December 2015: Movies for A Year Recap
DECEMBER 2015 was the twelfth and final month of my movie a day challenge. I canât believe I actually did it! So here it is in no particular order:
BEST: Brooklyn (2015), Spotlight (2015), A Christmas Story (1983)
WORST: Naomi and Elyâs No Kiss List (2015), The Spirit of Christmas (2015), Beverly Hills Christmas (2015)
Hallmarkâs Best: Because of the Countdown to Christmas taking over the entire month, Hallmarkâs Best was Crown for Christmas (2015)
Keep a look for my next two posts, one of which will feature all the movies for the entire year and the other which will have the best of 2015! Thank you to everyone for following and reading!
Days 350-365: December 16-31, 2015
On the Twelfth Day of Christmas (2015)
Starring Brooke Nevin, Robin Dunne, and Dani Kind
Maggie must get home for Christmas and gets a ride home from Mitch, an upperclassman. While on the road, their trip is stopped due to bad weather and Mitch gives her 12 gifts of Christmas along the way home. Years later, Mitch ends up in her hometown as the local DJ and no spirit of Christmas. Maggie takes Mitchâs Christmas future into her own hands and send him 12 Secret Santa challenges just as he had all those years ago. I love the concept behind this movie by its spends far too much time on the setup and earlier gifts leading to a breeze through of the last five gifts.
The Flight Before Christmas (2015)
Starring Mayim Bialik and Ryan McPartlin
Two strangers in dead end relationships must share a room at a bed-and-breakfast when the snow delays their flights home in Montana on Christmas Eve. This is an opposites attract kind of movie where two people who couldn't irritate each other more fall for each other making one of the most awkward couple ever.
A Gift Wrapped Christmas (2015)
Starring Meredith Hagner, Travis Milne, and Anna Van Hooft
Gwen, the perfect personal shopperâs world is rocked when her newest client, Charlie, a workaholic oblivious single father refuses to take her advice  Luckily for Gwen, she is able to unfreeze his heart and inspire him in the true spirit of Christmas. This movie features an appearance by 7th Heaven alum, Beverley Mitchell and is the most entertaining of the personal shopper Christmas movies.
Ricki and the Flash (2015)
Starring Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, and Mamie Gummer
Diablo Coby helms this music themed film where Ricki (Streep) must return to her family after abandoning them for years when her daughter played by her actual daughter becomes divorced and depressed. Unfortunately, her children donât welcome her with open arms as old wounds cut deep. Full of quips and songs, Ricki and the Flash is an enjoyable guilty pleasure type movie.
National Lampoonâs Christmas Vacation (1989)
Starring Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, and Juliette Lewis
Clark Griswold has fantastical plans for Christmas to be perfect but everything blows up when the extended family arrives. Other than the Holiday hi jinx, this movieâs best moments feature the snooty neighbors played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Nicholas Guest (best known for playing the Headmaster on the short lived but guilty pleasure worthy USA High). Who can forget the 2 set of actors to play the Griswold children, The Big Bang Theoryâs Johnny Galecki and my favorite bitchy TV detective from Secret and Lies, Juliette Lewis. Two words: christmas classic. I canât believe it took me this long to watch it.
My One Christmas Wish (2015)
Starring Amber Riley, Matreya Fedor, and Priscilla Faia
Based on a true story, a hardworking young woman played by Gleeâs Amber Riley who has no family becomes a counselor for a group of trouble girls showing them the true spirit of Christmas. She places an ad on Craigslist of a family for Christmas and receives amazing responses which gives her the idea of having a party so all these people can meet and finds that she had the family all along. This is a beautifully touching real life story that inspires.
Christmasland (2015)
Starring Nikki Deloach, Luke Macfarlane, Richard Karn and Maureen McCormick
An inheritance story as a city girl inherits her beloved Auntâs Christmas tree farm that she used to visit as a child. Just like Northpole: Open for Christmas, she wants to flip the place and get back to her job as soon as possible. But Christmas Land is irresistible to resist along with the town and a certain lawyer Tucker, who will do anything to help her. Itâs a story thatâs been told just this season that does nothing for me except make me want to visit a Christmasy town like that.
A Christmas Kiss (2011)
Starring Elisabeth RÜhm, Laura Breckenridge, and Brendan Fehr
The first stranger kiss in an elevator comes to us via ion television and A Christmas Kiss where a assistant in disguise kisses her bossâs boyfriend and they fall in love while her boss forces her to decorate his house for Christmas. Ironic that his girlfriend is the one whoâs controlling nature that brings them together. An enjoyable slightly romantic Christmas tale with nods to Holiday traditions that none of us understand and a bunch of laughs.
The Spirit of Christmas (2015)
Starring Jen Lilley, Thomas Beaudoin, and Kati Salowsky
A young realtor must visit a house her boss needs to sell and determine while all her appraisers refuse to finish the job. She gets more than what she bargained for when she runs into a ghost that has been cursed into haunting the house for the 12 days prior to Christmas. When I saw this plot summary, my first thought was wtf, that is random but like all of Lifetimeâs 2015 Holidayâs movies, I let myself believe the world. This was until the movieâs final moments when the ghost is set free from the curse and comes back to the land of the living to be with the realtor. Thatâs just not possible even in a fantasy world.
Christmas Crush aka Holiday High School Reunion (2012)
Starring Rachel Boston, Jonathan Bennett, Marilu Henner and Harry Hamlin
Once voted most likely to succeed, Georgia has little to celebrate as her high school reunion approaches. Her bright side is that she can finally win back her high school boyfriend, Craig who's as dumb as a bag of rocks. Georgia makes a fool of herself in several amusing ways before she discovers her true love and childhood best friend, Ben Oliver. Itâs always the best friend.
A Christmas Story (1983)
Starring Peter Billingsley, Melinda Dillon, and Darren McGavinÂ
Who could forget this iconic film with the leg lamp, âyouâll shoot your eye out, kidâ, and never stick your tongue to a metal pole in Winter. This is a true Christmas classic that I watch every year and taught me many important lessons as it did most kids.
Get Hard (2015)
Starring Will Ferrell, Kevin Hart, and Alison Brie
James King (Ferrell) was framed for fraud and about to go off San Quentin. He wants to make sure that he survives which is where Darnell Lewis (Kevin Hart) comes in to toughen him up. Iâve never watched a Kevin Hart movie in my life and watched this one to see what the fuss was about. The truth being that this movie as a small amount of amusing moments and is definitely not one of Ferrellâs best or I hope an accurate depiction of Hartâs.
Joy (2015)
Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, and Bradley Cooper
Joy tells a glamorized mix of the true and fictionalized life story of Joy Mangano, the inventor of the Miracle Mop featuring incredibles highs like when she sells almost 100,000 mops and lows like when she is forced by her own parents to give up and file bankruptcy. That is a truly messed up family. Jennifer Lawrence is young to be playing Joy but the feistiness of her performance (mostly revealed in the trailer) is deserving of its praise. The rest of the movie however feels rather muddled at time with occasional moments of clarity.
A Christmas Melody (2015)
Starring Lacey Chabert, Brennan Elliot, Mariah Carey and Kathy Najimy
The undisputed âQueen of Hallmarkâ, Lacey Chabert returns for this Christmas coming home story along with her former co-star/fiance in another Hallmark movie, Brennan Elliot (best known to Hallmark fans as sleazball Warren Saggett). To top of the crazy, letâs add Mariah Carey is her former classmate and bitchy PTA president, who may not have been acting the entire time as a ominous glow follows her around. The best thing about this movie is Fina Strazza, the child star who steals the movie from its four larger stars in every scene sheâs it. And as in all of these movies, the children are always way smarter than the adults.
Wish Upon A Christmas (2015)
Starring Larisa Oleynik, Aaron Ashmore, and Linda Darlow
A woman whose job it is to travel around and fire people must return to her childhood home and make cuts to the Christmas Ornament factory which her old boyfriend owns. Talk about awkward. The two of them along with his son must believe in Christmas Magic to save the factory in this holiday movie featuring a disguised Santa Claus who crash lands to make the sonâs wish come true and reunite the lovers.Â
Last Chance for Christmas (2015)
Starring Hilarie Burton, Gabriel Hogan, and Tim Matheson
Prancer is injured and canât fly on Christmas, so John must travel to a failing Reindeer farm to buy a special reindeer to save Christmas. This movie best featuring is Johnâs awkward conversations with everyone outside the North Pole since the only people he talked to for 15 years are elves and Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Mr and Mrs. Claus have the best lines trying to intimidate John into confidence to get the reindeer.
The Big Short (2015)
Starring Christian Bale, Steve Carell, and Ryan Gosling
Four men predict our most recent housing crisis and take on the big banks for causing it to happen. Similar to other films slated as Oscar frontrunners, The Big Short boasts high profile talent with actual knowledge of financial jargon and jabs at the big banks that we wished we had thought of.
Days 335-349: December 1-15, 2015
Get ready for December which is filled with lots of Christmas movies as those are one of my favorite parts of the holiday and check back at the end of the month for my yearly recap!
Crown for Christmas (2015)
Starring Danica McKellar, Rupert Penry-Jones, and Ellie Botterill
In this whirlwind holiday story, Allie takes a job as the governess to a princess of Europe over the holidays. This is a fantastic role of our Winnie Cooper actress, Danica McKeller. This movie does leave me with several questions. How does a fired maid become a governess for a princess? Who still has those? What are the qualifications? Once I got past all the obvious suspension of reality, I actually enjoyed this movie.
Once Upon A Holiday (2015)
Starring Briana Evigan and Paul Campbell
In yet another movie about princesses of small countries, Princess Katie (Evian) is overwhelmed with the job and escapes her entourage to experience Christmas like when she was a kid with her parents. She meets Jack (Campbell) a local home restoration expert that takes her into his love and his heart right when she needs it to have perhaps her best Christmas ever. The thing this movie did absolutely right was to make the audience hate Ross, the reporter trying to expose Katieâs true identity regardless of who got hurt.
Angels in the Snow (2015)
Starring Kristy Swanson, Chris Potter, and Colin Lawrence
A family in disarray travels to a cabin the father built for Christmas to rekindle their family. It takes a family that truly loves each other arriving in the middle of a snowstorm looking for shelter to help them realize what true Christmas spirit and love is. This movie features UPâs signature miraculous faith lifting and the most adorable little girl who never stops believing.
happythankyoumoreplease (2010)
Starring Josh Radnor, Malin Akerman, and Zoe KazanÂ
Written and directed by HIMYMâs Josh Radnor, happythankyoumoreplease presents a movie about figuring out love and acceptance. At times disturbing, this movie at its core is heartfelt but often overanalyzing.
Merry Kissmas (2015)
Starring Karissa Lee Staples, Brant Daugherty, and David O'Donnell
An chance encounter in a stopped elevator results in Kayla rethinking her current relationship and Dustin realizing who he loves. Ion television network loves movies about chance meetings in elevators at Christmas. In fact, this was the third movie on that day with the same basic plot. Need I say more about it, I donât think so.
Just in Time for Christmas (2015)
Starring Eloise Mumford, Michael Stahl-David, William Shatner and Christopher Lloyd
A professor of psychology is offered the job of a lifetime and must choose between her job or her love life. William Shatner as the coachman sends her on a journey to see what would happen if she took the job in the christmas carol style film in the Hallmark Hall of Fame collection. The concept and talent behind this film are top notch but the movie spends far too much time on the job route.
Christmas Magic (2011)
Starring Lindy Booth, Paul McGillion, and Derek McGrath
Carrie Blackford (Booth) worked as a successful event planner in NYC until she is killed in a car accident during a snowstorm. In order for Carrie to move on to heaven, she is assigned to guide a widowed, restaurant owner, Scott Walker, (McGillion) to turn his life and restaurant back on track. The only problem for her was that Scott is resistant to any change and to take risks because of his daughter Abby. In this movie unlike other Angel stories, Carrie gets more than just her wings.
Charlie St. Cloud (2010)
Starring Zac Efron, Kim Basinger, and Charlie TahanÂ
Charlie is happy go lucky until his brother, Sam dies in a car crash that he miraculously survives. Even with a bright future as a sailer, Charlie decides to stay in his hometown as the caretaker for the local cemetery so we can still see the ghost of her brother and keep the promise of playing ball with him everyday that plagues him daily. His life finally has meaning again when he remeets a former rival and is the only one who can find her when she gets lost in a storm. I never realized how much religious/faith undertone this movie had until just now. Also check out Dave Franco before we really knew who he was.Â
Elf (2003)
Starring Will Ferrell, Zooey Deschanel, James Caan, and Bob Newhart
Elf is a holiday classic that I watch every year. Despite how many times I have watched it, it is still hilarious every time I watch it for different reasons due to Will Ferrellâs effortless characterization of Buddy the Elf and his eccentric nature supported by fabulous supporting characters played by Zooey Deschanel, James Caan, and Bob Newhart. This movie is a moment struck by lightning that can't be recreated as it is far more intelligently written than it seems.
Beverly Hills Christmas (2015)
Starring Ravin Spangler, Donna Spangler, Brandon Tyler Russell and Dean Cain
Ravin, a spoiled teen needs an intervention when her mother dies and she becomes the worst version of herself which shows her mother the true error of her ways. This is an angel gets its wings kind of movie with still more intrigue coming from its supporting characters specifically Jerry.
The Christmas Gift (2015)
Starring Michelle Trachtenberg, Sterling Sulieman, and Rick Fox
A reporter on the rise looking for her next great story finds children spreading the spirit of Christmas to the elderly that are being forced out of their facility by a developer. During her search, she finds the gifter of a secret santa gift that made her want to be a writer and falls in love with him on her journey for the story. While it follows one of the the same old stories, The Christmas Gift is surprisingly refreshing and entertaining and not just because it features Rick Fox.
Becoming Santa (2015)
Starring Laura Bell Bundy, Jesse Hutch, and Tony Cavalero
Connor (Jesse Hutch) finally finds the woman that he wants to marry. His only problem is that her parents are Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus and when he marries her that he will become the next Santa Claus. Heâs got the toy making down but struggles with everything else as her childhood friend sleazy Jack Frost accomplishes each task with no effort. Hating Jack Frost was my favorite part of this movie. The fictional reality created in this film actually kinda made me wish Santa was real.
Brooklyn (2015)
Starring Saoirse Ronan, Emory Cohen, and Domhnall Gleeson
Saoirse Ronan plays Eilis, a young Irish woman who travels to America more specifically Brooklyn where she falls in love with an young Italian-American man. Her performance is completely deserving of her accolades and nominations. Itâs a movie that is long in length than most but it doesn't waste 1 minute without adding to Eilisâs story and journey.
Debbie Macomberâs Dashing Through the Snow (2015)
Starring Meghan Ory, Andrew W. Walker, and Enid-Raye Adams
After being stranded at an airport in the middle of nowhere, Ashley Harrison accepts a ride from Dash who rented the very last car. Little does Ashley know but Dash was sent to investigate her after she gets placed on a no fly list. Unfortunately for Dash, he falls for her and must plead her innocence to the crazy agents who are convinced she's a terrorist threat.
Spotlight (2015)
Starring Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, and Rachel McAdams
A retelling of how the Spotlight team from The Boston Globe uncovered widespread child molestation by priests and the Catholic Churchâs cover up in Boston. I remember when this story hit the papers and this movie and accurately stayed true to how the information was released. Its a fantastic film to due not only to the relevant subject matter but also because of its ensemble cast that builds this story just as its inspiration did. This movie is a must see film for this yearâs award season for film lovers and news lovers.
Naomi and Elyâs No Kiss List (2015)
Starring Victoria Justice, Pierson Fode, and Matthew Daddario
Naomi and Elyâs No Kiss List is based on the YA Novel of the same name by David Leviathan and Rachel Cohn best known for their previous effort also made in a film, Nick and Norahâs Infinite Playlist. Naomi and Ely grew up together and have loved each other platonically their whole lives To keep their friendship as strong as ever they make up a "No Kiss List" of people who neither of them are allowed to go after. Their relationship is tested when Ely falls in love with Naomiâs ex-boyfriend Bruce 1 and he loves him back leaving Naomi alone. Fortunately for them, their platonic love prevails over all and they abandon the âNo Kiss Listâ as they have both found who they were looking for. This film did not stand up to the book which told Naomi and Elyâs stories from their perspectives while the film mushed their stories into one unsuccessfully.
November 2015: Movies for A Year Recap
NOVEMBER 2015 was the eleventh month of my movie a day challenge. Itâs almost a month late but here goes nothing! So here it is in no particular order:
BEST: The Martian (2015), Easy A (2010), Dope (2015), Love and Mercy (2015)
WORST: Sheâs Funny That Way (2015), Christmas Detour (2015), Charming Christmas (2015)
Hallmarkâs Best: Iâm Not Ready for Christmas (2015)
See you at the end of year for the best of December and my yearly recap!
Days 320-334: November 16-30, 2015
Christmas Incorporated (2015)
Starring Shenae Grimes-Beech, Steve Lund, and Ron LeaÂ
A wealthy heir to a toy company must decide whether to close a small town toy factory that keeps the town afloat. His new assistant who's hired under a mistaken identity helps this scrooge to find the true spirit of christmas. Its a typical Christmas tale of someone overcome with work and no christmas spirit uniting with someone who's basically the ghost of christmas present. So in closing, there was nothing particularly special about this movie.
A Dog Walkerâs Christmas Tale (2015)
Starring Jonathan Bennett, Lexi Giovagnoli, and Dina Meyer
Luce Lockhart is forced to take a job for the holidays when her parents cut her off. She ends up becoming the dog walker for rich local developer's dog, who plans to tear down the dog park to put in a salon. On the job, she meets Dean, who is trying to stop the plans to demolish the park but showing Luce the history behind the park and ultimately wins over her heart and the park. Heartwarming story where the true spirit of Christmas is discovered through true giving in the most hooky way.
The Art of Getting By (2011)
Starring Freddie Highmore, Emma Roberts, and Michael Angarano
For a break from all things Christmas, I present the following. Loner George (Freddie Highmore) befriends Sally (Emma Roberts), a popular girl who goes him someone and something to love instead of walking through life asleep. They transform each other into the people that they are supposed to be. Interesting story concept that does not follow through with its promises.
Love and Mercy (2014)
Starring John Cusack, Paul Dano, and Elizabeth Banks
A biographic film depicting the life of the Beach Boys frontman, Brian Wilson as he creates the famous and revolutionary album, Pet Sounds and being misdiagnosed by Dr. Eugene Landy played by the manically by Paul Giamatti. Brian Wilson is played authentically by Paul Dano and John Cusack as we learn the real story behind one of musicâs brilliant minds. I definitely recommend checking out this movie.
Sheâs Funny That Way (2014)
Starring Imogen Poots, Owen Wilson, and Jennifer Aniston
Attempting to show how small a world theater is, a playwrightâs play becomes the site of a love triangle between his wife, her former lover and a new actress who used to be a call girl. Only in the theatre would this be a remote possibility but even for me, this movie and its story fell flat.Â
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)
Starring Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, and Steve Carell
This movie chronicles the ridiculous life of news anchor Ron Burgundy and his news team as a woman anchor comes and steals the show. At first glance, this movie was one of the stupidest things Iâd ever seen but in its ridiculous dialogue and story comes some of the most hilarious and original lines and a revived interest in the song âAfternoon Delightâ.
North Pole: Open for Christmas (2015)
Starring Lori Loughlin, Bailee Madison, and Dermot Mulroney
Mackenzie (Loughlin) is tied to her career when she inherits her auntâs in she used to visit as a child. Knowing nothing about running an inn, Mackenzie wants to fix and flip it quick until Santaâs best elf Clementine played by the bubbly Bailee Madison comes to the rescue to rediscover the meaning of Christmas and bring the inn back to life just in time to save Christmas. A delightful example of Hallmark Countdown to Christmas at its best and a wonderful sequel to last yearâs Northpole.
Murder She Baked: A Plum Pudding Mystery (2015)
Starring Alison Sweeney, Cameron Mathison, and Barbara Niven
Hannah Swensen is metaling in solving crimes involving her customers as she bakes up a storm for the holidays as a local Christmas tree lot owner is murdered. Meanwhile, Hannahâs mother is pushing her to date as she contemplates her feelings for a certain police detective who's cases she sticks her nose into. Great second film in an emerging Hallmark Movies and Mysteries movie series that returns on promises of the first film and makes fans look forward to the third installment in January.
Iâm Not Ready for Christmas (2015)
Starring Alicia Witt, George Stults, and Brigid Brannagh
Itâs a Pinocchio story as Holly's niece wishes that Holly stops making promises she canât keep and cannot tell a lie. world is turned upside down when her niece's wish to Santa Claus comes true and she cannot tell a lie. Holly is thrown for a loop as her nieceâs wish comes true, which sends her career and love life into chaos. Her truth serum sets her life back on course with the help of our favorite Stults brother from 7th Heaven. This movie follows a similar formula but its truth serum storyline sets it apart from others in the season.Â
Merry Matrimony (2015)
Starring Jessica Lowndes, Christopher Russell, and Jennifer Gibson
A fashion advertiser must create the perfect Christmas wedding for a holiday magazine spread. Her one problem is that her unrequited love for her photographer partner who was her ex-boyfriend. Tricky situation for this loosely inspired holiday film that has far less drama than advertised.
The Overnight (2015)
Starring Adam Scott, Taylor Schilling, and Jason Schwartzman
A new couple and their child arrive in Los Angeles and meet another couple with a child of the same age who has lived in the area for awhile. They set up an overnight playdate with this couple which turns out to be much more than they expected. It is unpredictably funny with nuanced performances by all.
12 Days of Christmas (2015)
Starring Katrina Law, Aaron O'Connell, and Donna MillsÂ
A busy man Marc, who has abandoned his family for his job hires a struggling artist/personal shopper, Anna to pick out the perfect gifts for his family. Only she gives him the perfect gift of all, love! Adorably predictable movie that did nothing for me except to make me want to be a personal shopper.
Christmas Detour (2015)
Starring Candace Cameron Bure, Paul Greene, and Sarah StrangeÂ
An anxious bride (Bure) is struggling to get to her fiancĂŠ for Christmas when all plans are grounded and she must travel with a broken-hearted cute guy and a happily married couple to get to NYC in time. The detour opens her eyes to what she really wants and thats a real love for the ages. Candice Cameron Bureâs holiday offering is predictable at best and definitely not one of her best Hallmark efforts.
The Night Before (2015)
Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogan and Anthony Mackie
These three friends have one final Christmas Eve adventure for their friend who lost his parents before Christmas several years ago. Truthly just like Anchorman, I wanted to hate this movie as the trailer made it look terrible. It turned out to be much more surprising and amusing than I could have imagined mainly due to the performance of Michael Shannon.Â
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 (2015)
Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson
The final installment of the Hunger Games trilogy sends Katniss against President Snow and the capital until there is nothing left really for either of them. While this series is better than most of the rest of the YA adaptations made recently, this film was entirely too long for the story it was telling and focused to heavily on unimportant moments especially for the final film in a series.
Days 305-319: November 1-15, 2015
 Trading Places (1983)
Starring Eddie Murphy, Dan Aykroyd, and Ralph Bellamy
A weird and sick social experiment in which a entitled rich man (Dan Ackroyd) is defamed by his employers and replaced by a con man (Eddie Murphy). Itâs a totally twisted concept with hilarious consequences including Winthrope befriending a prostitute played by Jamie Lee Curtis. Definitely an enjoyable ride and something that would be beneficial to many young people who donât know the value of a dollar.
âTis the Season for Love (2015)
Starring Sarah Lancaster, and Brendan Penny
A small town girl with dreams of being a famous actress moves to New York and returns to her hometown to realize that what she needed all along was the guy she left behind. Itâs a delightfully predictable movie in which a person finds what they truly need at Christmas.
Goosebumps (2015)
Starring Jack Black, Dylan Minnette, and Odeya Rush
This movie combines all the Goosebumps books and their monsters I loved and was terrified of as a child and rolled them into an epic ride. Despite Jack Black looking nothing like R.L Stine and playing him not as he is irl but as a cartoonish goofy character, his portrayal made sense in the Goosebumps world that the movie created.Â
Canât Hardly Wait (1998)
Starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ethan Embry, and Charlie KorsmoÂ
Featuring the above plus a slew of other actors who are now famous, Canât Hardly Wait turned 17 years old this year and some of its actors as well as fans want to see what happened to the class of â98 after graduation. This movie epitomizes the struggles of being a senior and figuring out your life. Everytime I rewatch this movie, I catch an additional joke or cameo, which makes it a classic of the 90â˛s teen comedy genre for me.
The Babysitterâs Club (1995)
Starring Schuyler Fisk, Bre Blair, Larisa Oleynik and Rachael Leigh Cook
Based on the best selling novels by Ann M. Martin, 7 junior high school girls, Kristi, Stacey, Dawn, Claudia, Mary Anne, Jessi and Mallory turn their babysitting business into a summer camp for kids while growing up themselves. As a lover of the books, this movie brought on just the right amount of nostalgia for the novels, and adolescent drama.
Across the Universe (2007)
Starring Evan Rachel Wood, Jim Sturgess, and Joe Anderson
Effortlessly weaving together the music of The Beatles to tell the stories of young people on the verge of the beginning of the rest of their lives in the 1960â˛s. Itâs a beautifully tragically confusing story that takes you on a journey across their universe.
Ice Sculpture Christmas (2015)
Starring David Alpay and Rachel Boston
Callie returns home after culinary school to work as a dishwasher at the club where her dad is the manager. She runs into her childhood friend David (Alpay) who enters her into a club's annual Christmas ice sculpting competition against her boss without her permission. His mistake helps her find lost love and her passion behind why she loved cooking and ice sculpting. This was a beautifully told story of inspiration and finding your way in life with a holiday twist.
Charming Christmas (2015)
Starring Julie Benz, David Sutcliffe, and Daniel DeSanto
Itâs the family tradition that a Rossman woman must plays Mrs Claus at her family's department store over Christmas, this year it is Meredithâs turn. She reluctantly agrees to do it for her parents to consider a franchising opportunity but what she finds is her own Mr. Claus. Predictable with its best moments featuring the rest of the staff and the interworking of the store.
The Martian (2015)
Starring Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig
During a mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after he is lost in a storm and left behind. The Martian tells Markâs journey to stay alive as he cultivated food and find an unbelievable way to escape and return to earth. Itâs a beautiful movie about his struggle to survive and is one of my favorite movies of this year so far.Â
Christmas Trade (2015)
Starring William Baldwin, Denise Richards, Michael Campion and Tom Arnold
A young boy and his father must switch places just days before Christmas in order for his father to learn the true meaning of Christmas and family that he lost so many Christmasâs ago when his wife died. Itâs Christmas Freaky Friday!
Easy A (2010)
Starring Emma Stone, Amanda Bynes, and Penn Badgley
Olive (Emma Stone) starts a rumor that she has slept with a guy in college to elevate her social status but it all backfires when she is labelled by her peers with the Scarlet A. She survives the torture by realizing her love for Todd (Penn Badgley) and his mutual admiration of her. But perhaps by favorite element of this film is Oliveâs parents played eccentrically by Patricia Clarkson and Stanley Tucci who are the only ones who put Oliveâs situation into real perspective.Â
Dope (2015)
Starring Shameik Moore, Tony Revolori, and Kersey Clemons
Malcolm and his friends are used to being geeks obsessed with 90â˛s hip hop but donât really fit that category until they are invited to a underground birthday party for a local gang leader that turns their lives upside down. This movie turns our perspective of who people actually are versus who they seem to be on its head. I recommend checking out this movie for Malcolmâs transformative journey.
Bend It Like Beckham (2002)
Starring Parminder Nagra, Keira Knightley, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers
A young girlâs (Parminder Nagra) love of soccer and David Beckham convince her to join an English womenâs soccer league with a male coach (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) despite her family and cultureâs complete unacceptance of her dreams. Bend It Like Beckham introduces Indian culture/music and Keira Knightly to American audiences. What else can we you ask for except to say the British always one up the Americans.
Charlie Bartlett (2007)
Starring Anton Yelchin, Robert Downey Jr., and Hope Davis
Charlie trying to avoid his own problems becomes the psychiatrist for his entire school. The weird thing is that he actually helps people including tough guy Murphy Bivens (Tyler Hilton) and messed up alcoholic dad/principal (Robert Downey Jr.) to Susan (Kat Dennings). This movie is a weird collection of poignant moments, and awkward laughs that somehow works.
Enchanted (2007)
Starring Amy Adams, Susan Sarandon, and James Marsden
A princess to be Giselle (Amy Adams) is banished by the evil queen to New York where she is rescued by ironically a charming divorce lawyer (Patrick Dempsey). There is nothing not to like about this movie which combines animation, songs by Alan Menken, Idina Menzel, McDreamy and an unfathomable story that somehow makes sense.
The End of the Tour (2015)
Starring Jason Segel, Jesse Eisenberg, and Anna Chlumsky
Rolling Stone reporter David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) interviews David Foster Wallace (Jason Segel) after the publication of his acclaimed novel, Infinite Jest as he finishes the last few stops of his book tour. It is a thought provoking film that reveals the uncensored thoughts/experiences of one of our most unique writers. The truth is despite this movies excellent ratings, I went into it with very low expectations, which were met with a significantly better film with solid performances by both Jesse Eisenberg and Jason Segel.
October 2015:Â Movies for A Year Challenge Recap
OCTOBER 2015 was the tenth month of my movie a day challenge. Itâs almost a month late but here goes nothing! So here it is in no particular order: BEST: The Goonies (1985), The Wedding Singer (1998), Back to the Future (1985), Moonrise Kingdom (2012) and Edward Scissorhands (1990)
WORST: 6 Years (2015), Hits (2014), and Harvest Moon (2015) Hallmarkâs Best: Signed Sealed Delivered: The Impossible Dream (2015) and October Kiss (2015) See you at the end of November!
Days 292-304: October 19-31, 2015
October Kiss (2015)
Starring Ashley Williams and Sam Jaeger
Poppy Summerly (Ashley Williams) canât commit to anything in her life until her sister gets her a unexpected job as a nanny for Ryan (Parenthoodâs Sam Jaeger), a workaholic single dad who needs a reality check. What makes this movie work more than other ones is that their chemistry works and the story feels more universal.
The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993)
Starring Anjelica Huston, Raul Julia, and Christopher Lloyd
A classic set of movies that always remind me of Halloween and are on my must watch list. My favorite of the two is Addams Family Values as it places the Wednesday and Pugsley into the normal world in which they donât fit in. I catch different jokes each time I watch it.
Jesse Stone: Lost in Paradise (2015)
Starring Tom Selleck, Kohl Sudduth, and Gloria ReubenÂ
Written partially by Tom Selleck himself, Lost in Paradise follows Jesseâs investigation into a cold case of a serial killer in Boston. Jesse of course in classically uncomplicated fashion solves the case with swagger and courage.Â
Beetlejuice (1989)
Starring Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder
A couple of recently deceased ghosts (played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) contract the services of a "bio-exorcist", Beetlejuice in order to remove the obnoxious new owners of their house whoâs daughter played by Winona Ryder enjoys the ghost attention and uses them to torment her parents. Another example of the classic Halloween film.
Good Witch Halloween (2015)
Starring Catherine Bell, James Denton and Bailee Madison
Cassie Nightingale and her family love Halloween and decorate Grey House ever year together as a family. Unfortunately this year, the entire family is too busy to make time for traditions. This movie has the charm of Cassie and the new Good Witch series, which no matter how predictable it seems the journey always surprises you.
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Starring Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, and Dianne Wiest
A young gentle man with scissors (Johnny Depp) for hands comes to live with a family after living in isolation. Itâs a beautiful story about someone who was different being accepted into modern society that is one of the best in Tim Burtonâs repertoire.Â
The Goonies (1985)
Starring Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, and Jeff Cohen
A group of misfits search for a buried pirate treasure to save their homes from foreclosure. This is one of my all time favorite movies as it is good at any ages returning its viewers to childlike wonder and makes us all want to go on a pirate adventure with our friends.Â
Hits (2014)
Starring Meredith Hagner, Matt Walsh, and James Adman
A young girl with dreams of stardom but no talent gives up everything to get what she wants. Unfortunately for her, her fatherâs ridiculous arguments with the town council go viral and inadvertently becomes a youtube star herself. From the twisted mind of David Cross, this movie shows exactly what is wrong with our generation with their internet obsession and unnatural desire to be famous.Â
Grease 2 (1982)
Starring Michelle Pfeiffer, and Maxwell Caulfield
The lesser quality Grease movie that could never hold a candle to the original. A cult classic featuring Michelle Pfeiffer early in her career and a truly fantastic talent show.
Bill and Tedâs Excellent Adventure (1989)
Starring Keanu Reeves, Alex Winter, and George Carlin
Bill and Ted take you along for the ride as they travel through history via time machine to finish their history project. Even though Bill and Ted are probably the stupidest teens in film history, I would love to time travel with them and learn about history. Anyone else?
Hocus Pocus (1993)
Starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy
The ultimate Halloween movie for 90â˛s kids as the Sanderson sisters are resurrected in Salem by two teens who must stop them once and for all featuring Thora Birch. Exciting news came in 2015 when a sequel was announced! So excited!
Casper (1995)
Starring Bill Pullman, Christina Ricci, Cathy Moriarty and Devon Sawa
A paranormal expert (Bill Pullman) and his daughter (Christina Ricci) move into a house that is haunted by 4 ghosts, 1 nice and 3 naughty ones. Kat must follow his dad around the country as he tries to unhaunt homes for realtors, which makes it hard to make friends until she meets Casper the friendly ghost. Â A delightful film that warms your heart and kinda makes you wish you had a ghost friend.
Days 280-291: October 7-18, 2015
Coyote Ugly (2002)
Starring Piper Perabo, Adam Garcia, and John Goodman
Violet moves away from her New Jersey hometown to become a songwriter in New York City. A delightfully simple film about big dreams, and the big city with a splash of sugary pop songs and leather pants. It is not the best version of its genre in the slightest but thoroughly enjoyable each time I watch it.Â
American Pie (1999)
Starring the ensemble of Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Tara Reid, Chris Klein, Seann William Scott, Thomas Ian Nicholas and Eddie Kaye Thomas
A movie that defined what it was like to grow up and graduate in 1999 and set up the careers of the ensemble of young actors it introduced, American Pie makes us laugh uproariously and hope that our guys succeed in completing their pact.Â
6 Years (2015)
Starring Taissa Farmiga, Ben Rosenfield, and Lindsay Burdge
6 years shows the inside story of a young couple who has been together for several years and is on track to have a perfect love until their dreams get in the way. While interesting in concept, this movieâs execution and script feel drawn out and at times painful to watch.
Sheâs The Man (2006)
Starring Amanda Bynes, Laura Ramsey, and Channing Tatum
Based on my favorite Shakespeare play, Twelfth Night, Sheâs the Man tells the story of a sister who want to prove her worth by impersonating her brother to tryout for the boys soccer team. This movie falls in the most successful period of Amanda Bynesâ career prior to her very public status as a totally whack job. It takes the hilarious parts of Shakespeare and a killer soundtrack with a twist of modern pop culture and turns them into a film that is entertaining each watch.
Harvest Moon (2015)
Starring Jessy Schram and Jesse Hutch
After Jennyâs (Jessy Schram) father goes bankrupt, she travels to the pumpkin farm her father bought for her and transform its struggling bottom line into a full fledge brand after bonding with the family that has owned the farm for generations. Itâs a rich girl learns the value of a dollar kind of movie with a predictable story, dialogue and ending typical of a hallmark movie. It is definitely not its best but not the worst either.
Invisible Sister (2015)
Starring Rowan Blanchard, and Paris Berelc
Rowan Blanchard (Riley from Girl Meets World) plays Cleo, a science nerd who must do a science fair project in order to pass which results in her turning her sister invisible and finally learning that we all feel invisible sometimes. Â This movie presents a great message for young people that should be seen.
Copenhagen (2014)
Starring Gethin Anthony, Frederikke Dahl Hansen, and Sebastian Armesto
The story of Williamâs trip to Copenhagen to deliver a letter to his grandfather which results in him developing a intense friendship with Effy, played by Frederikke Dahl Hansen, who's like a mini Jennifer Lawrence pushing William to deliver the letter. This movie was interesting but definitely disturbing take on friendship and European travel.
Beverly Lewisâs The Reckoning (2015)
Starring Katie Leclerc, Jacob Blair, and Chad Connell
A shunned young adopted Amish woman Katie moves into the home of her birth mother who left her money with which she starts a foundation. Her heart is broken when her parents canât come to her wedding due to Amish law. Itâs a tearjerker that keeps hoping Katie will do whats right by both of her families. Itâs full of drama and romance.
Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
Starring Jared Gilman, Kara Hayward, and Bruce Willis
A pair of young lovers, Sam and Suzy use their survival skills to run away together in this quirky Wes Anderson film filled with quips and laughs from start to finish.
Back to the Future (1985), Back to the Future Part 2 (1989)Â and Back to the FutureÂ
Starring Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Mary Steenburgen, Lea Thompson and Elizabeth Shue
In honor of Back to the Future day, I watched the entire trilogy over the course of the three days leading up to the day. Iâve seen parts one and two but had never seen the third part. Rematching the movies in sequence made me realize how groundbreaking and brilliant they are in concept, and story.
Days 274-279: October 1-6, 2015
Grease (1978)
Starring John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, and Stockard Channing
One of the greatest movie musicals of all time, Grease defined a generation while still remaining timeless and relatable 37 years later as a live television production goes into production. Itâs impossible to hate as it has you singing along to its catchy tunes and relate to its characters. If you havenât seen it, I recommend it.
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (1985)
Starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Lee Montgomery, Shannen Doherty and Helen Hunt
Janey (Sarah Jessica Parker) new in town becomes BFFâs with Lynne, who convinces her to audition to be part of Dance TVâs regular couple. Like in every 80â˛s movie, her father doesnât want her dancing which means that she needs to hide it. Itâs nostalgic and cheesy but I always watch it when its on tv.
Autumn Dreams (2015)
Starring Jill Wagner and Colin Egglesfield
Annie and Ben (Wagner and Egglesfield) fall in love in their late teens and marry  dispute her parents disapproval. Her father says the marriage must be annulled. 15 years later, they must reunite as they both want to marry again to divorce as their annulment was never filed. This movie is better in concept than some of the other movies recently especially Hector, Benâs driver who added much needed humor and sage wisdom to Annie and Ben.
Signed Sealed Delivered: The Impossible Dream (2015)
Starring Eric Mabius, Kristin Booth, and Crystal Lowe
The #Postables travel to Washington to support Rita in the National Miss Special Delivery competition and are united with a letter that is a key to bringing home a lost servicewoman whoâs daughter they helped in Truth Be Told. As a continuation of Truth Be Told, The Impossible Dream actualizes the dreams of hundreds of families to be reunited with their lost loved ones lost in the line of action protecting our country. I believe it is their best film yet as it advances the relationships of both #Sholiver and #Norita, provides excellent commentary as well as the development of the #postables and their future.
Fan Girl (2015)
Starring Kiernan Shipka, Kara Hayward, and Meg Ryan
A 15 year old girl spends every waking moment on social media posting videos about/to her favorite band, All Time Low, which become the inspiration for her final film project. This film is a typical teen comedy where its best features are its supporting characters in this case, Darvan played by Joshua Boone, who makes the movie for me. Shoutout to my second cousin in All Time Low!
The Wedding Singer (1998)
Starring Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore, and Christine Taylor
Adam Sandler plays Robbie Hart, a wedding singer who falls for Julia (Drew Barrymore) and she falls right back despite the fact that they are engaged to other people. Itâs 80â˛s nostalgia in the late 90â˛s at its finest. For some weird reason, this movie works and stands as the best of the matchups between Sandler and Barrymore with lots of subtle jokes and heartwarming moments including an appearance by Billy Idol and the late Ellen Albertini Dow as Rosie.
September 2015: Movies for A Year Challenge Recap
SEPTEMBER 2015 was the ninth month of my movie a day challenge.
So here it is in no particular order:
BEST: Ex Machina (2015), Woman in Gold (2015), The Intern (2015), The Skeleton Twins (2014), Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015)Â
WORST: The Decoy Bride (2011), Lead with Your Heart (2015), Comet (2014), Jersey Girl (2004)
Hallmarkâs Best: Signed Sealed Delivered: Truth Be Told (2015)
See you at the end of October!
Days 271-273: September 28-30, 2015
Comet (2014)
Starring Justin Long and Emmy Rossum
Comet tells the story of Dell and Kimberly over the course of their six year relationship from back and forth and beginning to end. This movie means well in its structure and storytelling but ultimately is tedious and painful to watch among its few beautiful moments.
Up in the Air (2009)
Starring George Clooney, Vera Farmiga, and Anna Kendrick
Ryan Bingham, an efficiency expert who travels the country firing people thinks he loves life on the road but changes his perspective when Natalie comes on as a trainee and Alex opens his heart. Itâs a snapshot of our world in the final year of the first decade of the new millennium as a man must examine what he holds so dear. Featuring outstanding performances by George Clooney, Vera Farming and Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air is a retrospective journey for anyone who watches it.
Philomena (2013)
Starring Judi Dench, Steve Coogan, and Sophie Kennedy ClarkÂ
A world-weary political journalist Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan) helps Philomena (Dench) search for her son who was taken away from her after she was banished to a convent. Based on a true story, Philomelaâs journey is full of disappointments as well as laughs and triumphs beautifully portrayed by Judi Dench.Â
Day 270: September 27, 2015
Sunday was a four movie day catching up on an eclectic group of films that complement each other very well.Â
Black Mass (2015)
Starring Johnny Depp, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Dakota Johnson
Black Mass chronicles the life and search for Whitey Bulger, infamous Southie crime lord and FBI informant. It needs a body count like Liam Neeson movies. Johnny Depp is the perfect choice for this role as he pushes the creepy factor up to 10 and made me feel like I needed watch something completely lighter as the movie and its realistic depiction of violence stays with you. If you like Johnny Depp or real life crime stories and donât faint at the sight of blood, this movie is for you.
Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015)
Starring Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, and Selena Gomez
Dracula (Adam Sandler) and his monster friends must scare the vampire out of his grandson Dennis, who is half human keep Mavis (Selena Gomez) and her human husband, Jonathan (Andy Samberg) from leaving the hotel with his grandson. Featuring a fantastic ensemble cast of superstar actors, Hotel Transylvania 2 is not the best animated film of the year but returns on the promises of its predecessor with its hilarious jokes for kids and adults.
The Intern (2015)
Starring Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway, and Rene Russo
Ben Whittaker (Robert De Niro) become bored of retirement and becomes a senior intern for an online fashion site called About the Fit, run by founder Jules Ostin (Anne Hathaway) who may be in over her head. The best part about this movie is that it proves that no one is an island and you can always be improved by the help and objective guidance of others. Ben reminds me of my own father who is near his own retirement. I do wish that there was slightly more of Benâs boys office crew as they provided great comic relief in a movie about life crisis.
Hello, Itâs Me (2015)
Starring Kellie Martin and Kavan Smith
Two years after her husband Andreâs death, Annie (Martin) and her two children are still picking up the pieces of their lives. Annie is not ready to love again when circumstances place her at his party with no desserts because of him. The two get along really well but Annie doesnât let him in until she received messages from the grave as her husband tells her to move on and be happy. I followed this entire movie but I felt the placement and excess of the eerie messages were extremely off-putting.Â
Days 264-269:September 22-26, 2015
Jersey Girl (2004)
Starring Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, George Carlin and Raquel Castro
Oliver(Ben Affleck) is a top notch NYC publicist works through the death of his wife Gertrude (Jennifer Lopez) while giving birth due their daughter, Gertie (Raquel Castro). Unfortunately for Oliver, he canât handle being a single parent and a top notch publicist which results in moving back to New Jersey with his daughter to live with his father (George Carlin). This movie is definitely Kevin Smithâs worst film and not just because Jay and Silent Bob arenât in it. The âlove storyâ is not realized and there is little in terms of character development. Itâs best features are Raquel Castro (finalist on The Voice in Season 1) and the great always classic George Carlin. The only reason I even watch this one is that Netflix auto started it.
Drinking Buddies (2013)
Starring Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick and Ron Livingston
Luke (Jake Johnson) and Kate (Olivia Wilde) are coworkers at an up and coming brewery. It comes with the territory that Kate and Luke go out drinking with the rest of the brewery every night landing themselves in hot water as they flirt despite having significant others. A weekend at the Lake House brings all of the emotions to a headOne weekend away together with their significant others proves who really belongs together and who doesn't. This movie represents a new genre in independent film called Mumblecore, which places its characters in more realistic situations and dialogue. It is refreshing to come across a film more true to life and I welcome future Mumblecore films to inspire.
From Prada to Nada (2011)
Starring Camilla Belle, Alexa PenaVega, Wilder Valderrama and Nicholas D'Agosto
A loose adaptation of Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility," where two sisters, Mary (PenaVega) and Nora (Belle) used to luxury are forced into poverty when their father dies and they move into East Los Angeles with their aunt. This movie was not the best Iâve seen recently but with a backing from Jane Austen, it churns out several enjoyable moments pieced together as solid predictable romantic comedy.
The Skeleton Twins (2014)
Starring Kristin Wiig, Bill Hader, Ty Burrell and Luke Wilson
Linked by twinship, two estranged siblings (Kristin Wiig and Bill Hader) both try to kill themselves on the same day only to be saved by each other and mending their strained relationship. Milo and Maggie reunite in their hometown where each of them not only face each other but their denial of their problems head on. A beautiful film highlighting the dramatic and comedic talents of Wiig and Hader including a fantastic #lipsyncalong to Starshipâs âNothingâs Gonna Stop Us Nowâ.
Love on the Air (2015)
Starring Alison Sweeney, Jonathan Scarfe, and John Kapelo
A womanâs advice radio host, Sonia (Sweeney) must partner with Nick, a man whore and chauvinist radio host so both of them can succeed. A predictable plotline has the two falling for each other and making themselves better. More entertaining than many of Hallmarkâs recent efforts but still below the bar of great for Hallmark.Â
