Movie Noob - Star Trek: Into Darkness

Alright ya'lls, Movie Noob number who-knows-what-number.  This is focused on Star Trek: Into Darkness.  To be completely honest I started this movie on Netflix, like, a year ago and I just never got around to finishing it.  I honestly started watching it and just couldn't convince myself to finish it.  I started and it was all just too intense.  I stopped watching it because my brain couldn't handle frikin' Khan.  And I had a hard time that my Benedict was the bad guy.  I finally finished it today in an attempt to get it off my Netflix list.  So glad I finished it!!!  It was magnificent!  Despite my iffy beginning, I did rather enjoy it in the end.  I think I probably give it an 8.5 with a bonus point for all my favorite actors that happened to accrue into this film.  So, an 8.5 +1

Movie Noob - Spiderman (2002)

Okay.  Nope.  Nope nope nope.  The way people freak out over Spiderman I was expecting more.  This movie... it just felt like a Saturday morning cartoon... a badly made one at that.  The actors felt too little kiddish and, well, I don't know what else put me off, but it really was awful... Not a fan.  The actors were babies, the only one I saw grow at all through the story was Harry, and even then not a whole ton.  Sigh...

It does however stick pretty well to the actual Spiderman story so I have to give it points for that...

Movie Noob - X-Men

This movie.  Oh Heavens.  Not at all what I was expecting, but in a good way.  I like what actually happened much better than what I was expecting.

I really hate movies where it feels like we're just trying to meet "word count" by causing problem after problem to obstruct the victory of the good guys.  This movie only had one moment where I felt we were just trying for one more problem.  Other than that it just continued to move!  And each problem wasn't just a rehashing of the previous problem.  Each issue was a genuinely new issue, separate from the other ways they obstructed the pathway to victory.

I also love the relationship between Wolverine and Rogue.  The fact that she is so dear to him, so quickly, and not in a romantic matter makes me very happy.  Many would say he cared about her too much, too quickly but I disagree.  I could go into my reasons for this feeling, but that's not why we're here.  Suffice it to say I adore the big brother/little sister feel of it:)

However it was not quite what I've come to expect from Marvel movies.  It fell just a little below what I want in a superhero movie.  But that is probably my fault.  I started with the modern movies, with modern technology.  Had I watched this when it first came out I probably would have loved it as much as I obsess over Iron Man and The Hulk.

Movie Noob - Chicago

I have always been a fan of the music from this show.  The Original Broadway Cast recording of Chicago was one of the first musical soundtracks I ever owned.  Despite my love of the music, however, I never watched the movie they made in 2002.  The fact that they wear the skimpy lingerie in Cell  Block Tango (incidentally my favorite song) always kept me away.  But the other day I was asked by a director friend of mine if I would ever consider doing Chicago and I said I loved it but I didn’t think I’d ever do it because of the costumes.  He looked at me kinda funny and said that was a shame because I would be perfect.  That planted the seed, after that I was listening to my iPod and Cell Block Tango came on and I belted it.  It was then that I decided I would watch it and see what it was like.  So glad I did!

The dancing in this show!!! Oh man!!! I love it!  I’m a dancer and the first dance number, “All That Jazz” was enough to convince me I had to do this show at some point.  I can’t describe how much I love the dancing in this movie!  It’s beautiful, gorgeous, and simply the best combination of genres of dance I’ve seen in a long time!

Also, the amazing cinematography.  I love the way the camera flips scenes, between what’s happening on the stage and what it is currently mimicking in “real life”.  For example the entire “Hungarian Disappearing Act”  and things like in “All That Jazz”.  It’s  so epic and a marvelous choice for this show.

I may not be the biggest fan of the plot line, but that’s okay because, for me at least, the musical numbers far out-way the disappointing plot line!  I may purchase this movie simply to watch the dances over and over again.

Movie Noob - The Book Thief

Remember when this book was all the rage?  Well, even though I was an avid reader I never got very far into the book.  I didn’t understand why my mom liked it so much, why everyone was talking about it.  Now I get it.

I don’t know how close the book is to the movie but the movie was brilliant.  It is one of two movies/books that have ever shown the Germans as human.  At least that I have seen.  And they do it so well in this movie.  I cried, not just cried but I did that thing where you want to cry but you’re so sad you can’t and your throat just hurts and hurts.

Two things and then I’ll let you go.  First the color palette for this movie was astounding.  I don’t know why these choices were made but it was perfect for the feel of the movie, the only bright colors being the red of the Nazi flag and the yellow of the Jewish stars.  Other than that only important things were colorful, like Liezel’s diary, or the painting Max painted on the wall.

On the other side, I don’t think they did enough to show Liezel and Ruidi getting older.  I couldn’t tell.  There was no evidence but for hair style and clothing choices.  I’m not a professional, so I don’t know how to better it exactly, but their faces stayed baby faces the whole time….

Movie Noob - Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Opening sequence… just that!!!  It sets us up for an excellent movie and you are in no way disappointed.  It’s hilarious and I love how even though they barely know each other by the time Steve leaves they still have made a great connection that you come to expect from Steve.

I went into the movie knowing who the Winter Soldier was and other bits of the movie because I’m constantly on Tumblr.  And I am a religious watcher of Marvel: Agents of Shield.  Spoilers!  Anyway, I spent so much of my time flipping out because Steve was fighting Bucky and Steve had to win, but then he’d be unwittingly harming his best friend and that was not okay, but they couldn’t let the Winter Soldier win the fight….

All in all my boyfriend said me and my reactions were more fun to watch than the movie, though I’m sure he walked away with many bruises from my gripping, smacking, and all out war on him in the midst of my freak outs over what was happening in the movie.

Sooooooo much love for this show!!  Score equals a 10!!!!

Movie Noob - TFiOS (from a while back)

Just saw TFiOS!!!!!!!!! It was sooooo perfect!! Never has a movie been so perfect with the book! Never have I been so content with a movie. Never. It doesn’t matter that I knew what was coming, it was like I was living it all over again. The story became real, the characters became real people! SO PERFECT!!! For the first time ever Princess Bride has been kicked out of it’s first place spot, this spot of honor now belongs to The Fault in Our Stars!!!!!!!!!!! EVERYONE NEEDS TO SEE THIS MOVIE!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH JOHN GREEN FOR THIS PERFECT MAGNIFICENT BOOK AND FOR YOUR WORK IN BRINGING THIS MAGIC TO THE SILVER SCREEN!!!!!!!!!!!

Movie Noob - Easy A

For all who know me, I’m the slowest of slow at watching movies, unless I’m a super dedicated fan of the books.  For example, as I posted previously, I just watched the Breakfast Club for the first time earlier this year.

Anyway, I finally watched Easy A, which my friends are constantly raving over and not I get why!  HOORAH!!!!!  Not only is the story great, and the telling amazing, the acting hilarious, the family dynamic epic, and the Breakfast Club and 20 other 80s movies included, but it is a modern telling of the Scarlet Letter, one of my favorite books ever!!!!!  AND IT TALKS ABOUT THE ORIGINAL MOVIE BEING BETTER THAN THE REMAKE!!! HOORAY!!

I give this movie a straight up 9.  I wonder why I even bother with my ratings when I love just about everything I come across… weird… I feel like all I ever post are 9s.

Definitely on one of my favorite movies list!

Movie Noob - The Breakfast Club (epic fail)

So I’ve been scrolling through my old Tumblr posts in an attempt to find what I wrote about seeing “The Breakfast Club” for the first time so I could tag it as a Movie Noob moment and this is literally all I found…

Movie Noob - Divergent

Okay, so I saw TFiOS before this movie and though I knew that both Hazel and Augustus were in Divergent, you cannot imagine the loop I was thrown for to hear Hazel Grace explaining the factions in the opening voice over.  SO MUCH BRAIN CONFUSION!  Like, I knew it was just the same actress, but without having Triss’s character and face (especially the hair) in front of me with the voice all I could see was a pixie cut, canula-ed face of my favorite character ever.

Also, the dude who plays Four bares a striking resemblence to one of my friends, in facial structure and scruff, but much sexier and I love his voice sooooooo much!

All in all I really enjoyed this movie and found myself freaking out over Triss passing the test and Four and her fighting and stuff even though I’ve read the books and know exactly what happens.  Not exactly to the book and some parts that were missing disappointed me, but I totally understand the limitations of book-to-movie transitions.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being Eragon and 10 being TFiOS, I would place this movie around a 9, maybe an 8.5.  I think they did a really good job on turning a book that is written so much in the brain of the main character into a movie that didn’t have one of those gosh-forsaken eternal self-narrating-monologue happening in voice over the entire movie.

Very glad I watched it:)
