There's this old, tiny debate in The Boys fandom about what is appropriate to use as Ryan's last name. Canonically, there is no confirmed last name for him. In the credits he is just Ryan. I elected to just use Ryan Butcher early on for a few reasons. First of all, for tagging. It's just easier. Granted, I could have copied the AO3 tag for the character. Which brings me to reason two: Becca. Becca, it seems, did not take up her maiden name again after leaving Billy. She is the character in my mind when I label Ryan as Ryan Butcher, not Billy. She is his mother, so his last name is her last name.
In addition, if Ryan uses the surname Butcher there's this funny sort of Rey Skywalker née Palpatine subversion happening between Billy and Homelander. That is amusing to me. It can also just make Butchlander progress smoother. Homelander can't be the only left out of the Butcher family on paper, so he and Billy should just get married. That is very, very entertaining to me.
If Ryan uses Milk as his surname now though, I imagine that would've pleased Homelander. My Milklander agenda says that if Homelander could choose a last name, his choice would be Milk once he realized that was an option on the table. John Homelander Milk. Yummers.
