidate for the one-eyed king. whatever she’s doing here, it can’t be good.

So kaneki backs up a bit, his kagune coming out automatically as he hopes for the best--that eto will be merciful today, or that she won’t have noticed him. after all, if she’s here, it’s not an incorrect assumption that other members of aogiri will be here, and their group is small--they won’t win in a head-on fight.
