[ vortship ] >> WHAT THE HAL
Hal followed close behind the girl with a clipboard. She was still truthfully on the fence when it came to if Momo actually liked her or not. As for Hal, she liked her just fine, with the same nonspecific like she took to most everyone she met. She didn’t know why Mojo hadn’t told her about having a daughter until… well, a few days ago, actually. Then again, HIM had other kids they never told Hal about too, maybe it was just all about getting her friends to open up more!
Or all that was stupid and Hal just needed to go with it. Probably the latter, actually.
She appeared to be taking notes as Momo was speaking, messy, illegible notes in a combination of English and Vortian around a pathetic drawing of a smiling windmill. As long as it made sense to her, it didn’t really matter what her notes looked like.
“Teeth… laser… windmill…” she wrote as she spoke, sure to dot all her I’s with hearts. “Oh man dude, this is gonna be the evilest minigolf course ever! So evil you’ll- probably lose money… actually. You know how testy people can be on Yelp.”
“Yelp doesn’t scare me,” she scoffed. The site’s security was far more lax than the security on HIM’s bank accounts, and she could hack that without so much as batting an eye. Actually, unbeknownst to them, the demon was the one financing this little adventure, and turning this outdated mini-golf course into a thriving enterprise was going to be quite the expenditure. She only wished she could be there when they got their credit card bill.
But long story short: if she could commit massive credit card fraud unhindered, she could fix a few Yelp reviews.
“Besides, people here like evil. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t still be living here,” she pointed out as they reached the next hole of their tour. “They can deny it all they want, but there’s nothing stopping any of them from going to live somewhere safe and happy, but that would be boring. People don’t want to admit it, but they like the excitement of living so close to the kind of evil so prevalent in Townsville. It makes them feel good about themselves in comparison, like they might not be perfect, or even good, but they’re a lot better than the scum running around here. Well, I may have accidentally thrown the recyclables in with the rest of the trash, but at least I haven’t dissolved a building with a laser today!”
Momo let out an amused sigh as she dropped a purple golf ball onto the green, putting it back and forth a few times with her club. “You can understand that, right? I mean, that’s a part of why you’re still here, isn’t it? Why you hang out with HIM. . .and my father?” Her tone was light, non-threatening despite the confrontational-nature of the questions. She’d gleaned some details from her father about how Hal had ended up on earth, but by no means had a clear picture.
As if to punctuate her statement, she lined up her putt and took her shot. “But anyway, I suppose you could call my vision for this place something of an extension of that idea,” she continued, watching the ball ricochet up the course. “Difficult and over the top. A slice of evil and excitement, but not in a life-threatening way. For us, a chance to get a little creative. The more high tech, the better, I’d say.” She glanced over her shoulder at Hal’s notes. “If you a have any ideas of your own, I’m all ears. I’m even inclined to give you free reign on a couple holes, if you want.”

❝ I was on board until you said social media. I mean… He’s not exactly an open book on facebook or instagram. He usually posts science memes and pictures of us. Which means for the algorithm to work we’d actually have to look through his diari- I mean science journals by hand. I don’t know about you Momo, but I’m so not going to pry into the Professor’s stuff. It’s too cringy. He has a mug that say science is sexy. A MUG, MOMO. ❞
“Admittedly his sense of humor sometimes borders on cringe-worthy, but it’s also kind of cute in its own way. I mean, anyone we set him up with is going to have to like Chemistry Cat and ridiculous novelty mugs, or at least be willing to tolerate all of that in the face of everything else that’s so wonderful about him. So we would have to incorporate it into the algorithm. And if we’re really going to get this right, we have to commit to doing whatever we have to in the name of love. It’s not really prying when he leaves his, ahem, science journals in an unlocked drawer in his lab for anyone to come across.”

’ Call it what you will… fate… destiny… ’ ’ You smell that? Take a deep breath through the nose. ’ ’ Really let that seep in. ’ ’ What are you getting? ’ ’ Your thoughts? ’ ’ I don’t know why, but overall it just smells like the color brown. ’ ’ I could get used to a view like this. ’ ’ Yep, I’m used to it. Guys I want a castle. ’ ’ Great. Now I’m the bad guy. ’ ’ Look in that mirror. ’ ’ I see a strong, confident, beautiful young lady. ’ ’ Oh look, you’re here too. ’ ’ Skip the drama, stay with Mama! ’ ’ This is the story of how I died. ’ ’ Don’t worry, this is actually a very fun story and the truth is, it isn’t even mine. ’ ’ Oh… oh no… where is my satchel? ’ ’ I’ve hidden it. Somewhere you’ll never find it. ’ ’ It’s in that pot, isn’t it? ’ ’ I’m just teasing! ’ ’ How you manage to do that every single day without fail! ’ ’ It looks absolutely exhausting, darling! ’ ’ Then I don’t know why it takes so long. ’ ’ Oh, it’s nothing. ’ ’ Who are you, and how did you find me? ’ ’ I know not who you are, nor how I came to find you. ’ ’ May I just say… Hi. How ya doin’? ’ ’ You were my new dream. ’ ’ You should know that this is the strangest thing I’ve ever done! ’ ’ Let’s just assume for the moment that everyone in here doesn’t like me! ’ ’ How ‘bout best two out of three? ’ ’ Who’s that? ’ ’ They don’t like me. ’ ’ Too weak to handle myself out there, huh, ______? ’ ’ Go. Live your dream. ’ ’ Your dream stinks. I was talking to her. ’ ’ I was saying tomorrow is a really big day, and you didn’t really respond. ’ ’ I distinctly remember, your birthday was last year. ’ ’ No no no, can’t be. ’ ’ That’s the funny thing about birthdays, they’re kind of an annual thing. ’ ’ You know how I feel about the mumbling. ’ ’ Blah blah blah blah blah, it’s very annoying! ’ ’ I’m just teasing, you’re adorable. ’ ’ I love you so much, darling. ’ ’ Let me just get this straight. ’ ’ I take you to see the lanterns, bring you back home, and you’ll give me back my satchel? ’ ’ When I promise something, I never ever break that promise. ’ ’ I didn’t want to have to do this, but you leave me no choice. ’ ’ This is kind of an off-day for me. This doesn’t normally happen. ’ ’ Fine! I’ll take you to see the lanterns. ’ ’ You broke my smolder. ’ ’ Here comes the smolder. ’ ’ This is bad, this is very very bad, this is really bad… ’ ’ They just can’t get my nose right! ’ ’ Who cares? ’ ’ Well, it’s easy for you to say… ’ ’ The party lasted an entire week, and honestly, I don’t remember most of it. ’ ’ I’ve been dreaming about them my entire life! ’ ’ Haven’t any of you ever had a dream? ’ ’ What’s your dream? ’ ’ Sorry, boys. I don’t sing. ’ ’ Well, I hope you’re here to apologize. ’ ’ I have something for you too. ’ ’ I should have given it to you before, but I was scared. ’ ’ And the thing is, I’m not scared anymore. ’ ’ You know what I mean? ’ ’ All right, okay, give me a boost, and I’ll pull you up. ’ ’ I just… I can’t believe that after all we’ve been through together, you don’t… trust me? ’ ’ Sorry… my hands are full. ’ ’ I’ve been looking out of a window for eighteen years. ’ ’ And what if it is? What do I do then? ’ ’ What if it’s not everything I dreamed it would be? ’ ’ Well, that’s the good part I guess. ’ ’ You get to go find a new dream. ’ ’ That’s a lot of hair. ’ ’ Oh, now they’re just being mean. ’ ’ I can’t believe I did this! ’ ’ I mean, what she doesn’t know won’t kill her, right? ’ ’ I have made the decision to trust you. ’ ’ So, what do you want with my hair? To cut it? ’ ’ Listen, the only thing I want to do with your hair is to get out of it… ’ ’ I have a big surprise! ’ ’ Did I ever tell you I’ve got a thing for brunettes? ’ ’ Is it ruffians? Thugs? Have they come for me? ’ ’ Stay calm. It can probably smell fear. ’ ’ You should see your faces because you look - ’ ’ I didn’t see that coming. ’ ’ But I know what the big question is? ’ ’ So! Hey can I ask you something? ’ ’ Because I’m not gonna lie, that would be stupendous… ’ ’ Is there any chance that I’m going to get super strength in my hand? ’ ’ Oh. Sorry yes, just… lost in thought I guess. ’ ’ Whoaaaa! Somebody get me a glass! ’ ’ Frying pans… who knew, right? ’ ’ Sorry! Just, don’t… don’t freak out. ’ ’ Is that blood in your mustache? ’ ’ Look at all the blood in his mustache! ’ ’ I can’t help but notice you seem a little at war with yourself here. ’ ’ Now, I’m only picking up bits and pieces here, of course. ’ ’ A little rebellion, a little adventure, that’s good. Healthy, even. ’ ’ I mean, this is serious stuff. ’ ’ But let me ease your conscience. This is part of growing up. ’ ’ You’re way over thinking this, trust me. ’ ’ I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m letting you out of the deal. ’ ’ What is it going to take for me to get my satchel back? ’ ’ You can’t tell anyone about this, okay? ’ ’ Well, I’ve gotta say, I didn’t know you had that in you back there. ’ ’ Now, I know I’m not supposed to mention the hair. ’ ’ Frankly, I’m too scared to ask about the frog. ’ ’ If you want to see the lanterns so badly, why haven’t you gone before? ’ ’ Why would you ask such a ridiculous question? ’ ’ I’ve spent my entire life hiding from people who would use me for my power… ’ ’ That criminal is to be hanged for his crimes. ’ ’ Hmm. I have magic hair that glows when I sing. ’

“You cleaned the house by yourself?! This is the best Mother’s Day ever.”
“Now, make sure you’re nice to grandma today. It’s Mother’s Day for her, too, you know.”
“How did you know this is just what I wanted?”
“I’ll be honest, you’re terrible at keeping secrets. I sort of knew about this already.”
“Can’t my Mother’s Day gift be taking care of my child/children?”
“At least let me help you cook.”

❝ I wouldn’t say horribly, but yeah… Dear old Professor doesn’t have the BEST track record when it comes to relationships. I don’t know where to start! Most of the people I know out of Townsville are either super heroes or villains and it’s purely professional. ❞
“Who says we have to do all the leg work on this? That’s something an algorithm can easily do--not one of those stupid dating site ones, but something catered specifically to Granddad. It’ll comb through all the census and social media data in the surrounding cities and bring back viable options. Then we just go meet whoever we think fits the bill to narrow down our options. And then we set up a meeting. . .probably in a way that seems like an accident or he’ll think we’re meddling and won’t give it a real shot. Simple.”
“Mothers are the worst. Who needs them?”
@vortship
Momo swung her club idly back and forth as she and Hal made their way through the maze of flashing lights and moving parts to the next hole. She found it hard to believe that this girl, this weird girl, this alien, had more of her father’s affection--in his odd, unattached way--than she had been able to garner since being stuck in this time. She understood his initial uneasiness--who wouldn’t be freaked out by their grown-up daughter suddenly showing up--but he should be past it by now. Should be curious about her, about getting to know her. . .with an illogical, paternal disregard for whatever it might affect in the future. But instead he kept her at a distance, and she had to watch as it was Hal he spent hours pouring over tech with in the lab instead of her.
She needed to do something about it--there was only so much longer she could put up with this before the little green monster slipped past the facade--but what?
“I think the windmill over there could use a few adjustments,” she mused aloud. “It’s too easy. It needs more unpredictability. Not to mention it’s such a cliche. What do you think? Maybe speed it up, at the very least? Give it teeth of some kind? Oh! Or a laser that zaps the ball if you don’t hit it fast enough? That would be more exciting.”

❝ The professor can’t handle a long-distance relationship. He forgets to shave when he’s in one of his ‘zones’. It has to be someone in town. Just not Sedusa. Or Femme. Or Mask Scara … Okay. I see your point. ❞
“And that’s just the villains. The townies aren’t any better for him! Didn’t he have a fling with Ms. Keane at one point that ended horribly?”
I’ve been going back and forth on this for a while, but I’ve come to the conclusion that Momo does in fact have a relationship with her grandfather.
At first, Mojo was adamant that Professor Utonium was not going to meet his granddaughter EVER. The girls, of course, didn’t like this idea and tried to convince him otherwise because the professor very much did want to meet Momo. In the end, they agreed to let the matter rest because Mojo was her father and they had to respect his wishes.
It happened in an unexpected way, though everyone should have seen that it was inevitable. Mojo was in jail, so the girls were looking after Momo. And wouldn’t you know it, the hotline rang. They couldn’t just leave the girl by herself, since it seemed like this particular battle was going to be a long one. So they made the decision to hand her off to the Professor.
Mojo was LIVID over it when he found out, but Momo showed genuine interest in seeing her grandfather again, and since he couldn’t bring himself to tell her no, he reluctantly allowed it.
Momo has obviously learned not to mention her visits with her grandfather to her father since it’s such a point of contention, but she wants to find a way to mend the bond (or lack thereof) between the two of them.
[ open ] >> TO ALL
Momo grimaced as she gingerly pulled the blood soaked fabric off her shoulder to reveal the injury. A normal person would need a doctor in a situation like this, but she wasn’t normal by any stretch of the imagination. Soon, it would be as if nothing had happened, but for now, it hurt like hell. “It’s fine. It’ll be fine,” she assured her companion as she used her free hand to wet a cloth under the sink. “I just didn’t expect them to go for the guns so fast.”
❝ Clearly, it’s up to us to find the best person for The Professor to date. ❞

“And I can tell you right now, we’re going to have to expand our search past the city limits because we’re never going to find someone right for Granddad in Townsville.”
